Has anyone ever gotten a confirmed history of the Cockrell name? I've seen
Scottish, Irish, French and Viking roots. I consider myself Irish as my
earliest ancestors claim to come from there. What's the general consensus about
what specific nationality the Cockrell name belongs to?
Thanks,
John Cockrell

Does anyone have this man listed in your research? I have confirmed that he indeed married my husband's gr-aunt, Clara Belle Risinger, daughter of John Roston Risinger and Polly Gunter.
According to the 1900 Lexington Co., SC, Chinquepin census, Crumwell was the son of Griffin Cockrel and Laura ?. He had siblings Eva, Jason, Thomas, Albert and Gorden. According to the 1910 census, he was not living with his parents, but also had siblings Lena, Clay, Lucy, Sidney and Ransom. In 1910, Thomas had married, was listed as a head of household, widower, and was living with his brother Albert C. Cockrell. Gordon was living with his parents. However, Crumwell is not to be found. He married my husband's gr-aunt around 1915 and is listed with her in the 1920 Saluda Co., SC census. I also have a copy of his WWI Draft Registration (dated 6-5-1917) which states that he was born 1-10-1888 in Batesburg, Lexington Co., SC. In the 1930 Lexington Co., Batesburg, SC census, he is listed with his wife, Belle, and children Grace, Margaret and Cromwell, Jr. Cromwell W. Cockrell, Jr. was born 1924 and died 12-18-1949 in Edgefield Co., SC.
Does anyone know this family? I'm looking for all of the children of Crumwell and Belle Risinger Cockrell.
THANKS!
-Dana

I noticed you have Risinger listed in your surnames. I'm looking for my husband's gr-aunt, Clara Belle Risinger (bc. 1891). She was living with her parents (John Roston Risinger and Polly Gunter) in the 1910 Lexington County - Chinquepin Township, but not in 1920. My father-in-law thinks his aunt married a Cockrell. In the 1930 Lexington Co., SC - Batesburg census, I found a Cromwell W. Cockrell with a wife named Bell H. He was a merchant in his own store.
Does this sound familiar to you?

The names in this Cockrell family match alot of the names in my line. Do you know if this Jeremiah D. Cockrell is the same who married Jane C. (?), had three boys in Kentucky. D. Cockrell and his 18 yr. old son, Jeremiah were in Memphis TN this according to the 1850 census. Jane C and two of the boys (T.E.S. Thomes and R.H.M. Richard) were still in Kentucky at the time of the 1850 census. Everyone was together in the 1860 Census in Memphis TN and the Owner of the Gayoso House. Later in the 1870 census D. Cockrell was part owner of the Peabody Hotel. Wondering if the families are one in the same. Please email me or post a reply I am extremely curious and want to confirm some old family stories.
