Richard "Dick" T. Bishop, age 82, of Bellingham, died on November 1, 2004.
He was born to Harry and Jessie Cockshott on February 12, 1922 in Lexstock,
Saskatchewan, Canada. He later chose to change his name to Bishop, his
mother's maiden name.
Dick spent his younger years in La Porte, Indiana. In 1944, he joined the
Army Air Corp. On a B-17 mission over Budapest in July 1944, his plane was
shot down and he suffered a severe cranial wound. His life was saved by a
German surgeon, and he was repatriated in a POW exchange.
After the war, Dick attended and graduated from the University of Chicago.
In September 1951, he married Margaret "Peggy" Nolan. She preceded him in
death in 1995. Dick discovered his love of teaching during a 4-year stay in
Mexico and was recruited into a graduate education degree program at
Michigan State University. Western Washington State College then sought him
out to be a faculty member in their program of education.
Dick served the College of Education with distinction, mentoring hundreds of
student teachers, until his retirement in 1987. During nearly forty years as
a Bellingham resident, he was very active in his church, the Bellingham
Unitarian Fellowship and many civic organizations which embodied his values:
various Viet Nam antiwar groups, the Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood,
the Farmer's Market, and Bellingham Co-housing.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy, whom he married in March 2002 and by his
two daughters, Kathleen Nolan and Carrie Bishop Cruz, her husband Ed Cruz,
and three grandchildren, Erin Heft, Sean Heft, and Kyle Cruz, all of
Bellingham. He is also survived by his sister Betty Box of LaPorte, IN. He
was preceded in death by his son Thomas and three brothers: George Cockshott
of Belmont, CA, Edward Bishop of Rochester, NY and John Cockshott of Punta
Gorda, FL.
A Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday, December 11th at 2:00 pm
at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 I Street, with the Rev. Douglas
E. Wadkins officiating. A reception will follow immediately. Memorial
contributions are suggested to the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship,
Bellingham Big Brothers Big Sisters, or Planned Parenthood.

great news .. no wonder I couldn't find them in Lancs !!
Looks like John really was born in Durham .. I always thought the 1861 "Durham" was an error for "Darwen" .. he could be the child
though who was reg. Blackburn 2nd. quarter 1851.
His father may have been this one .. needs a couple of look-ups first .. to see if he was a mason.
In 1807 a John marries a Margaret in Manchester
In 1810 a John and Margaret chr. daughter Mary Ann in Manchester

~~ Hello Jane
~~
~~ Yes, I think that there is a very good possibility that this marriage to Ann
~~ Marsden is the same Abraham and following on from this that the burial of
~~ Abraham in 1828 Aug 13 age 77 at Darwen Chapel is one and the same. Perhaps
~~ he is the one

~~
~~ This would fit in with my estimation of his age.
~~
~~ I noticed too that Diane Whalley agrees with Abraham being married twice.
~~
~~ I can see that I shall have to have another good look at the records I
~~ extracted from the Blackburn churches.
~~
~~ That will keep my brain busy for a while :))

information HUNT LIGHTBOWN]
Hi Jane
Not a direct answer to your question but if you haven't already found it
there is a fair bit of information on the Paper Mills in Darwen on the
Cotton Towns Website at
http://www.cottontown.org/page.cfm?LANGUAGE=eng&pageID=1276
It is worth exploring a little deeper than the index, using the Advanced
Search (Keywords)and reading the articles headed:- Belgrave Mill, Hollins
Paper Mill, Orchard Mills, Walpamur, Darwen Mill, and Paint Manufacturing in
Darwen part of the Potters empire and Walpamur (Wall Paper Manufacturers
Company)- look at the smaller base of Queens Mill and how they took over
Sanderson and eventually became "Crown".
Also do a Cotton Towns search on Huntington, (no relation to me) and how CP
& James joined Potters from their french wallpaper design company
"Huntington Freres" based in Paris c1865
Bernard.
Morning :-)
the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has an article about the
brothers John and James COCKSHUT.
"Cockshut is known largely for his contribution to the British wallpaper
industry. His involvement began when, aged eight, he went
to work for C. H. and E. Potter of Darwen, where mechanization was
pioneered. Details of any formal education and of the nature of
his work at Potters remain unknown but he was probably employed initially in
the production of handblock-printed wallpapers. Apart
from a short break at a cotton mill, Cockshut, joined later by his brother,
James, remained there until he was about twenty, when
they joined their uncle (formerly cashier at Potters) in his own firm,
Lightbown, Aspinall & Co., at Pendleton, near Manchester."
I believe the brothers were the sons of Joseph and Betty (LIGHTBOWN later
HUNT). The article has them as the sons of John
COCKSHUT, plumber and glazier, and his wife, Alice (née BROMILEY).
the family in 1861: Hayfield Place, Pendleton
John HUNT 51, packer, paper hangings
Betty HUNT 46,
Esther C. HUNT 25
John C. HUNT 23, commercial traveller
James C. HUNT 21
Mary Ann HUNT 19, designer paper hangings
Henry C. HUNT 17, packer paper hangings
Roger S. HUNT 9, scholar
There are private submissions on the IGI for John being the son of John and
Alice .. but did they pick up the info. from this
article ??
