Yorkshire back again, I would like to contact the researcher who is connected to
Thomas Cockerill, Loudoun/Fairfax County, VA
as their DNA matches mine.
Peter Cockerill
Yorkshire calling, Thank you Rosemary and Tom, for explaining your lines, both very interesting. The only problem I had was the abbreviations you use? I presume they stand for County's/States? In the UK we have a system called the Chapman codes where three letters stand for county's, e.g.: Yorkshire =YKS.
I presume you have a similar code? could anyone supply me with a copy please.
Rosemary you state that Moses Cockrell b. (born) ca. (?) 1725, does it mean circa (about)?
I have just received a letter from Tim Cockerill and he is pleased with the DNA results, and thanks you for the possible lead (John Cockerill, St Benet, Pauls Wharfe,)
If anyone would like a copy of Tims or my family tree, e mail me and will send you copy's. I have a rule I do not send out information on any living person except there name, the data protection laws in England are very strict, It is the same with the data base, the majority of the records are before 1900.
I can send the trees out in file format's?
Family Tree Maker up to version 11
Gedcom,
PAF5
Excel, & Word,
Also I am not sure if Jim Burgess passed on the Excel file I did on Cockerill DNA if you want a copy let me Know.
I have a few ideas on the DNA projects, I will put them down on paper so we can have a discussion?

Good Morning,
Let's do a little roll call. For those that may not have participated before
we post a short document stating your family line.
Example:
My earliest known ancestor is Presley Cockerall found in the 1820 Waren County
census. We know that the family was located in the Anna, Ivy Creek, sectionof
Warren Co. He had four sons and two daughters. Presley is not found in any
other census records but records of one son, John, states that they moved from
Wythe Co., Va. about 1815.
John and his siblings remained in the Warren, Edmonson, Grayson counties of
Kentucky and Spencer and Warrick counties of Indiana. About 1856 the eldest
son and family moved to the Cass, Platte counties of Missouri. This family is
somewhat easy to trace through census records and some courthouse document.
Most of the counties were burned during the civil war. Many documents were
lost.
My DNA matches exactly on two participants at 25 points. It also matchs two
other family groups at 12 markers.
Thanks for reading this post.

In answer to Tom's Roll Call, my descendant is Moses COCKRELL b. ca. 1725 in Westmoreland, VA. He died Oct. 19, 1798. His Will is recorded in the Old Will Book 2, Page 191, File 2, of Fairfield Co. S.C.. Moses COCKRELL names the following children: Mary Ann COCKRELL, wife of Willian NOLAND; Jeremiah COCKRELL - wife Jeremiah Elizabeth RODEN; Nathaniel COCKRELL, wife Rebecca HARRISON, Sarah COCKRELL wife of Andrew MARTIN; and Liah COCKRELL wife of Robert NEEL. From the 1790 Census records we can conclude that apparently there were other children, possibly 2 males and 1 female who died before Moses and who have not been identified. Moses COCKRELL married Jane YOUNG/YOUNGE, the daughter of John YOUNG and wife Mary. Moses COCKRELL is mentioned in the Will of John YOUNG dated 1786 as his "son-in-law who married daughter, Jennet".
Research shows the following COCKRELL/COCKRAL families living in Fairfield Co., SC:
1790 Census Fairfield Co., Camden District, SC
Moses COCKRELL 1 adult male, 3 males under 16; 5 females (p. 7 Ancestry p. 160 Census)
Jeremiah COCKRELL 1 adult; 1 male under 16; 1 female (p. 7 Ancestry p. 160 Census)
Thomas COCKRAL 1 adult; 1 male under 16; 2 females ( p. 11 Ancestry p. 167 Census)
I might also note that in the 1790 Census we also find:
Burr HARRISON 2 adults; 1 male under 16; 2 females; 9 slaves ( p. 11 Ancestry, p. 167 Census) Burr HARRISON witnesses the Will of Moses COCKRELL. Rebecca HARRISON, daughter of Burr HARRISON, married Nathaniel COCKRELL.
There has been much discussion as to the father of my Moses COCKRELL; however, the father of Moses COCKRELL is unproven. Jack Olsen and Velma J. HALL have suggested that Moses is the son of Thomas COCKRELL and Elizabeth RAMEY, however, Moses COCKRELL, althought living at the time, is not mentioned in the Will of Thomas COCKRELL which was signed 17th day of Jan. 1777 and proven in Loudoun Co. in 1778 so I must assume that this Thomas is not the father of Moses COCKRELL.
As to the migration of the children of Moses COCKRELL and Jane YOUNG/YOUNG we find the following:
The family of Mary Ann COCKRELL and William NOLAND were in Kentucky by 1829.
The family of Jeremiah COCKRELL and Jemimah Elizabeth RHODEN are found in Carter Co. and Montgomery Co., KY,; Memphis, TN and Texas
The family of Nathaniel COCKRELL and Rebecca HARRISON are found in Chester Co., SC, Noxubee CO., MS and Texas
Nothing is known on the families of Sarah COCKRELL MARTIN or Liah COCKRELL NEEL.
DNA results show that Moses COCKRELL matches exactly on 12 markers the samples submitted for the families of (1) William Haywood COCKRELL of Nash Co., NC (2) John COCKRILL of Nashville, TN; (3) Thomas COCKRELL of New Kent Co., VA; (4) Presley COCKERALL of Warren Co., KY and (5) the COCKERELL family which was submitted to Larry COCKERELL's DNA study.
My line descends from Nathaniel COCKRELL and wife, Rebecca HARRISON.

Dear Cockrill researchers
As Jim Burgess has passed on my email regarding UK/USA DNA connections you will know who I am.
My fellow DNA contributor Tim Cockerill unfortunately has no computer so communication is a little slow.
Tim Cockerill's line goes back to Wolverhampton where they moved to in the 1780's but he has been stuck for 20 years trying to find were the family moved from.
because your DNA matches his, the John Cockrell of St Benets, could give him a lead.
My Side Go back in Hackness (North Yorkshire) to when the parish register started 1567, there were three separate Cockerill's (all various spellings) families right from the start.
I run my own Engineering business and Family History is a hobby so my time is limited so please be patient If I cannot reply straight away
Looking forwards to our joint research
Peter Cockerill
Yorkshire, England
Ps I tried to send an attached file, but I found this does not work. so below is a copy of the file:-
Cockerill One Name Study,
In August 2001 after 25 years of researching Cockerill's I decided to take the plunge and join the Guild of one named studies. It has been very rewarding I was introduced to a multy database program 'Custodian II'.
All my separate Excel files are now in one big index which is growing daily.
Many Cockerill researchers have been in contact and we are sharing information and connecting up family trees.
I am in the process of inputting the Cockerills on the 1881 census and also collecting all the Cockerill's in the Public Record Office, Birth, Marriage and Deaths (using Free BMD on line) 1837 onwards.
The 1881 census, if I input 7 individuals a night it will take me 1 Year to complete.
To date the Index stands at 21,000. Cockerills mainly from the UK.
My family originate from Hackness, North Yorkshire in the 1540's -1670's. In the 1670's they
moved to Fylingdales and Robin Hoods Bay. Relatives are
still to be found there today. They were farmers, seamen and ship builders.
Robin Hoods Bay was an isolated seafaring community historically known for its
smugglers. It is about 6 miles south from Whitby.
I believe that because they were seamen/fishermen the Cockerills moved around the coastline. It is well recorded that some Yorkshire fishermen stayed 6 months of the year in Yarmouth when following the herring run.
Until recently I had only two references to Cockerill's in 12th and 13th centuries, This suggested there was two early families starting in Yorkshire and Suffolk.
But Bill and Elma researching Cockrell's in Wiltshire area have references to another. This puts another slant to the overall picture, Will wait before making any conclusions there could be many more early references which turn up in the future?
The earliest Cockerills found so far: -
Stephn cokerel 1166 pipe roll's Yorkshire.
Adam Cockerell 1200 pipe roll's Suffolk.
J. Cockerel 1262 Wiltshire Inquisitions and Post Mortem Vol 2.
( Chan. Inq. Pm., 47 Henry III, No 23. )
There seemed to be five main family area groups.
1. North Riding Yorkshire, Centred around Hackness (Cockerill's 1567 onwards), and then spreading out over Yorkshire.
2. Lancashire, centred around Haslingden and Rossendale, and spreading out over Lancashire
3. Norfolk and Suffolk, research is limited here.
4. London, research is limited here.
5. Wiltshire, around Salisbury Plane.
I thought there would only be a few Cockerills when I started but I was wrong there are thousands.
In the 1871 Census, there are 675 Cockerill's in England, Wales, Chanel Islands & Isle of Man, (July 04Only partially done)
Cockerill 263
Cockerell 175
Cockrill 103
Cockrell 123
Cockerall 2
Cockarell 0
Cockarill 0
Cockeral 4
Cockerville 0
Cockurell 0
Cocquerell 0
Cocrell 0
Crockerill 0
In the 1881 census, there are 2482 Cockerill's in the UK.
The main spellings:
Cockeral
Cockerall
Cockerill
Cockerell
Cockarill
Cockrill
Cockrell
Crockerill
Cockerville
Cockurell
Cocquerell
Cocrell
Cotterill ?
Cottrell ?
Cockerhill ?
In 1891 Census for England, Wales, there are 2961 Cockerill's ( Number is likely to change 15/7/04)
Cockerill 1580
Cockerell 499
Cockrell 325
Cockrill 302
Cockerall 5
Cockarell 2
Cockarill 0
Cockeral 0
Cockerville 0
Cockurell 0
Cocquerell 0
Cocrell 0
Crockerill 0
In 1901 Census there are 2790, (the Index is not reliable and numbers likely to change)
I am currently stuck with conflicting information on:
Elizabeth "Betsy" Cockrell, daughter of John Rice and Janet Cockerell. I am trying to load data into my PAF program but neet to iron out conflicting data first.
In an email I have from Earl Lullof dtd 13 Jul 1998 he cites data from Sandy Morrison in Oklahoma City, OK and Phyllis Dixon, in Fulton, Mo. wherein they provide birth, death, marriage etc. data on Elizabeth "Betsy" Cockerell. This data conflicts with data provided by Nancy Swindle and Beverly Bruner.
If you are still active in genealogy, I would like to hear from Sandy Morrison, Phyllis Dixon, Nancy Swindle and Beverly Bruner. Or if anyone else had referenced data on Elizabeth "Betsy" Cockerell I would like to hear from them also. Thanks.....good hunting to all.

Subject: Re Cockerill DNA
Dear Jim
Thank you for your reply and chapter 4, it is very interesting, you have
done allot of research. I can appreciate the time it has taken you, but
don't get disheartened.
Well after getting your e mail I found another Cockerell DNA Project on
Family Tree DNA run by Larry Cockerell. his DNA line matches your main
group.
Tonight I received my fellow researcher Tim Cockerill ( Wolverhampton UK
back to 1760s) DNA and decided to put all the Cockerill DNA results on to an
Excel spreadsheet,(see attachment) and found that our samples were not in
the same order as yours and low and behold? I could not believe it. My DNA
did match up to one set and Tim's matches up to the other, apart from a
couple of miss matches! So one branch of the USA Cockrill's is connected to
my Hackness, Yorkshire, UK Cockerill's and the other to Tim's Wolverhampton,
UK, Cockerill's unfortunately he has been stuck in 1760 cannot find where
there moved from, but your lead to John Cockerill Coachman (b c1634) St
Benets, Pauls Wharf, could be a lead for him?
Is it possible to get copies of the family tree's of the DNA contributors?
Is it your side that is connected to my lot?
Hope this has given you renewed enthusiasm?
Looking forward to your reply
Best wishes
Peter Cockerill

I want to thank everyone who has helped me to find this elusive Cockrell
family.
Here is what I have found from all the information I have gleaned from your
information. Hopefully, I will be able to find more info soon, right now I am
at a dead end. I found the Cockrell with the given names in the subject
heading. I cannot find his family after 1870. There is an Elizabeth Evans living
in ever census with Henry-Mack, Mac C. Cockrell. Also, I am wondering if his
name may be Henry Macklin C. Cockrell.
I appreciate the effort of all who have helped me. If any of these
individuals match your files, I would appreciate any information. I am working on the
George Cockrell theory in Simpson Co., MS, too.
Thank you all so much.
