Dear Dorothy,
I don't know if you will pick this message up or not?
I have been tracing my family ancestry and my Grandpa is called Edmund Waring. He is 82 years old now. He still lives in Darwen, Lancashire.
His Grandfather was Emmanuel Cockshoot and his Grandmother was Margaret Ann Jepson. They used to live at No.6 Brunswick Street and then later moved to Punstock Road. My Grandpa is named after one of their later sons who was called Edmund who was born c1900. My Grandpa's mother was Betsy Cockshoot who was born c1888. Betsy married a man called George Waring from Darwen. Emmanuel and Margaret are my Great-Great Grandparents.
Recently my Grandpa has been telling me about what he remembers of the family and he mentioned that he knew about your Grandfather, John William. Did he emigrate to New Zealand? That is what my Grandpa seems to think he was told by Emmanuel, his Grandfather. Emmanuel lived with my Grandpa and his family for the last few years of his life and he thinks he died c1942, just before my Grandad left home for WW2. He says Emmanuel told him that they went to Liverpool together and John William got aboard a ship there and emigrated. Was he about 20 years old at the time, this is what my Grandpa seems to think but he is unsure? This is strange because we were talking on the telephone only last night about this. My Grandpa also remembers his Uncle Emmanuel very well and has a few stories about him and also about his Grandad too. He thinks he might have a couple of photos of Emmanuel(snr) and possibly one of Edmund(Ned) too, he's going to try and locate them.
I began searching for family history because my Grandpa told me about his Uncle George Cockshoot who was killed in action during WW1 and this got me interested in finding out more about George (I have more information on him if you haven't already got this). He told me about how his Uncle Emmanuel(Manny) also served in WW1 and also volunteered in WW2.
If you do pick up this message, I would really like to hear from you.
Kindest regards,
Dominic Ceraldi
PS. I have an Italian father, hence the surname.
