Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Jim,
I have appreciated so very much your involvement in researching and writing
about our Cockrell/Cockrill families. However, I just want you to know
that I haven't volunteered for two reasons: I am 77 years old and on
oxygen, and I also have a file cabinet of folders on my family lines. It seems I
never have time to work on them anymore. Whatever happened to retiring
and having nothing to do???
I have not lived among the old Cockrill homesteads for research , nor have
I ever lived among Cockrill relatives to pick their brains (except my
grandmother when I was a child). It makes researching that much more difficult
-- certainly the reason I prize so much what you have done.
Best of luck in finding the perfect person to whom you will pass the
torch. I think Kay would be a good choice.

Jim, I am so sorry to learn that you are ready to pass on the "keys";
however, having turned 65 last December, I certainly understand. I think
many of us who are in the so called "Golden Years" are looking for younger
family researchers in hopes of being able to entrust the fruits of our many
hours of research so it will hopefully continue on and not be lost to future
generations.
Let me express my deepest gratitude for your dedication and hard work in
bringing these many Cockrell families and researchers together! My very
best wishes to you and your family!

As I am getting older I would like to pass these notes to someone who can be

Hi Jim
I'm sad that you are stepping down from doing the Cockrell web and research. You have been very helpful to me, ever since I discovered I am a Cockrell instead of a Cottrell! My search is ongoing and I hope whoever takes your job will keep us the good work.
Thanks again for all of your help!

Jim,
I understand your position. Researchers of your caliber don't come along
that often and whom ever takes these files over will have quite the shoes to
fill. I have Cockrell on both my mother's and father's side. I continue to
be active in genealogy, but have not revisited the Cockrell line in some
time. I suspect I will continue doing genealogy well after I retire (10
plus years) God willing.
I believe Kay is an excellent choice even though she too may not be active.
If you are making a list of possible recipients, I am willing to keep the
files, but I have little knowledge beyond my own lines.

Kay- this is an aside.? You are definitely NOT old!? Hopefully, we will have the archives here in Austin back by the time you retire!? It has been over 4 years since I moved to Austin and we still haven't had that "coffee break." Still want to one of these days.?

Jim,
I'm out here lurking. I, too, worry about who might take over the research
of those of us who have invested so much time and energy in the Cockrell
family research. Right now, I am trying to get all of my bills, including
my mortgage paid off, so that I can retire in five or six years. I hope, at
that time, to be able to devote the majority of my time to my genealogy. I
am getting older, also. I will be 63 in July but I am in very good health.
I don't know if you think that I am getting too old, or if it will be too
many years before I am able to devote a majority of my time to the Cockrell
family again. Let me know. My feelings will not be hurt whatever you
decide.

I have 40 or so files full of information on every line. I cannot afford to
make copies for everyone. There is a lot of information.

Hope this makes sense.

Subject: [COCKRELL] Jim Burgess - Cockrill Notes - Cockrill Families of
Northern Virginia
Dear Cockrill Cousins,
Ever since we published Cockrill Families of Northern Virginia I have seen
very few emails on the Cockrill Cockrell family.
I have a box that is full of my Cockrill family notes. Several file
folders.
As I am getting older I would like to pass these notes to someone who can be
what I call the "keeper of the keys" for the Cockrell families.
It would be my hope that this person would do look ups for others and share
what I have.
I want to be really sure that some one who is committed to the Cockrill
family receives these notes. They represent many years of research.
Kay - If you are out there please send me a private email.
Any discussion?
Thanks
Jim Burgess

I agree that these files should be retained by someone willing to both honor Jim's work and share with other family researchers. I have some family researchers (other branches) who are certainly willing to accept info, but not willing to share - and that would be a travesty here. As my Cockrells (probably a different, Maryland, branch) are 5 generations back for me. I do not think I would be an appropriate person to keep the keys - but I do want to see them kept, and well. I think it needs to, ideally, be someone with the Cockrill/Cockrell surname, or who is only one or two generations removed, so the connection is still very strong. That's my personal opinion, anyway. Thanks for all you have done, Jim!
