Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Morning Dale and everyone else :-)
Every message that goes over the Rootsweb servers is archived ! and I hope
for ever .. long after we are dead and buried :-)
Which means:
one of the first steps in Genealogy on-line is : join mailing lists ..
regional and surname.
Leave messages .. maybe find your ancestors and help your distant
cousins/descendants find YOU.
.. start here:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/
A complete index to RootsWeb's
21,365 genealogy mailing lists!
For DYSON :
http://lists5.rootsweb.com/index/surname/d/dyson.html
There are instructions for joining the list and you can search or browse the
archives.
After you join a Rootsweb mailing list you will receive a welcome message
telling you how to post a message so that everyone can read it.
Then post your first message.
Tell us who you are, who you are looking for, what you have so far.
So .. that was your first message .. who knows ? maybe next month a distant
cousin will find you.
I personally post anything/everything I find to do with a particular
surname.
Even if it's not my family and unlikely to ever be my family.
The name mentioned in an obituary, a household in a census, a convict sent
to Australia ...
And I encourage all members of the lists I administrate to do the same.
Searching the archives:
e.g. I have a Martha DYSON who married a TINGLE, before that she was married
a HIRST all in the Bolsterstone area of Yorkshire.
Typing in DYSON won't help much :-) but typing in a given name or the name
of a village or spouse might turn up something:
Was that more than you wanted to know ?? LOL
Cheers Jane

Hello List, I'm a new subscriber tracing my Cockshoot/Cockshott/Cockshutt
relatives. My great grandfather was James Cockshoot, born 1860 in Egerton,
Turton, later herbalist of Bank Street, Accrington, where he had four
children Betsy Mary, Alice Anne, Henry (Harry) and John James. Henry,
injured
in WW1, had a son Jack who may still be alive in Accrington. John James had
a
daughter called Bessie, who may have been the Mayoress of Accrington at one
time. My gggrandfather was John Cockshoot, an agricultural labourer, born
Toppings, Turton around 1830.
If any of this is familiar to other list members I would be grateful to hear
from you.
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Jane,
Thank you for your email.
My James is 1860, born in Toppings, Turton, living in Accrington in 1881.
I have John, his father, on the 1861 census age 30 so I'm afraid I just gave
the wrong date of birth. It should have been 1831 or 1830. In 1861 the
family
were living at Egerton, Turton: John Cockshoot with wife Mary (Marsden) and
son James (11 months).
I don't know who Carol is.

Andrew
Hi Al :-)
Yes .. I have the family and remember us "talking" before ..
I have your James as born 1860 (21 in 1881 census) .. is that right ? or is
it 1869 ?
What other information do you have ? have you found them in the census
1841-1871 ?
I have 15 Johns born in that time period .. only 1 gives his Birthplace as
Accrington .. and he's the one in prison in 1881 :-))

Jane,
I think I may have asked you this once: I wonder if your Cockshoot relatives
had any Lancashire connections, my Cockshoots/shots/shutts are from Turton,
Accrington and Blackburn area. So far Ive only reached back as far as John
Cockshhoot born around 1839 in Turton.
Regards,
Andrew
Morning Kathy :-)
No, not many .. in fact there are about 14 .... ROTFL .. if you subscribe to
the COCKSHOTT list we'll be 15 :-)
As I said on my "COCKSHOTT" page:
http://www.janelachs.de/cockshott/cockshott.htm
my GGG-Grand-father was John COCKSHOTT who turned up in Emley (Yorkshire)
ca. 1782 when David was born.
I'm concentrating on this John at the moment.
As for the rest: my database contains 8,500 COCKSHOTTs. Yesterday I looked
for your Elizabeth .. but I have 5 or 6 born 1841/1842 so which one is yours
??
I have a PML search for the name and every time I find something I pass it
on to the list.

Let's talk, Jane,
These Cockshott's are my direct line. Elizabeth, mentioned in the
obituary was my great-great grandmother. I have a lot of information and
would be happy to share. I live in Butler, Missouri. My line of descent is
this:
Thomas Cockshott and Mary Galloway parents of
Elizabeth Cockshott married Thomas Longdon, parents of
Hanna (Anna) Longdon married Levi Samuel Lloyd, parents of
John Hobson Lloyd, married Roxie Atkins, parents of
Harold Eugene Lloyd married Esther Hemphill, parents of
me, Kathleen Joyce Lloyd Bowlin
Finding a Cockshott cousin is a rare find. There aren't many of us around
apparently, who are interested in pursuing genealogy. Where are you from,
and how do you descend?
Kathy
Morning :-)
I caught your message with a PML search :-)
I'm interested in these COCKSHOTs ... do you know more about them ?
It mentions 4 sisters .. would you have their first names ?
TIA

Hi Jane,
My computer was down for a few days & I lost some of my recent e-mail. The
info you have from Kildwick, Yorkshire, England on Samuel & alice (Bobinson)
cockshott & their children. Was this data from the parish records of
Kildwick?
In going through my files I found an article from a 1980 Washington, OH
History book, page 83. Under a bio of Joseph Ballard who m. Alice Martha
Cockshott 9 Oct. 1845 in Belpre, Wash. Co., OH. Mentions that she was of
English descent & the youngest of 5 daughters. She was b. in America. They
first lived in NY where her father was a tavern owner. This article was
written by Catherine Manyon Nuckles Davis who was a gg granddaughter of
Joseph & Alice (Cockshott) Ballard & the article carries out her line. Can
send you a copy if interested.
