William Coddington was living in Ohio in the 1850 census. (He is listed as William Cottington in the 1850 Census.) He was married to a Margaret. William stated that he was born in New Jersey on that Census. Anyone with information on this William Coddington or his wife, please email me.

Not sure how much you want to know about John Wesley Coddington and Caroline Driggs. He was a "hard-drinking man," and they separated. Their daughter Sarah Ann married George Cox on 1 Jul 1848. Sarah Ann's line back to the immigrant is fairly well researched.
John Wesley's son, John Wesley Jr., moved to Wisconsin and enlisted in the 37th Regiment. He was wounded at the battle of Petersburg, where the Union forces used Pennsylvania miners to tunnel under the confederate fort and, filling the tunnel with powder, blew a gigantic hole from the bottom in the fort. The Union soldiers were so surprised by their success that they delayed charging, and when they did go, they simply tumbled into the bomb crater, where they were mostly slaughtered. It is one of the weirder events of the civil war.
It is the son (brother-in-law of George Cox), not the father--or uncle, that you have found in Iowa--JW Jr. was there after the war, but his mother, Caroline Driggs, came with him after she left his father, JW Sr.. If you'd like info on any of this line, please email me separately.

John Wesley Coddington b Mar 26, 1846 NYC
Father John Coddington Mother Caroline Smith Driggs
Sister Sarah Ann Coddington was my gr-gr-grandmother.
My great grandfather, George Wilbur Cox, did not talk about his family much. Told my mother he was orphaned. Still searching for dates of death of his parents...George Wilbur Cox found several times in records living near his uncle John Wesley Coddington here in Iowa. Have newspaper article about John Wesley's death. Did not know he had been married 1st and had children by Caroline ?? - Also thank you for birth years of 2nd family-I had names but no dates.
I've "rescued" a Wedding book which includes an original wedding invitation
and marriage certificate for Hattie C. BOWERS daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.F.
BOWERS and Charles C. CODINGTON. The couple was married 23 June 1892 at the
home of the brides parents in Annandale, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
Witnesses were Lewis B. CODINGTON and Lillian J. BOWERS, and the ceremony
was officiated by A. MCWILLIAMS.
I find record of a Charles C. CODDINGTON b. 30 April 1855 in Tewkesbury,
Hunterdon County, NJ and am wondering if this might be the groom. If this
is the groom he would have been in his late 30's at the time. I was also
provided with census information for 1880 on the BOWERS family of Clinton,
Hunterdon Co., NJ including:
Jacob F. BOWERS (b. Nassau) and his wife Josephine BOWERS (b. France) along
with three children, Mary E.; Harriet C. age 10; and Lilian J. age 8 (all b.
NJ).
And census information on the CODDINGTON family of North Plainfield,
Somerset Co., NJ including:
Lewis B. CODDINGTON age 21(b. NJ, parents both b. NJ) and his wife Mary M.
CODDINGTON along with a child Jennie B.
I'm assuming the Lewis is likely a brother to Charles C. CODINGTON the
groom. I'm hoping that someone can identify the couple so that this
beautiful old heirloom can be returned to the family. If you are a member
of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

Magnificent, Jonathan! A million thanks for your informative and lengthy reply! It would appear to offer the answer to at least my present predicament, as there in the middle is the file heading for my stonewall, John Coddington, 1767. I shall be contacting the NEHGS to try to obtain the services of one of their researchers to copy the file for me.
I am most grateful for you taking so much of your time to assist so greatly an absolute stranger! Bob.

As Bob notes, the Lincolnshire Coddingtons have nothing (yet) to do with the American Coddingtons, nearly all of whom descend from Stockdale Coddington, who was from Blechingley, Surrey. Stockdale's line (his father was James) moved to Blechingley in about 1567, as the parish registers in Blechingley date from 1538, yet do not mention James until 1567/8, when his daughter Elizabeth was baptized.
If I remember right, there are about 4 clots of Coddingtons in England, none of whom connect. John Insley corresponded with a very enthusiastic Coddington woman in England who said (in her letters) that she had the connections figured out, but she never explained what they were, and although I did try to find her on the web, I haven't tried to write her old address to re-establish contact. She was about 15 when she wrote John, and I presume she lives elsewhere--and may have changed her surname.
The Benjamin and William booklet is by Herbert Guibord Coddington, perhaps the first Coddington to interest himself in the family, and it concerns only American Coddingtons.
The second, and by far the most professional, was John Insley Coddington, whose archives are at the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. A fair chunk of cousin John's work did concern english branches, see below. These are the file folder headings for that part that concern English Coddingtons. Except for the fact that NEHGS decided to renumber the locator codes for the Coddingtons after I transcribed them for my own use (in general fusing folders rather than splitting them), the IB Codes below should help you request the right folder. They provide an excellent research service which will xerox the contents. The more you can tell them about whom you are looking for, the better.
Don't know if that will help Bob, however.
Merlyn was the third Coddington that really worked at it, at least for the American branch. His database, which I think is still posted, is particularly good for 20th century descendants.
My own database, which I never posted because Merlyn was retired, had the time, and greatly enjoyed corresponding with all our relatives, includes many more sources than Merlyn's. and perhaps has more early Coddingtons. I have 3439 Coddingtons from the Stockdale tree, and Merlyn had (I think) 2915. Merlyn's database, for example, also includes Bob's branch. My database started from Merlyn's. I have spent the last few years trying to figure out where Merlyn got his info. A lot was from H.G. Coddington's three publications. Without knowing the source of info, it is difficult to judge which of several conflicting items is correct.
For example, if you check Merlyn's entry for Stockdale, on Rootsweb, you'll find a long note about Henry the VIII appropriating Coddington lands, which story Merlyn got from a letter of John Insley's that I copied at NEHGS, and sent to Merlyn. But that was an early letter of John Insley C., and if you read all his correspondence, you find out that he never did connect Stockdale to the Coddingtons who exchanged lands with Henry VIII, and so we cannot yet presume that the story has anything to do with us.
We'll all miss Merlyn, a great guy. Don't know what to do about updating Coddington records on Rootsweb. I suppose it will just stay there, frozen in time.

Many thanks for your reply, Maureen. I should think that the book would contain the American Coddingtons, wouldn't it? My branches came directly from England to New Zealand, and I'm fairly well organised back to this John fella. If the book is about the English families, it could be of help. I'm afraid that my good friend Merlyn died about two months ago. He was my idea of a real gentleman, and was lavish in his help to anyone who needed it. He will be sorely missed. Thank you for your help, and I shall try to establish the contents of the book before I order it. The family bred like flies once they hit America, but they will be of no help to me.
If you think that I may be able to help you, please ask. Bob

I can tell you that a Herbert Coddington had a book published by Higginson Book Co in July of 1997. The name of it is "Descendants of William & Benjamin Coddington. You can order it online through Barnes and Noble's website or you can contact Jonathan Coddington at coddingt(a)ix.netcom.com. I got a lot of information from him and found out that he is my nineth cousin. He has a database on the family which includes 10,500 people, of whom about 3,500 were born Coddingtons.
If you get any more information on him I would be glad it you would pass it on to me at dmpkfam(a)tds.net. I have also hit a stonewall because I have been told that there is Native American blood in the family also and I also look Native American myself. You may also want to contact Merlyn Coddington. You can get that email from the other queries that are on this site.
Good luck in your search. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely
Maureen Reeve

Gidday, all you tribal millions out there. I hope that one of you may have the jack-hammer to knock down the stone wall which has defied all my attempts to get past. Does anyone know WHERE John Coddington was born in 1767. He married his wife Elizabeth Wright in Nocton, Lincolnshire, where he then lived. I don't think he was born there. He had children William, b 23 Oct 1791, William b 4 Feb 1793 (First must have died very early, and it was common to then name the second child of the same gender after the earlier.) John b 7 Dec 1794, Richard b 23 Feb 1797, and Elizabeth b 25 Feb 1798. All were born in Nocton. Any help will be very gratefully received, and any help I can give the clan is yours for the asking. Many thanks. Bob.
