The name is not Merdisha Coddington, it is Mary Madisha Coddington, born about 1880. Her parents were Melville and Martha (Lancaster) Coddington from Garrett County, Md.
Thanks, Linda G.

Thanks so much, that is my gr.gr.grandfather, Melville. Do you by chance have the names of all his children? I know that his daughter Mary was my great grandmother, but I can't find her in any census with the family.
I appreciate the help, Linda G.

John Insley Coddington's grandfather was Jefferson Coddington (1832-1876). Few things in genealogy are more certain than that. Jefferson was the son of Jonathan Inslee Coddington, and he had a younger brother, also named Jefferson, who died at one month of age. To date these are the only known Coddingtons ever named Jefferson. Jefferson married Julia Fellows, from whom he was shortly estranged, but they had one daughter, Emily Matilda. He married again, and had a son, Andrew Comstock Coddington (1855-1905), John Insley's father.
However, the Ellis Island database (ellisisland.org) records the arrival of Jefferson Coddington twice, 5 Oct 1909, and 6 Sep 1912, the latter time travelling with Emily Coddington, and both times travelling first class. His age is given as 62 in the first record, 63 in the later, and his birth date as 30 Jan 1859, residence 24 W. 58th St. New York City. Emily was 24 at the time, which accords with Emily Matilda's birthdate. The same Emily made other trips with a Julia Coddington, no doubt Julia (Fellows) Coddington.
The known Jefferson Coddington also lived in New York City, but by 1909 he was in a vault in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York City.
It seems highly unlikely that John Insley Coddington would have been unaware of or missed a second, prominent Jefferson Coddington, 4 years younger than his father, travelling back and forth to Europe at the same time, living in the same city, prominent and wealthy, who apparently had a daughter with the same name as his half aunt.
What is going on?

General Notes: "Martha Ellen Coddington's first husband was Thaddeus Greene. He was an artilleryman in the Union Army and saw active service during the four years of its duration without even a significant scratch or wound.
Three years after the war's end, participating in a patriotic fourth of July celebration at Abington, Indiana, a cannon the used to fire blank cartridges of powder exploded and mangled Greene's hands so badly both were amputated at the wrist. At that time he and Martha were engaged to be married. On his return from the hospital, he went to her to break the engagement, telling her because of the accident he would not hold her to her promise. She refused, saying "I have given you my pledge, and I will abide by it." So they were married and withing a few years a little daughter, Leona, came to live with them. Greene had artificial hands fitted to his wrists. These had small holes in their palms. he had special articles to eat with, knife, fork, and sppon with tangs on the ends, these he'd fit in his palms and thus feed himself. However, he needed assistance in dressing.
For many years, he was a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity selling their literature and books. He was appointed postmaster at Centerville, Indiana, and held that position for severl years or until his death in 1879. After Green's [sic] death his widow was appointed postmistress at the office and held it until the administration changed in 1884. She subsequently married Dr. Amos Fisher, a practicing physician in Indianapolis, Indiana, and resided there until her death." 7

Date of birth for Col. Coddington is unknown, must have been pretty old. He had a long white beard, was sitting on a common chair, one leg crossed over the other posing between 2 younger men standing each side of him. His threads looked more gray than faded blue next to the men beside him who were in dark suits. Some possible cousins/relatives of the Coddington's of Minnesota claim there's a humorous story about this picture, another account said he fought for the Confederacy from Missouri and is part of a branch from Texas.
