A couple of years ago I was in touch with a Merlyn L. coddington. We had a relative in common, one Abram W. Coddington born about 8 nov. 1768. His son, Abram Winnick Coddington was born 5 Jul. 1837 and served briefly in the Civil War. This man married a Katherine Murphy and they had 5 children, 3 girls who died in early childhood and are buried in Rockford, Ill. They had two boys. One was my grandfather, Joseph Henry Coddington, and my great uncle Clarence Bertrand, who died without issue. The family came west in the late 1800's. I would very much appreciatge being touch with you, or someone who can help me fill in gaps, and perhaps I can fill in some for you. We also go back to James at Bletchingly Surrey in 1530

I am working on a hypothesis that my John Mathew Coddington is a son of John Coddington (John is son of Enoch & Elizabeth) & Susan Kellar.
The information I have on my John is: b. 13 Jan 1866 (the year could be a little off) in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Then the first time I can document his appearance and know it's him is 1897 working as a "bridge builder" in Cincinnati. He remains in the Cincinnati and Covington, KY area, occupation typically listed as bridge carpenter, for the remainder of his life.
There aren't too many Coddingtons in Luzerne Co. in the late-1800s. In the 1870 census in Plains Twp., Luzerne Co., PA, there is a son John M. age 5 in the family of John and Susan Coddington. The same family has a son John age 15 in the 1880 census in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co., PA. And I have John M. Coddington in the Wilkes-barre directories as a laborer in 1889 and as a carpenter in 1890, 1891, and 1892.
I'd love to prove or disprove that my John Mathew is the same as the John M., the son of John and Susan. Does anyone have any clues to help me with my mystery?
