Hello again Jane,
I seem to have missed how this COCKSHUTT searching started, I joined in
because I used to live in Trawden and now live not too far away from
Winewall and Trawden. Since you seem to have an interest in the COCKSHUTTs,
here are a few more that I found in the transcriptions in our Branch of
LFH&HS at Colne Library. The Parish Church in Colne is St Bartholomew's and
Christ Church is on the Laneshawbridge side of Colne and will be the parish
church which covers Winewall. Christ Church dates from about 1836 but the
parish church records go back for several hundreds of years - to about 1560
I think.

Just a quick response, Jane.
Yes, this is my family of interest...
The MISTAKE I see on the index that causes the confusion......
is that instead of 1892, 1894, and 1896...the birth years are 1872, 1874,
and 1876 for the
boys!!!
(and daughter MAUDE would be 1898)
(BTW, where did you find the index?)........

Hi Jane.....while perusing the Alliston, Ontario, Canada site for some
information on an ancester, I ran across a Luncheon Menu that was served by
the good ladies of Alliston, when honoring "Lieutenant-Governor Cockshutt".
Problem being it doesn't give his first name or the date of the soiree.
Maybe he is one of yours?

DOH !! pity .. :-))
By rights ! they should have married in Gargrave and made things easier for
everyone but can't see them there on the records I have.
I think this probate will be of interest to you:
17 February 1820 Will of Thomas Cockshutt , Stockbroker of Kennington Row ,
Surrey (Online PRO)
Your Job's will starts off with "late of the Stock Exchange but now of the
Parish of St. Mary Rotherhide in the County of Surrey but now ship breaker"
I'm having a look at the people I have with a connection to Surrey and
London.
Cheers Jane
PS
I downloaded the will of John COCKSHUTT of Silkstone .. can't make head nor
tail of it. He's not "mine" but I did wonder why it was probated in 1806
because he died about 8 years before then LOL

Hello to all.
With the recent discussion about Ignatius, I think it's time that I post my interest with hopes that there are other listers that are connected to the COCKSHUTT family of Brantford, Ontario Canada.
My grandfather's sister (surname: ASHTON) married (1891) W.F. COCKSHUTT (son of Ignatius) and my father spent much of his childhood with his Cockshutt cousins.
One of W.F's sons...'ASHTON COCKSHUTT!' was very interested in family history and prepared a rough family tree in the 1980s.
I have a copy of it and am most interested in hearing from anyone else that may be connected to this family so as to update Ashton's research.
Thanks,
Judy in Canada
Morning :-)
Brenda was kind enough to look at the records for those Bradford/Winewall
COCKSHOTTs .. she added a few more who are also of interest ..
Cheers Jane
PS
I'm sure the "James" chr. 1811 should be Jane
"1840--his father sold the company to Ignatius and his sister Jane; they
operated it under the name "I. & J. Cockshutt" and it was in business for 42
years"

Ah very good .. I'm just uploading as I type .. didn't see this about Sally
.. what I think is:
Stephen wrote his will in 1818 before he had children. He died before 16th
October 1823 (probate) and the Stephen Job I found was born 5th of May 1823.
Stephen Job was chr. at St. Dunstan's in Stepney and your new will was
"Stephen of Stepney".
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cockshottlist&id=
I9670
I had the death of Farrand in 1803 but I have also not found his marriage.
Of course: it all needs checking but I think this is the right family.
The difficulty is of course in the surname variations e.g. the William I
think is Job's brother has 4 variations, only 2 of which are picked up by
the soundex on the IGI.

Just had another look through some Gargrave records .....
Farrand Cockshott of Coniston, Butcher & Sarah Nuttall of Frier Head, both
of this par. mar. by Lic. (from Revd Mr Carr, Surr:) 26 Jun 1788 by H:
Croft, Vicar--Farrand Cockshott, Sally Nuttall--George Gill, John Pearson
(I wonder where the license was issued ? could that Surr be Surrey ?)
THAT nearly seals it 'cos William was also a butcher :-))) (Farrand was a
witness and also a James CAYLEY)
Cheers Jane
I'll add this newest marriage to-morrow then look at those CAYLEY burials.

Hi Jane,
Have just sent a message to the list explaining what I know of my
Cockshotts.... downloaded the will of Stephen. It was kind of a waste,
only half a page, and only mentions wife Mary...but thought you might like
it for your files. I'm stumped as to which brother was Stephen's father --
IGI lists a Stephen Francis Cockshott, born 6 Jan 1784, bap 22 Feb 1784 at
Kildwick, of William/Sarah -- does this sound plausible to you? I found
records of Farrand Cockshott and his wife Sarah (Sally); and Farrand's
death by drowning at the age of 43 in 1803 -- so I assume he probably had
children, but I find no baps in the IGI.
Best,
Dorian

My guess is that "Surr" is for Surrogate, not Surrey.

PS -- Wouldn't it be lovely to find Job's and Sophia's wedding!

I found, in Pallot's Marriage Index, Stephen Cockshott of St. Mary
Rotherhithe and Mary Hooper married 1814 in Stepney St. Dunstan by licence.
Stephen's address in his will is Stepney; their child Stephen Job
Cockshott born 5 May, bap 14 Sep 1823 at St. Dunstan, Stepney -- I think we
have a match! (How sad that the will of Stephen Cockshott was probated 16
Oct 1823, just a month after the christening -- wonder how he died??)
I see the marriage for William and Ellen Brown -- in Gargrave, actually,
which would make sense if he were Stephen/Ann's son. He is "of par. of
Manchester co. palatine of Lancaster, butcher" and James CAYLEY is a
witness as well as Farrand Cockshott -- sounds very promising, I think.
What do you think??
Dorian
PS -- Gotta love those parish records from ancestry.com!

Hello --
Thanks, Jane, for your help with my Cockshotts. I came across information
on this family quite by accident recently, which has led me back to the
Yorkshire roots of my Cockshotts. My grandmother, who saved everything,
God bless her, had written a paper with some family history on it, and she
mentioned that my 3xg grandmother was named "Anne Elizabeth Cockshoot" and
that she married Abel Taylor. Anne Elizabeth's mother's maiden name was
"Hughes." Armed with that information, I went to the IGI and found a
baptism of an "Ann Mary Cockshott" dau of Job and Sophia 15 Jun 1814 at St.
Mary Rotherhithe, Surrey. She also had a brother, Job Farrand Cockshott.
This information lay in my file for a year until 2 weeks ago, when I was
browsing the PRO Will site, http://www.pro-online.pro.gov.uk/ This site is
fantastic, and I recommend it to anyone doing family history in England.
For some reason (because I hadn't thought of them in months), I decided to
type in "Cockshott" in the search engine at the site. Up came "Will of Job
Cockshott...Ship Breaker of Saint Mary Rotherhithe, Surrey." I couldn't
believe my eyes. Clearly this was my Job Cockshott -- my grandmother had
mentioned that "Abel Taylor" was a ship broker, so that fit too. For a
measly 3 pounds I downloaded the will -- eureka! In the will Job mentions
his wife Sophia, his daughter Ann Mary, his sister Mary Kayley, his nephew
Stephen Cayley/Kayley, his deceased nephew Stephen Cockshott and Stephen's
son Job Cockshott. He also gives his sister's address as Hallifield near
Skipton in the County of York. This sent me to the Yorkshire parish
records, where I was able to reconstruct the family back to Job's father
Stephen, his grandfather Farrand [!], his great-grandfather Robert and
Robert's father William, all living in the Gargrave/Kildwick area of
Yorkshire.
To follow up, Jane pointed out a will of Stephen Cockshott, Mariner, at the
PRO site, which I have also downloaded. Alas, it was not too informative,
only mentioning Stephen's wife Mary as heir and executrix. But I suspect,
as Jane does, that Stephen is the "deceased nephew" of Job, since he died
the year before Job did.
So that's my Cockshott story. If you have anything to add, I'd love to
hear from you!
Regards,
Dorian Greenbaum
I've had a better look at the James COCKSHUTT who went to Canada. His wife
was Mary NIGHTINGALE and they married
26 MAR 1810 Broughton Near Skipton.
Now I've found a Joshua COCKSHUTT who married an Elizabeth NIGHTINGALE 7th
Dec. 1813 .. also Broughton Near Skipton.
They both christened children at the Wine Wall Inghamite (whatever THAT is),
Colne, Lancs.
What's the betting 2 brothers married 2 sisters ?
Anyway: has anyone access to these PRs ? no hurry ...
TIA
Jane

Morning Judy :-)
Thank-you .. yes .. that's them .. actually they turned out to be a pillars
of Brantford .. founded the
Cockshutt Plow Company which was great for them but does make searching the
web a bit of a nuisance ..
keeps turning up plows and tractors etc.
http://www.cockshutt.com/history.htm
Cheers Jane
PS
Using GOOGLE advanced search I can cut out any mention of "plow", "plows"
"tractor" or "tractors" etc. and reduce the number of "finds" from 34,000 to
8,000 LOL
