Morning Edmund :-)
I've only just read the guest-book .. thank-you for writing. I can't help
you at the moment because I'm flying to England on Friday and haven't time
but I'm sure there is someone on the COCKSHOTT list who is related.
I'll forward this to the list and will get back to you at the end of July.
Cheers Jane

I am the grandson of Alice Mary Flack nee Cockshutt, b 13 June 1890; m Dr
Frederick Henry Douglas Flack at Burnley unk date; died 8 July 1955 at
Southport Lancs. I was named after my grand mother's brother, great uncle
Edmund Cockshutt who I remember when I was a small boy as living in
Macclesfield (Cheshire I think) where he had been a silk fabric designer. He
lost a leg in the First World war but remarkably, he played very competitive
golf and social cricket.
I would love to find out if there are any others interested in this branch
of the Cockshutt family tree.
Thank you for your interesting web site.

Hi Mary,
interesting :-)
I have 4 Margarets who could match (unless of course she was a widow at
marriage) but the most likely seems Margaret dau. of Thomas COCKSHOTT and
Sarah SHUTTLEWORTH chr. 1831 Addingham.
Mind you: I see from the 1871 that she says she is 37 !! which would make
her birth date later:
Nope 1881 she is back to 49 years old and in 1891 is 60 and is 70 in 1901.
They have a son named Lister ! would fit in quite well. Margaret's
grand-mother was Grace Lister and Thomas and Sarah named 2 sons Lister.
In 1851 she is with brother John:
30 year old farmer of 91 acres. Unmarried sisters Elizabeth 23 and Margaret
20.
Married sister Grace LISTER 37, Sarah PETTY 2 niece ?, Brother-in-law John
LISTER 39, nephew Michael LISTER 9 months
I'll copy to COCKSHOTT list, maybe someone knows them and can confirm the
marriage.
Cheers Jane

Yorkshire Made
Yorkshire and Humber Region Access 2 Archives (A2A) Project
Are you interested in the history of the Yorkshire Region? If so the Access
to Archives website can help you. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a.
Details of many prominent and important businesses' records are now fully
searchable on the freely available Access to Archives website . Records
spanning several centuries covering all aspects of Yorkshire's industrial
heritage have been included. Financed by a £45,000 grant from the Heritage
Lottery Fund the Yorkshire Archives Council project is being hosted by West
Yorkshire Archive Service.
Yorkshire's landscape was once dominated by huge factories, mines and
docklands. Yorkshire is famous for its coal mining, steel works , textile
industry, engineering and even chocolate manufacture. It is from this
diverse range of industry that much of the distinct character of Yorkshire
is derived.
Thousands of people from all around the world came to work in Yorkshire's
wide range of industries. The lives of these people, and those of the
wealthy business owners, are documented in the companies' records. Some of
these records have survived until the present day and are preserved and
looked after for the benefit of all by the region's archive offices.

Very good .. I'll see what else I can find .. in the meantime what about
this ? I can't find the name NAKINSON anywhere .. so ....
From Lancashire FreeBMD .. marriage in 1862
"Remarriage. Where the lady is remarrying and both her maiden name and
former married name are on the entry in the register, then both are listed
in the indexes. It is not possible to tell from the indexes which is the
maiden name."
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers
At Reference
AINSCOUGH James MAKINSON Elizabeth Burnley Register Office Burnley RM/18/70
AINSCOUGH James COCKSHUTT Elizabeth Burnley Register Office Burnley RM/18/70
I checked the GRO and it was MAKINSON/AINSCOUGH .... might be worth your
while buying that certificate, her father's name would help.
From the Cheshire FreeBMD
between 1856 and 1860 .. marriage Joseph COCKSHOOT and Maria ROYAL .. think
this must be the right one as in 1891 a Maria ROYAL born USA is the niece of
Joseph and Maria

~~ Hello Alison and Jane,
~~
~~
~~
~~ To fill you in with a little more of the Cockshoot family in question:
~~
~~
~~
~~ As we know Joseph Snr. was born in 1797 and died 13 April 1873. In his
~~ will, a copy of which I have, he left bequests to his niece Mary Ann
~~ Cockshoot, his niece Elizabeth Ainscough (nee Nakinson) and to the six
~~ children of his nephew Edward. These children were Joseph, Sarah Ann,
~~ Edward, Emily, Elizabeth and Robert William. He also mentions his
~~ nephew Joseph Lloyd, who was a photographer at 14 Haghton Street; his
~~ nephew Joseph Cockshoot, who we refer to as Joseph Jnr., and his nephew
~~ William Cockshoot and his children, Edward, Margaret, Thomas and
~~ Charles.
~~
~~
~~
~~ Joseph Jnr. was born 12 March 1818 and baptised 23 March 1818 (from
~~ IGI). As stated before he was the son of Edmund and Martha and was
~~ baptised at St. John’s, Deansgate, Manchester. He married Maria ? and
~~ died 14 September 1895.
~~
~~
~~
~~ This would make Joseph Snr. and Edmund brothers. The IGI lists the
~~ baptism of an Edmund Cockshoot 27 December 1789 at Manchester Cathedral,
~~ the parents are given as Joseph and Elizabeth. Could Edmund be the
~~ older brother of Joseph Snr., there being 8 years between them? We
~~ would really need to find an entry for Joseph Snr. giving the same
~~ parents – but no luck as yet!
~~
~~
~~
~~ Somewhere amongst my notes I have details on other family members, some
~~ of whom you mention, Alison. Given time I can look them up for you and
~~ pass it on.

Morning Jenny,
your "lot" are nothing but trouble makers :-)))
They change their name to suit the time of day I think. Found John Thomas's
brother Benjamin as COCKSCOLT in 1861 and COCKSHELL in 1881 .. haven't yet
found him in 1871.
In 1881 he is back at Goring Street where I found his parents in 1861. (63
year old bed stead maker, wife Sarah 60)

Hello Jane,
Thanks you so much for these details, I am sure I shall now find what I
want.
I am trying to find which Joseph started the garages because he is in some
way related to my daughter-in-law, whose grandfather is Randall COCKSHOOT
who in October will be 98 !!
Regards,
Alison.
