Morning :-)
while the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography was free last week-end I downloaded an article about the brothers John and James
COCKSHUT.
I've asked them for permission to post the article here but in the mean time: did anyone else read it ? I believe the brothers
were the sons of Joseph and Betty (LIGHTBOUND later HUNT). The article has them as the sons of John COCKSHUT, plumber and glazier,
and his wife, Alice (née Bromiley).
Any comments ?

Morning :-)
Has anyone got the above CDs ?
I ask because I've downloaded all COCKSHOTT/COCKSHUTT references for Yorkshire, Lancashire and London 1841 and 1851. I have the
Yorkshire ones but not the Lancs or London ones.

It's no wonder I couldn't find John .. he was christened WATSON (mother Elizabeth WATSON) 10th July 1842
Thomas COCKSHOTT, 24 year old power loom weaver born Cononley,
wife Elizabeth 29 born Colne,
son John WATSON 9 born Cononley,
COCKSHOTT children: Jane 6, Sarah Ellen 4 and Ann 2
As Thomas and Elizabeth didn't marry until 26th August 1844 you will need some other proof that John is Thomas' son and not just
adopted.

interesting facts in it.If you go to:
http://www.wharfegen.org.uk/
By Nic Wilson you can add 1 or 2 more generations to
this tree. Their is also a lot of Cockshotts listed
and the place that they found the information.

I've written to the Surrey archives asking about it .. whether it was named after a person or not.
I found one mention of it in 1775 on A2A ..
Cheers Jane

My ancestor was PHEBY COCKSHAW, b . ca 1678, who married John
Grimshaw in Rawden 3rd of 4th Mo: 1702. She died 21st 2m 1748 in
Calverly, Yorkshire. This information comes from the Knaresboro MM
records. Does anyone have information on her parents or suggestions
of where I might look for earlier information on her ancestry?

Hello Jane.
You mentioned on one of your emails you had details of Cockshotts in
Long Preston on the 1841 Census
Could you pass them on please.

I had a quick look at the Bracewell BTs while at the Borthwick .. 'cos just before leaving for England I found a James COCKSHOTT
in the 1851 census for Liverpool giving his place of birth as Bracewell.
Didn't find him but found this marriage 14 Nov 1805
Michael John MASON of Orsett Hamlet in the County of Essex Gentleman and Jane COCKSHOTT of this parish were married by licence
and a John COCKSHOTT of Bracewell probate 1838 mentioning his sister Jane MASON and leaving his gold watch to Michael John MASON.
Found 7 children chr. at Crondon Park RC (Essex) including a Thomas COCKSHOTT MASON
It seems these MASONs were Catholics:
"In pre-Reformation days, the Bishops of London had a country residence at Crondon Park on the north-west side of the village, and
a license to enclose the park was granted by King John in 1204. The Bishops built a chapel attached to this residence which was in
use until the property was seized by Henry VIII. In 1546 it was granted by the King to the Petre family, a strong Roman Catholic
family, and worship continued to be held there.
In 1715 Crondon came into the possession of the Mason family, also Roman Catholics, and a Mission was established here, served by
the Jesuit Fathers, and continued until the last century, when a chapel was built in 1875, attached to Lilystone Hall, ..... "

~~ My Cockshotts are some who were in the Lancashire area. Mostly in Salford
~~ and Manchester. Lawrence Cockshott and wife Mary Gallagher, married around
~~ 1840 and had several children before leaving for the US in 1862-1863.
~~ Lawrence went first in 1862, then his family followed in 1863. After a
~~ brief stopover in Illinois, they moved to Randolph county, Missouri and that
~~ is where Lawrence and his wife died. He only had one son, and that son died
~~ with no Cockshott heirs, so the name was lost after one generation. There
