I descend from Elisha Henry Cockrell (1811-1900). He is buried in a small family cemetery near Cockrell's Crossroads in Nash County, NC
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=cockrell&GSbyrel=al... One of his sons is also buried there who died in the battle of Gettysburg July 15, 1863.
Last Winter I visited Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC and found some other ancestors. If you search for Cockrell in Nash Co. NC you can find many of them. Specifically, I found a marker for Pvt Josiah Jacob Cockrell and his wife Eliza Batchelor Cockrell

Cockrell researchers;
Hello. My name is Mike Clark.
My ancestor is a Phanuel Davis born in VA in 1785 or 1786 according to the 1850 and 1860 Jennings County, IN U.S. Census. Phanuel had a migration path from far SW VA before 1800 to Madison County, KY by 1805, to Clermont and Brown Counties in OH in about 1811, to Jennings County, IN in 1820. He was in Jennings County, IN from 1820 until his death there in 1864.
Although Phanuel carries the Davis surname, he carries the Y chromosome DNA of the Cockrell family settling in Prince William County, VA between 1735 and 1740, with possible oldest early settlers of Thomas and William. Although some researchers believe this is the family line of Thomas Cockrell who married Ann Ramey; I have doubts about that conclusion, based on DNA analysis.
Larry Cockerell is copied. He has done extensive DNA work at the FTDNA lab on differentiating between various Cockrell and Cottrell families. There are at least three haplogroups among these lines. I1, R1b, and I2; so not all Cockrells in America are related to each other in an American time frame. I have helped support Larry's project.
There was a living heir of Simon Peter Cockrell, baptist minister in Russell County, VA and later MO in the Roll Call. We do need a DNA sample of a living male heir of this line. Someone who has a straight string of Cockrell fathers from the heir living today back to Simon Peter. This probably means that the living heir carries the Cockrell surname still today.
We also have a living heir of the Presley Cockrell of KY in the project, which I believe connects to another roll call contributor.
If you can afford to do a 37, 67 or 111 marker test at FTDNA, it can eliminate your chasing the lines you don't belong to. It is better at eliminating dead ends, than it is at identifying a specific ancestor in a specific location or time frame. But the more DNA volunteers we get, the more we learn about the various branches of the Cockrell tree through the unique mutation patterns of each line.
Will stop there for now.

My earliest possible link is James Cockriel believed to be the son of Presley. James was born 1812 in VA and married Lucinda Stice. This part is still confusing. My great grandparents were Phillip W. Stice and Schrilda Cockrell who died in Texas County, MO. Because of other commitments, I have not added more to my research on this side of the family in several years.

Subject: Re: [COCKRELL] Listowner Post - ROLL CALL!!
My earliest proven COCKRELL ancestor is John Cockrell, born about 1756 in either North Carolina or Virginia. He married Nancy Anne Winstead, born about 1758 in Nash County, North Carolina. The two married about 1758 in Northumberland County, Virginia. I descend through their son Archibald Cockrell, born about 1795 in Nash County, North Carolina. "Baldy" (as he was called) Cockrell married Selah Pridgen, born about 1795 probably in Nash County, North Carolina. They married March 15, 1815 in Nash County, North Carolina. Their son, also named Archibald Cockerell, born December 24, 1824 near Atlanta, Georgia, and went my "Arch" Cockerell. Arch C. Cockerell added the extra "e" to the name, and my mother was convinced we are not related to any Cockerell unless they have that extra "e" in their name. Ha!
Arch Cockerell married Mary Minerva Hittson, born May 20, 1832 in Virginia. The couple married April 9, 1846 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. Her father, Alexander Hittson had already come to the Republic of Texas before statehood, so descendants of this couple are elgible for membership in the Sons or the Republic of Texas (SRT) and the DRT. Mary Minerva Hittson Cockerell had 12 children, who all lived to adulthood, and then she died September 4, 1875 in Van Zandt County, Texas. She is buried in the Kemp, Kaufman County, Texas Beard Cemetery.
On July 9, 1878, Arch Cockerell married Van Burena "Vannie" Rush, who was born December 27, 1878 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. Vannie Rush Cockerell's parents, Major James Martin Rush and his second wife Tennessee Blair are my SRT ancestors, since Arch and Vannie Cockerell's son Lonnie Lee Cockerell was my grandfather. His daughter, Melba Dal Cockerell, was my mother.
Hope this helps someone!

My Cottrell/Cockrell line:
I use both surnames because, although my name is Cottrell and I have searched that family for many years, I found out through DNA testing a few years ago that I have been searching the wrong family. My name should be Cockrell, not Cottrell. They are two separate families.
I have a 23 out of 25 match with several people on the Cockrell DNA heritage site and none on the Cottrell site. Even with this new information, I have been unable to connect my Cottrell with any of the Cockrells that I am supposed to be related to!
My 23 out of 25 DNA markers are with descendants of:
Moses Cockrell, Fairfield Co. SC
Thomas Cockrell, New Kent Co. VA
John Cockrell, Nashville, TN
Presley Cockerall, Warren Co. KY*
Jacob Cockrell, Nash Co. NC
*This is Thomas Cockrell’s ancestor and we have corresponded, but have not found any links.
My earliest ancestor that I have proof of is:
First Generation:
Presley Cottrell who was born about 1795 in either VA or TN.
He married Martha (Patsy) Hicks in Laurel Co. KY in 1832.
Martha was a widow of Allen Hicks (I have never found the marriage record) and she had several children when she married Presley.
Second Generation:
George Washington Cottrell, b 1833 Laurel Co. KY. He married Nancy Hornsby in 1854, Clay Co. KY. She died by 1872 and he then married Winnie Reid. He had seven children with Nancy and ten with Winnie. He was a Union Soldier and received a pension.
Third Generation:

There were several men with the name Presley Cottrell/Cockrell (various spellings) in KY, VA and TN during this time period, 1795-1860. I have traced all of them and have records if anyone is interested. There is a possibility (slim) that these people could be the same person.
I would appreciate any help!
