Morning Tania,
I joined the Manchester list a couple of weeks ago with requests for look-ups in the Cathedral records .. I had one answer but
hadn't realised how many COCKSHOTTs are connected to Manchester. At the moment my database turns up 200 people either born or
married there ... include spouses and one generation each of ancestors and descendants makes a total of 338. I have uploaded them
all to WorldConnect. If you find out more from PRs and wills I'd be grateful for the info. for the list.
Cheers Jane

Subject: Manx Cockshutts
Dear Jane
I went to the Manx Museum yesterday and came across the following entry
from Vol IV (1932-42) of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian
Society from a paper by Mr P.W. Caine on "The Second Episode on Illiam
Dhone"
P136 "Mr Ainsworth has examined deeds which show that in 1633 William
Christian, who is described variously as "of Little Harwood" and "of
Ronaldsway in the Isle of Man" purchased lands at Sparth, situate in
Clayton Harwood and Rishton - which areas are in the neighbourhood of
Accrington - together with household goods and coalpits, for £900. In
1637 he executed a deed conveying Sparth and two other plots of land
called Birdholme and Warthe, to Roger Nowell and Laurence Duxbury, to
hold in trust for him during his life, with remainder to his wife for
her life in lieu of dower, remainder to his eldest son, and remainder to
other sons in order. He made this settlement "in consequence of £600
paid by Alice, the wife of George Cockshutt, of Great Harwood, deceased,
and in consequence of the affection he has for Elizabeth his wife"
The above is a bit oblique for my liking but a start!
Kind regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
No hurry at all BUT if you do ever have time I'd like to know the source for her name.
I spent a bit of time on the net reading about him and I can't see her name mentioned in the more serious excerpts .. a lot of web
pages with family trees have her as Elizabeth COCKSHUTT, daughter of George of Great Harwood
One page does say:
"William Illiam Dhone Christian, the Manx patriot and martyr, married Elizabeth Cottier in 1630. On Man her name is pronounced
roughly Cotcher and sometimes appears in the records as Cockshutt."
Did someone pick this up and look for an Elizabeth COCKSHUTT born around about the right date ?
Cheers Jane

Jane ,
this is what I have in my database I hope it helps you;
Descendants of Lucy E Smead
Generation No. 1
1. LUCY E9 SMEAD (ELIHU FARLEY8, ELIHU7, ELIHU6, REUBEN5, JOHN4, JOHN3,
WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born June 30, 1867 in Pennsylvania, and died
September 25, 1886. She married JOHN COCKSHOTT July 16, 1882 in Randolph Co
Mo, son of LAWRENCE COCKSHOTT and MARY GALLOWAY. He was born March 1851 in
England, and died September 04, 1911 in Committed suicide/Higbee Randolph CO
MO.
Notes for JOHN COCKSHOTT:
(5) From "The Higbee News" 8 Sep 1911--JOHN COCKSHOT DRINKS CARBOLIC ACID AT
HOME OF HIS
SISTER--John Cockshot, aged 60 years, killed himself Monday evening at 7
o'clock by drinking carbolic acid at the home of his sister, Mrs. Thos.
Sutliff (Elizabeth Cockshot Longdon Sutliff), in the west part of town.
He was a man who drank more or less, but so far as we can learn had not been
drinking that day. He had not been feeling well and had Dr. T. H. Dinwiddie
prescribe for him, but failed to return for the medicine after it had been
compounded.
It is supposed that he took the fatal dose in a fit of despondency or that
he was temporarily deranged. After he swallowed the poison he went into the
house, and his sister, who knew he was complaining, told him to lie down on
the bed. He did so, remarking that the next bed he would lie on would be his
own. His tone more than the remark alarmed the family and they summoned a
doctor, who found Mr. Cockshot dead on his arrival.
Coroner Adams held an inquest Tuesday, the verdict of the jury being that
deceased came to his death from carbolic acid poisoning self administered.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday and interment made in the
city cemetery.
Deceased was born in England in 1851 and came to this country in 1863,
locating at Renick where he followed mining.
He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Lucy Smeed of Renick. A few
years following her death he married Mrs. Anna Galloway of Novinger, where
he resided until her death about a year ago.
He is survived by five sisters. viz: Mrs. Thos. Sutliff, Mrs. R. R. Jones,
Mrs. Mary Pilkington, all of Higbee; Mrs. W. A. Davis of Taylorville, Ill.,
and Mrs. Wm. Whaley, of Ward, Ia. all of whom were present at the funeral
except the latter.
Deceased was a quiet, inoffensive man and popular with all who knew him. The
bereaved ones have our sympathy.
Have no proof on Mrs. Anna Galloway. I've never been able to find a thing on
her, but Gerald Hocker thought she might have been married first to a
brother or nephew of Mary. Again, no proof , just family legend. Didn't have
a death date on Lucy Smead Cockshot, just that she had died sometime before
1895. If anybody has access to the 1910 census records, John and family
should be in Novinger at that time, according the obit. Think Novinger is in
Adair county, but not sure. (this was written to Robin by Kathy Bowlin)

I'm having another go at the Randolph County COCKSHOTTs.
Couple of questions:
In 1870:
Mary Anne, 26 years old with Thomas CLIFT (28, born England) and daughter (I presume this should be step-daughter) Annie 6 born MO.
I had Mary Anne christened 10 Mar 1844
(Recorded in: Coppull, Lancashire, England Father: Lawrence COCKSHOUT Mother: Mary Source: FHL Number 1068752)
but her obit says she was born 5th December 1844 in Manchester !? ... should this be 1843 ?
Can someone confirm:
Violet married Joseph B. EDWARDS
John married Lucy E. SMEAD
Is Lucy the mother of Pearl ? did Lucy and John have more children ? I found a 61 year old widowed Lucy in 1920 with sons Ralph and
Lawrence !?
Cheers

I've had this one for quite a while but put it to one side as "unreadable". Charles could read it !!

Evening :-)
Is there anyone on this list who actually enjoys ruining their eyes reading old hand writing ?
I've downloaded a few COCKSHOTT wills from the PRO and can't make head nor tail of them ... not quite true .. I've been staring at
them all day and now can recognise all the boring bits quite easily and of course COCKSHOTT jumps out at me but I'm having trouble
with the rest.
Quite tantalising seeing " ... to my brother ??? COCKSHOTT"
TIA
Cheers Jane
