Morning all :-)
I feel a bit guilty this morning .. when I started the COCKSHOTT list I
wanted to post everything I found (and I've found/been sent a lot) .. then I
had a few months off last year and things just piled up.
I also had the idea of adding the information to my database then
posting/forwarding the mails. Which turned out to be one of my not so bright
ideas 'cos if I drop dead later to-day the information will be lost !!
So: I'll do it the other way round .. expect a lot of postings in the next
few days :-)))
****************************************************************************
**************
I will then (starting with the above family) start adding a ONS (One Name
Study) COCKSHOTT tree to World Connect at Rootsweb. I will add everything
I've found (with sources) and the names of known researchers.
I had a quick look at some of the COCKSHOTTs on there already and was
horrified to see the same mistakes that are on the IGI from private
submissions.
For example: one of my PET HATES is: <Mrs Margaret COCKSHUTT> !!!!!!!!
I have to date found only one marriage of a COCKSHOTT to a COCKSHOTT :-)
so: if you don't know the bride's surname: please say so.
****************************************************************************
**************
Another thing: I have received a lot of requests for information from people
I suspect are paid researchers. I don't mind helping but it would be nice to
have SOME feedback.
For the above family for example: they didn't leave England until ca. 1863
so they should be in the 1861 census , probably in the Lancashire area. Has
anyone that information ?
All of the children were born after 1837 when civil registration began.
Using the obits and American census information I have been sent it should
be easy enough to order the certificates.
If a few of you are researching the same family you could share the costs.
Cheers Jane
Does anyone actually have the birth certificates of the 6 children ?
I have christening records of Mary Ann and Harriet.
Cheers Jane

Hello
I am hoping the obit that follows will attract the attention of someone who
recognized a connection. It was published in the Higbee News, a newspaper
from Higbee, Randolph CO MO, which is being transcribed by a fellow
researcher/cousin.
*I have added additional information in parenthesis.
8 Sep 1911--JOHN COCKSHOT DRINKS CARBOLIC ACID AT HOME OF HIS SISTER--John
Cockshot, aged 60 years, killed himself Monday evening at 7 o'clock by
drinking carbolic acid at the home of his sister, Mrs. Thos. Sutliff
(Elizabeth Cockshot Longdon Sutliff), in the west part of town. He was a man
who drank more or less, but so far as we can learn had not been drinking
that day. He had not been feeling well and had Dr. T. H. Dinwiddie prescribe
for him, but failed to return for the medicine after it had been compounded.
It is supposed that he took the fatal dose in a fit of despondency or that
he was temporarily deranged. After he swallowed the poison he went into the
house, and his sister, who knew he was complaining, told him to lie down on
the bed. He did so, remarking that the next bed he would lie on would be his
own. His tone more than the remark alarmed the family and they summoned a
doctor, who found Mr. Cockshot dead on his arrival. Coroner Adams held an
inquest Tuesday, t!
he verdict of the jury being that deceased came to his death from carbolic
acid poisoning self administered. Funeral services were held at the home
Wednesday and interment made in the city cemetery. Deceased was born in
England in 1851 and came to this country in 1863, locating at Renick
(Randolph CO MO) where he followed mining. He was twice married, his first
wife being Miss Lucy Smead of Renick. A few years following her death he
married Mrs. Anna Galloway of Novinger, where he resided until her death
about a year ago. He is survived by five sisters. viz: Mrs. Thos.
Sutliff-(Elizabeth Cockshot Longdon Sutliff), Mrs. R. (Richard) R.
Jones-(Margaret Cockshot Hick Jones), Mrs. Mary Pilkington-(Mary A Shephard
Clift Pilkington), all of Higbee; Mrs. W. (William) A. Davis-(Harriet
Cockshot Davis) of Taylorville, Ill., and Mrs. Wm. Whaley-(Alice Cockshot
Whaley), of Ward, Ia. all of whom were present at the funeral except the
latter. Deceased was a quiet, inoffensive man and pop!
ular with all who knew him. The bereaved ones have our sympathy.
If you think there is any chance that we might connect, please contact me.
Thanks for your attention. I am willing to exchange information.

If he was nearly 80 when he died in 1886 we have a birthdate of ca. 1806 but I have him down as ca. 1816 !?
Have you got him in a census ? (to check his age)?
Cheers Jane

Hello
I am hoping that the following two obits will help me find the connection I am searching. The first obit was taken from the Higbee News, a newspaper for Higbee, Randolph CO MO, which a fellow researcher/cousin is transcribing. The second obit was taken from another area newspaper called the Huntsville Herald also of Randolph CO MO, which my sister located.
*Please note that I have added additional information in parenthesis.
Friday, 24 April 1914---MRS. ELIZABETH SUTLIFF DEAD---Mrs. Elizabeth (Cockshot Longdon) Sutliff, who had been in failing health for the past year or more, died at her home in this place at 4:00 Thursday morning, April 23, 1914, from a complication of diseases, aged 72 years. Mrs. Sutliff, whose maiden name was Cockshot, was born in England in 1842, and came to this country with her parents (Lawrence Cockshot and Mary Galloway Cockshot) in 1863. She was married the same year to Thos. (Thomas John ) Longdon, who died some twelve or fifteen years ago (April 10, 1905). They were the parents of seven children, all of whom are living, viz: Mmes. John Smead-(Mary Ellen “Nell“ Longdon Smead), John Goin-(Elizabeth “Liza“ J Longdon Goin), Lee (Levi Samuel) Lloyd-(Hanna “Anna“ Longdon Lloyd), Thos Garrington-(Sarah Longdon King Garrington), and Thomas (Thomas John Longdon, Jr.) and Wm. (Lawrence) Longdon, Sr.. She is also survived by fou!
r sisters, Mmes, W. A. (William A) Davis-( Harriet Cockshot Davis), Taylorville, Ill., R. R. ( Richard R) Jones-(Margaret Cockshot Hick Jones) , Independence, W. (William) Wallie-(Alice Cockshot Whalley/Wallie), Iowa and Mary Pilkington-(Mary A Cockshot Shephard Clift Pilkington), Higbee. Some seven or eight years ago she was married to Thos. Sutliff, who died two years ago (Jan 20, 1912). The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday at the home of Mr. Goin and interment made in the city cemetery (Higbee Cemetery, Higbee, Randolph CO MO). In her death her children have lost a loving and devoted mother and the sympathy of all goes out to them in their bereavement.
Her father's obit follows:
Huntsville Herald, (Randolph CO MO) issue dated August 25, 1886
(under heading: Renick Reporter brevities)
At the residence of his son-in-law, R R (Richard) Jones (married to Margaret Cockshot Hick Jones), Mr. Lawrence Cockshot died Wednesday of last week. At the time of his death, Mr. Cockshot was nearly 80 years of age, and had been a near resident of this place since 1867...
Should any information attract your attention, please contact me. Thanks for your kind attention. I am willing to exchange information.

Making History
A gentlemans travelling case in the Crimea
Humphrey Stevens from Suffolk has in his possession a gentlemans or officer
s travelling case. It is made of mahogany and measures approximately 10 x 8
x 5 inches. The lid is stamped by its maker, Dalton of 85 Regent Street. The
key to the box has a parchment tag initialled CH. The box has brass
metalwork (handles, etc.) on it.
Inside the box is a tray for razors, tweezers, scissors and a Morden silver
pencil. Below is an ivory shoehorn and ivory-backed brushes. There are three
glass jars with silver caps, one of which contains white crystals. The
largest jar cap has a makers mark: HM Birmingham 1855. Ornately engraved in
capital script is BHH to CH, Sebastopol December 28th 1855. Humphrey
Stevens wanted to know the significance of the date and who CH and BHH might
have been.
Making History spoke to Martin Hargreave Mawson of the Crimean War Research
Society. On the assumption that the box belonged to, or was a present from,
an officer of the British Army, Martin checked the Army List for 1856 and
came across two men with the initials, both sharing the same surname. BHH
was Bache Harpur Heathcote, who served in the Crimean War as a Lieutenant
and later a Captain in the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot. CH was
Cockshutt Heathcote, who appears to have been his father or at least of
his fathers generation.
It is possible that CH went to the Crimea as a visitor. This was a very
popular thing for gentlemen with friends or relations in the Army to do. The
date is after the war but when British troops were still stationed there.
