Morning Sheila,
You have the wrong address: the address below is only for subscribing
and unsubscribing.
You have to send an email to that address with the word
subscribe
in the body of the message and nothing else .. no subject line no
signature.
You are then subscribed :-)
Hope it works .. if not get back to me.
Cheers Jane

Evening Pat,
sorry .. bit behind with the mail :-) welcome to the list .. I'm
afraid not many people are interested :-) but that's not too bad ... I
mean .. if another person said they WERE interested in the London
COCKSHOTTS then you MUST be related :-)))))
When you have time can you send be what you have ? .. I have all of
the IGI records but haven't sorted them into families yet ... where
did the first William turn up ?
Cheers Jane

Hello to you all - I would be interested to know just how many people
are interested in this name!
I am Pam and Cockshott is my maiden name. Before he died, my father did
a great deal of work on the genealogy of our line, that is, the
Cockshotts of Bermondsey, Poplar and Greenwich. It starts with a William
Cockshott born circa 1735.
I am currently attempting to get it all properly entered on a database
which I can then share with anyone who is interested. This may take a
while as I don't have a lot of spare time at the moment, but if anyone
has any specific queries about this branch (whose major occupation was
as Thames Watermen and Lightermen), I would be happy to help.
Cheers, Pam
Thanks John, I know of the page .. there are an awful lot of mistakes
on it ..
I am working with the web site owner (Nic Wilson) sorting them all out
:-)
Cheers Jane

Convicts Transported to
Western Australia 1850-1868
COCKSHUTT; Henry sentenced to life 34 GIBRALTAR 1855 Firing at a
Corporal (Army?)
Ship .. Clara
This 708 ton ship was built in Sunderland in 1853. It was employed
twice as a convict transport for Western Australia and left London,
England on March 19, 1857 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried
the eighteenth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western
Australia. On this voyage the Clara took 106 days and arrived in
Fremantle on July 3, 1857 with 95 passengers and 262 convicts
[Erickson]. Henry Peachey was the captain of the vessel.
There were no deaths recorded on the convict shipping and description
lists and 262 convict numbers were assigned for the voyage ranging
from (4239 to 4500).
Of the 95 passengers mentioned, all 95 were pensioner guards and their
families, the number being made up of 29 pensioner guards, 23 wives,
21 sons and 22 daughters.
The following list is an alphabetically sorted list of the names
associated with each of the 262 convict numbers assigned to this
voyage. The comments field gives alternative names attributed to the
various convicts, many of which are not only spelling variations, but
alternative names used in later life or in subsequent re-convictions.
The age quoted seems to refer to the age of the convict when the
passenger list was created.

'The Seventeen Hundreds'
...When Mathew Wilson, the Master of Wortley Forge, died he left his
nephewJohn Cockshutt not only the Forges but part of the property at
Haigh Head.
This John Cockshutt was the son of the Reverend Thomas Cockshutt,
vicar of Cawthorne. The Reverand had married a local girl, Sussannah
Wilson and they came to live at Huthwaite Hall which son John
eventually inherited. Susannah was Mathew Wilson's sister- so as hed
had no heirs his estate passed to nephew John in 1739.
In 1739 the descendants of John Cockshutt and George Beaumont sold
their respective shares in the property to Jonas Clarke of Noblethorpe
Hall.'

Snippet number 5 from Ian Dewhirst's Gleanings from Victorian
England - photos of old costumes and clothes can be found at
http://costumes.org/pages/victlinks.htm
"Liggin here deead, i' thee shroud an' thee coffin,
Liggin alone in this poor wretched room, just thee white hands crossed
ower thee bosom,
Waiting for t'angels to carry thee home."
WHEN the West Riding poet, Bill o' th'Hoylus End, penned those lines,
he sketched, beyond the sentimentality, a stark picture of
mid-Victorian death in a working-class household.
The exigencies of such "poor wretched rooms", and the ultimate dread
of a pauper's grave - Bill o' th'Hoylus was narrowly to escape one
himself a quarter of a century later -prompted a custom whereby
mourners contributed towards the funeral expenses.
Someone would sit at the head of the coffin with a basin, into which
guests dropped their contributions - a shilling per person seems to
have been the traditional donation. They were then given glasses of
wine, sponge biscuits or "funeral fingers", sometimes slabs of cake.
In default of an organ, a person known as the "bawler" would lead the
singing; he wore a tub-hat and struck the note with a pitchfork.
Bearers would carry the coffin shoulder-high to the churchyard, the
mourners walking behind.
The funerals of the more well-to-do were not, of course, so simple;
for the Victorians were extremely funeral-conscious, and the higher up
the social scale the more elaborate they became.
When, late in 1854, a Keighley under- taker, James Aked, engaged
Messrs. Crabtree of Halifax, coach-builders, to paint and decorate his
hearse, he took pains to inform the public that "it is now equal in
appearance to any in the neighbouring towns, and calculated for the
most respectable funerals". It was, he added, an "excellent" hearse,
"with rich ostrich plumes".
Mr. Aked - who combined the business of linen-draper with that of
undertaker - also called attention to his stock of mourning goods, an
awe-inspiring catalogue: Crape collars, collarettes, chemizettes,
habit - shirts, &c". French merinos, Coburgh cloths, Orleans,
parramattas, henriettas, &c. Black silks, satins, satinettes, gro
royals, baratheas, &c.". There were mourning cap and bonnet ribbons,
neck- ties, black kid gloves, palls and hoods, "superior West of
England black cloths, kerseymeres, and cloths for ladies' cloaks,
capes, &c". prints and muslins, "Grant's patent and other crapes".
A funeral with such a hearse, and with mourners so attired, must have
been an impressive sight. Mutes were sometimes hired simply to stand
along the route, decked with crape. Coffin-bearers were customarily
presented with silk scarves.
Advertisements of the period evince this same funeral-consciousness.
W. Aslin, a hosiery dealer of Keighley High Street, chary of emulating
Mr. Aked's totality in the field, specialised in making mourning caps
to order. J. Cockshott's forte was gloves. Rebecca Buckley, a
grave-clothes maker, removing from Townfield Gate to Market Street in
1853, took the opportunity - rather undiplomatically - of "return- ing
thanks for the very liberal support with which she has been favoured".
There was a brisk trade in eatables. When Mrs. Shackleton " (late of
the Rodney Inn)" set up a confectionery business in New Bridge Street
in 1854, she sold "funeral biscuits, three rolls in a paper, 4d. per
paper"; two rolls in a paper, 3d. per paper. Her customers - poorer
households, we may imagine - were lent napkins and other requisites
free of charge.
Small living-rooms faced with a large influx of funeral guests
inevitably found themselves lacking much besides napkins. According to
Haworth tradition, the saying "to have all one's chairs at home"
derives from this context. Neighbours were habitually called upon to
lend their chairs to accommodate mourners; hence - reflecting true
Yorkshire canniness - the man with "all his chairs at home" had his
wits about him, had none of his chairs on loan to the bereaved.
Tradesmen like John Smith, of Low Street, Keighley, furnished funerals
with cakes, biscuits and wine; whilst John Farrar Pickles, Brewery
Houses, supplied temperance cordials. William Chatburn, who ran a
confectionery and bread- making business, boasted a slightly dubious
catch-phrase: "Bride Cakes and Funeral Biscuits on the shortest
Notice".
The nineteenth century was the age of the mourning card. Bereaved
relatives treasured these sad mementoes, with black- edged envelopes
to match, embossed with weeping willows, catafalques, sorrowing
angels, flowers, shattered columns. People made collections of them,
pasted them in albums. At Keighley you could even have your mourning
cards framed "after the French style" at T. Dineen's, stationer, No.
29, "near the gas lamp", Market Place.
