Joyce,
Thank you. You are great to help.
I understand that this material attempts Thomas Cockerill (who died in Loudoun County in 1777) as the son John Cockerill baptized October 22, 1669 as the son of John Cockrell and Elizabeth Presley Saunders.
I see that Thomas names a son John in that will
I see that the tree that you mention in Jim Burgess' book does not contain any information about John's life after that point.
These are the topics I am attempting to investigate, but there is no sourcing of this material to use as proof.
Here are some considerations that I hope you and others can weigh in on.
The Thomas Cockrell baptized on 10/22/1699 in Northumberland County, VA is noted in that record as a son of John, but the mother's name is not mentioned.
A John Cockrell also has a son Peter baptized on 03/13/1700.
Assuming that these two boys were baptized close to their birth, then these two births are only five months apart, and must be from different mothers
Elizabeth (Presly) Saunders Cockrell wife of John Gen 3a Cockrell mentions a deceased son Peter in her 1719 will. This John Gen 3a is the son John Cockrell Gen 2 and his wife Hannah. This is the John that entered into the indenture with Edward Coles.
This tell me that Thomas is the son of a different John. Namely John Gen 3b Cottrell, son of Andrew Gen 2 Cottrell and his wife Angel (Corbel) Cottrell Lamprey.
So, I respectfully challenge who the Thomas, baptized in 1699, descends from.
Second, I also challenge where this 1699 Gen 4 Thomas migrated to.
He might have migrated to Fairfax County, which later split into Loudoun County as well.
He might also have migrated to Prince William County, where Thomas and Deborah divided their estate in 1754 and 1755.
I do believe that both of these Thomas' might have descended from a John. The question is which one.
To make things more complex. There was a Thomas Cockrell in Northumberland County in 1650. There is mention that he might have had a son Thomas and a son John. Since Westmoreland County was split off from Northumberland County just three years later in 1653, Loudoun County Thomas might easily have descended from this line.
Now... I admit that I don't have any more documents to back up these alternatives.
But... DNA may help us out.
In Jim Burgess earlier DNA project, there was allegedly an heir of Thomas Cockrell of Loudoun County, VA who haplotype was I2b. We can not find that donor today
Work we have recently complete on the Prince William County Thomas clearly seems to indicate haplotype I1
If we can find a living Cockrell male heir of Loudoun County Thomas, and he is I2b, it may help us in our pursuit of documents
There were three Cockrells and Cottrells in Northumberland County (NUCOVA) in the 1650's, with others probably living in other locations. NUCOVA had Thomas and John Cockrell and Andrew Cottrell.
There are two major and two minor DNA haplotypes running around today.
I1 is the haplotype for the majority of the Cockrell FTDNA project donors
R1b1b2 is the haplotype for the majority of the Cottrell FTDNA project donors
I2b is out there for one Cockrell, and R1a1 are also out there for one Cottell.
Joyce. Can you help us find a living Cockrell male heir of the Thomas Cockrell if Loudoun County Virginia?
Thanks for listening.

Some of the information of the Cockerills was from A Brief Record of the
Cockerill Family 1637-1922 published by The Cockerill Reunion Association . Mary
Almeda Cockerill had the Cockerill History publish . She was from Fayette
COunty , OHio and died in Lincoln Nebraska on April 17,1933. SHe was a professor
at a College etc. One of my Childen's aunts gave me a copy of the search done by
their Mother which was taken from this booklet and later they added more
information of the later Cockerills of Fayette OCunty in the 1960's.
In this booklet it was stated Thomas ssold his Westmoreland County land in 1748
and moved to the part of Fairfax Xounty which in 1757 was formed into the
Lunndoum COunty. The records show he acquired land ther ein 1752. His will was
dated June 17,m1777 and was recorded in Loudham County Sept 8 1777., his sons
Jeremiah and Sandford being the executors.
More info in book on this.
Also you can look at Jim Burgess web page on the Cockerill.

I am sure of the information is correct starting with Thomas Cockerill and
Amelia Lucas Cockerll.

Subject: Re: [COCKRELL] COCKRELL Digest, Vol 4, Issue 3
Joyce,
Thank you for responding.
There was a John Cockrell who was born in 1669 who married an Elizabeth
(Presly)
Saunders before 1696. Let's call him John Gen 3a
There was an entirely different John Cottrell who was born before 1674
who
married first to a Lucretia Neale, and later to an Elizabeth xxxxx.
Let's call
him John Gen 3b
We don't have a marriage record for either, but birth records for
children and
deeds and wills/probates paint a fairly complete picture of these two
men.
John Gen 3a descends from John Gen 2 Cockrell and Hannah xxxxx
(possibly Coles).
John Gen 2 is the person who entered into an indenture with Edward
Coles in
1650.
John Gen 3b descends from Andrew Cottrell and Angel xxxxx (possibly
Lamprey).
John Gen 3a and John Gen 3b may not be related at all. I just use Gen 2
and Gen
3 for differentiation.
Working forward in time:
I believe that Thomas born 1699 was the son of John Gen 3b. The
Cottrell line.
This birth is in the Northumberland County, VA St. Stephens parish
records as a
"John born to a John". Since no mother is noted in the birth record
it is
harder. But I do believe Thomas birth belongs to John Gen 3b, as John
Gen 3a
was having a son Peter in 1699, and the timing is too close for one of
these two
wives to have had both sons.
It is at this point where the proof I have seen to date drops off a lot.
FIRST: I am not sure that Thomas born in 1699 to John Cottrell is the
same
person who marries Ann Ramey/Remey/Remy.
SECOND: I have not seen any proof supporting John "Sr". as the son of
Thomas
and Ann.
THIRD: I have not seen any proof supporting John Sr. as the father of
Simon
Peter with Susan, or the father of John Jr. through John Sr's second
marriage to
Barbara
All of this may be right. But, can you provide me with the documentary
proof
that you rely on to believe these three facts?
Does Thomas or Anna's Loudoun County, VA wills mention this exact John
Sr. or
Simon Peter or John Jr.?
Jeremiah is new to the mix for me. Does his genealogical proof as John
Sr.'s
brother help us with John Sr. himself?
Just to offer a counterpoint for everyone to also shoot at.
How do we know that Thomas Cottrell (Cockrell) marrying Deborah about
172x, and
dying in Prince William County, VA in 1755 isn't the son Thomas born in
1699 to
John Cottrell Gen 3b?
He has the right name and age.
I can't prove this either to be frank.
My point is that Isabel Gough and others have openly expressed
confusion among
about 6 different Thomas Cockrells and Cottrells in pre 1750 VA, many
with
Northumberland County, VA origiins.
I am just trying to sort through all of them as carefully as possible.
They
might descend from Thomas Cockrell Gen. 2, John Cockrell Gen 2, or
Andrew
Cottrell Gen 2, or someone else entirely.
Thanks for responding.
Mike

If Lyttleton, then you most likely descend from
Gen 5: Littleton Cockrell born in 1760
Gen 4: John Cockrell born in 1715
Gen 3. Richard Cockrell born in 1683
Gen 2: John Cockrell, unsure of birth year, but entered into a 13 year
indenture in Northumberland County, VA in 1650
Gen 1: John Cockrell, listed as "coachman, late of London, deceased"
in his son
John's 1650 indenture

Yes, that is the family. Can you tell me more about gen1 and gen 2.
I am away from home so had the date mixed up.

Hello to fellow Cockrell researchers.
This is my first time participating in the Cockrell forum at Rootsweb. Please educate me if I need to conform to any protocols that I was not aware of in the message below.
I see several references on line to a John Cockrell, (Sr) born in the 1720's or 1730's in VA.
He is sometimes referenced as a planter from Richmond (?County and not city?) VA, and is sometimes referenced as having served with Henry Harrison about 1756.
There appear to be several early Cockrell and Cottrell lines in the Northern Neck of VA, including Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond and Westmoreland Counties. These lines appear to leave the Neck after 1700 and migrate to other counties farther west in VA.
Some sites place John Sr. as having married first to a Susan Tarpley (Trapley, Tarpnell, etc.); then having widowed and married again to a Thebie Fox.
There is also on-line mention of him having the following potential children:
Marriage #1: Simon Peter, Moses and Susan
Marriage #2: John Jr.
In 1754, Simon Peter (Tarpley) Cottrell inherits land from a Thomas Cottrell (Cockrell) in the estate of Thomas and Deborah Cottrell in Prince William County, VA. This Simon Peter is noted in the margins as a son of Thomas, but is more likely a grandson. The deed itself does not call him a son, only the clerk's margin notes.
The 1754 deed of gifts for Thomas and Deborah do not mention a son John (Sr.) , through which Simon Peter could be a grandson of Thomas.
This Simon Peter later sells his land back to Peter Cottrell of Prince William County, VA in the 1790's. This Peter is a son of the Thomas and Deborah deeding the land to Simon Peter in 1754. This makes Peter an uncle to Simon Peter.
Some sources have investigated whether John Cockrill Jr. of Nashville TN was a son of John Sr. The brief autobiography and the obituary of John Jr. do not name his father, but the obituary does state that he was born in 1757, and raised near Winchester, VA; which is in Frederick County. This John Jr. would not have been born yet at the time of the 1754 deeds of gifts for Thomas and Deborah. John Jr. states that his father died when John Jr. was young and he was apprenticed out to a blacksmith. John Jr's mother appears to have survived, remarried and possibly also died in the TN area.
It should also be noted that Thomas and Deborah also deeded Frederick County, VA land to their daughter Molley in 1754, indicating that they held land in both Prince William County, VA where they resided and in Frederick County, VA where it is possible that some their children resided.
It should also be noted that Thomas and Deborah deeded land in 1754 to a Moses Cockrell, whose relationship is not provided, but who also may have been a son of Thomas and Deborah. When Simon Peter married, he named his oldest child Moses. It is this Moses Davis, son of Simon Peter, who had the encounter with an Indian ambush in the 1790's in far SW VA.
DNA results for a living heir of John Jr. of TN and a living heir of a Moses Cockrell of SC match at 66 of 67 markers. This may indicate that this Moses Cockrell of SC might have been the son of Thomas and Deborah of Prince William County, VA.
DNA results for a living heir of John Jr. of TN match at 37 of 37 markers to a living heir of Phanuel Davis. Phanuel Davis' parents are not known. Phanuel was born in 1785 in VA, with some oral tradition placing his birth, or youth as in Wythe County, VA. It is not yet known how a Davis male ended up with Cockrell/Cottrell DNA. I descend from Phanuel Davis.
Can anyone offer documented contemporaneous proof for?:
The place of residence of John Sr. from 1740 to 1760
The first marriage of John Sr. to Susan Tarpley(?sp)
The second marriage of John Sr. to Thebie Fox
Any births of children of John Sr.
An estate or probate for John Sr. that names his children
Thank you in advance for your help.
Mike Clark
Hi Mike, thanks for the Cockrell info. I printed it out and will see if any of my people fit it. I am always hoping!
