Read your post on Simon Cockrell and Hester Phipps. My grandfather, Henry Clay Cockrell (b.1860-69 in Kentucky, d. 1920 in Texas) may be related to Simon. I read an obit on Stella, daughter of Simon, who was born in Lampasas, Texas, same county of residence as my grandfather. Appreciate any information and will share what I have.

Seeking information on the wife of Simon Cockrell, Mary (Polly) Smith, born 1795, died 1855, Who were her brothers and sisters, if any, and her parents? They raised a large family in Breathitt County, Kentucky, and were among the areas eariest settlers. Simon was born in Virginia in about 1775 and died in Ky in 1856.
I just finished looking through Tom Cockerel's web page and gravitated to the KY Cockrells and then to Fayette County in KY. I saw he focused on the census records, and thought others may benefit from the tax records I looked up several years ago. It places the Cockrell line in Fayette County, Kentucky about 1796. I am a descendant of the James Cockrell that first shows up in 1807. In the 1810 census, James is shown listed with his mother, who would appear to be Susannah Cockrell.
Susannah Cockrell is believed to be the Susannah Stark that married Christopher Cockrell in Virginia. Records indicate that Christopher's estate was settled in October 1796 in Loudoun County, VA. Other children of Christopher include: Joseph, Sampson, Susannah, John S., Jean, Benjamin, Margery, Henry and S. Starks.
Are there any Cockrell descendants out there that fall under this line? I would love to see a male Cockrell from this line submit his DNA to the Cockrell project.

I'm interested in Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cockrell, b: abt 1857, who married Adrian Miles; her father was George W., b: abt 1827, and her mother was Elizabeth J., b: abt 1823, both in Indiana. George & Elizabeth had 1 daughter in Illinois, then 2 sons & 2 daughters in Missouri. If these are some of yours, would you know when and where Lizzie married Adrian Miles. I lost them between 1880 and 1900. Thank you for any information you may offer.
Responding to Tom's Roll Call. My descendant is John Cockrill, born 19
Dec 1757, near Winchester, Virginia, where he grew up to manhood. During
John Cockrill's youth, Winchester, Virginia was on the western frontier.
It was a difficult place to live, particularly during the French-Indian
War (1754-1766). Indian raids on isolated farms were so common as to
result in Ft. Loudon being constructed in the town in 1755.
His father and stepfather being dead and the family being very poor, his
mother bound him to a blacksmith in 1774, when he was 17 years old. He
was drafted twice by the Virginia Militia during the time he was bound
to the blacksmith, once in 1776 in response to a Cherokee Indian raid at
Wautauga, North Carolina. When he finished his obligations to the
blacksmith and the Virginia Militia, he returned to the Wautauga area
where he joined the Donelson Flotilla. It reached what is now know as
Nashville, Tennessee in 1780.
John Cockrill's descendants are nicely summarized in “Cockrill
Genealogy” compiled by Granville Goodloe in the American Historical
Magazine, Vol. III October 1898, No. 4. Jim Burgess has a more
up-to-date listing in his awesome “Cockrill Families of Northern
Virginia,” James A Burgess, 2002.
I have no documentation as to who John Cockrill's progenitors were,
although a number of plausible calculations have been made.
My particular branch of the family are the Cockrills who left Tennessee
for Arkansas, after the Civil War (Sterling Robertson Cockrill.) Most
are still in Arkansas..
