I have seen Harvey's attestation papers .. signed on the 3rd Dec. 1914 ..
I read the next of kin as Mrs J. COCKSHUTT at 40, Lorne Crescent.
According to the site Judy sent : 40 Lorne Crescent was the Watt House
"Original owner- William Watt, lawyer, former Sherriff of Brant County and owner
of the Brantford Expositor 1874-1880, president of the Canadian Press and
Secretary of the Board of Trade, Alderman, Secretary of the Liberal Association-
resident 1875-1922 (Canadian Album- Men of Canada 1891. The Sampler, A Book
About Brantford, March 1979).
Mary Stewart Cockshutt (daughter of Wm. Watt)- resident 1892-1923."
Was Mary Stewart COCKSHOTT Harvey's mother ?

We all seemed to be in a reminiscent mood that evening. Harvey Cockshutt and I
spent a pleasant hour, after "Chuck" left, discussing our plans for after the
war. Poor old Harvey's dreams were never to be realised. He too, died doing his
duty like the brave fellow he was. It was recognised throuhjout the 4th C.M.R.
that he was one of our finest officers.
Note: "Chuck" was killed the next day too.
My father, who was also a Lieutenant in the 4th C.M.R., and Lt. Douglas, were
wounded and captured by the Germans the day after Lt. Cockshutt was killed.
Harvey Cockshutt is in the Canadian Virtual War Memorial online and also in the
Book Of Remembrance in the Parliament Building in Ottawa.

Think how I felt when I found his father William as Cockschool!
With Samuel's occupation as packing case maker and a son called Abraham,
there cannot be much doubt that this is the same family.
Again, I shall need to do some more checking on the death and marriage
index. I must admit that I hadn't done much more on these as I couldn't see
any obvious connection between them but what you have given me will get me
going on them again.
Thanks

Hi Annette :-)
Just happened on this one: (was looking at all Janes in 1891)
14, Simly Street, Deptford,
Emily E. KEITH, 37, head, married, born Deptford
Children:
Emily J. 8
John J. 5
Ada 2
Florence 2 months
Jane COCKSHOTT, 29, is her sister-in-law !?
Or does it mean sister in law of the head who is usually Thomas !?
Was Thomas a sailor ?
there is a 40 year old Thomas KEITH, married, born Deptford, engineer, as a crew
member on board the Chevington.
Cheers Jane

Dear Jane,
I am trying to research my Grandmother's family history and one of the searches
came up with your name.
My Grandmother's name was Ada Adeline Keith (birth date 9.08.1888) in Lewisham
England
Her mother was Emily Eliza Cockshott (birthdate 1854)
Emily was married to Thomas Ramsey Keith on 15.11.1881 at All Saints, Deptford,
Kent, England.
I believe there were other children in this marriage
John, Nin (possibly Bertha), Maggie and a Florence Maud Keith (who could have
been the daughter of Nin or Maggie)
Would you have any further information about this family?
Thanking you
With Kind Regards

Just found these at Ancestry:
Seems to be the Lucy I found in the 1920 census: 61 year old Lucy, widow, with
sons Ralph W. 28 and Lawrence J. 25 ?

Andrew Cockshott 52 Penn W Muscatine Wilton
Lucy Cockshott 36 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Dell Cockshott 11 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Luke Cockshott 8 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Dren Cockshott 6 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Ralph Cockshott 3 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Lawrance Cockshott 0 Muscatine Iowa W Muscatine Wilton
Perhaps someone with easy access can look at the films !?
Microfilmed copies of this census are held at the State Historical Society of
Iowa and the LDS Family History Library. The 1890 U.S. Federal Census was
damaged and destroyed by fire in 1921. Less than 1 percent of the schedules are
available for research today. Because of this problem, the 1895 Iowa State
Census has become a highly valuable source as it provides a wealth of
information that would otherwise be found in the Federal Census.

Morning Carole,
nice to see some of my ideas are right :-)))
Have you got a burial for the Abraham who married Nanny GRIME ? She died in 1798
making him a widower.
This is just a thought: In 1807 a widowed Abraham married Mary RUSSEL and on
21st July 1810 William was christened to Abraham and Mary.
Could this be the same Abraham ? making William and Elijah half-brothers ? and
then the Moses chr. 1820 would be the nephew ?
See what you think .. if not I'll get back to the drawing board :-)
Cheers Jane

Dear Jane
I am interested in any further information on the connection between these
people - this is what I have so far.
William Cockshott born about 1810 Darwen Lancs, married Sarah Alice Ashton

marr Hannah Robinson 9 Oct 1853; Hannah bp 16 Aug 1835; Abraham b.c1837; Ann

have been mixed up)
William senior appears in Trade Directories for 1841, 1843 & 1845 as a
Skinner.
William's marriage record to Lydia Challinor shows his father as Abraham
Cockshoot coal miner.
In 1881 William, Lydia and their son (all shown as Cockschool) are in Miller
St Manchester with their son Thomas Moses Cockshott (born 1875) He is 71 and
she is 40.
William died in 1883 and his Will was passed for probate in April 1884. He
appointed his son in law George Pilkington and nephew Moses Cockshott as
executors. His son Thomas Moses Cockshott was beneficiary.
When Moses Cockshott died in 1889 he named George Pilkington my friend as
his executor.
Moses Cockshott was born in Blackburn about 1819 the son of Elijah a weaver
and Ann (aka Nanny & nee Smith) and Elijah's father was Abraham also a
weaver. Moses married Margaret Ingram and when he died he was the licensed
victualler of the Masons Arms Hotel Audley Lane Blackburn. His daughter
Nancy and son in law Daniel Gregson then became the licensees.
Can anyone help me with the connection between Moses & William Cockshott?

and a Sarah Alice COCKSHOTT.
A christening at the cathedral 29th Sept. 1844 of a Sarah Alice, parents William
and Sarah Alice ASHTON who married there 12th. Aug. 1832.
I wonder whether it is the same William !? who later married Lydia !?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers Jane

Evening UK :-)
Thank-you .. with this and the other records you found the pieces all seems to
fit .. I think William was the same one who married Sarah Alice ASHTON 12th Aug.
1832 .. in 1844 he was a skinner and now he's a leather dresser .. same thing
but sounds better :-)
Cheers Jane

Evening Craig,
yes, thank-you, it is of interest. What do you think ? the one in Manchester has
only one acre but it's worth a fortune compared to the others. Would that
indicate buildings in a town rather than farming land ?
Cheers Jane
