Merlyn,
Could you send me anything that you may have on the Codding line. I do have letters that were sent to and from Codding decendants that give a little different version of why the name changed. I would share this with you but not on this site at this time as one of the people in the letter is still alive and I would not want to invade her privecy. This was shared with me and sent to me by one of her daughters who found the letters in a file as she was unpacking her mothers things after moving to another location. You may reach me at:

Hi Merlyn,
My maiden name is Codding. I think I recall hearing this story or having it in my family tree but I have since recieved copies of a letter which gives another reason that it was changed. I don't wish to reveal this information yet but if I see it printed again on this board somewhere then I will verify . This is a private letter to another Codding and I don't have their permission to disclose this information as this person is still liveing but has been ill. Thank you for your information I will look and see if its the same thing that I have. Thank You,
Linda

Spencer Fisher Codding (1826-) married Sarah Marie Newton (1828) in Medina, OH, Nov 2, 1949. They had a son, Henry Humbolt (1859-). Henry did not want to follow his father in the General Store business so he became a railroad engineer in Wisconsin where he met hiw wife and then moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa. He believed that the Coddings were once Coddingtons so he legally changed his name Dec 1902 in Green Bay, WI, to Henry Humbolt Coddington. His three children were Coddingtons.

Linda, the vast majority of the Coddingtons in the US descend from James Coddington (1530-) in Bletchingley, Surrey, England. There are no living male Coddington descendants of William Coddington (1601-), who came from Boston, Lincolnshire, England (it is believed that his father was Robert Coddington who died in 1615 at Marston, Lincolnshire, England). William went on to become the first Governor of Rhode Island. According to John Insley Coddington all of William's male descendants died off before 1900. The Coddington to Codding, Cuddington, Corrington, or other deviations is another story. I have a case in hand where a Codding named his children Coddington. I have another where a Coddington named his children Codington and another where he named his children Corrington. The Coddington, Cuddington, Corrington, connection is much more common than the Codding connection. I would also like to see more explanations for the deviations.

Seeking info on parents of Henry Coddington, b. Oct 12, 1790, probably in Walker Valley, Ulster County, NY. Married Elizabeth Evans (1799-1879) in 1819. At least 9 children. Merlyn Coddington.
Alice Coddington (1869-), married to Andrew Martin Johnson, was a dau of Mary Ida (Summers) and Dubois Coddington (1830-1902). She was one of seven children. Who is Belle?
Do you happen to know Belle's parents names? I have an Andrew Martin Johnson who married Alice Coddington around 1890. My g-grandmother Alice was a daughter, who, I believe, had at least two sisters. Does any of this sound familiar to you?
