Kay,
In my files, I located the Will of Thomas COCKERILL (I believe Jack Olsen
sent this to me) who is susposedly the spouse of Elizabeth Ann Ramey.
There is no mention of my Moses COCKRELL b. 1725 who died October 19, 1798
in White Oaks, Fairfield Co., So. Carolina. It has been a puzzle to me as
to why there was no mention of Moses if Thomas was indeed his father
especially since Moses was alive at the time of Thomas's death and did not
die until 21 years after this Thomas.
Will of Thomas Cockerill
In the name of God Amen, I Thomas COCKERILL of Loudoun County and Cameron
Parish being in good health and sound memory, but calling to mind the
uncertainty of this transitory life knowning it is difficult for all men

make this my last will and testament in manner and form following
principally I give my soul to Almighty God who gave it meaning he will
receive it though the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ and my body to
the earth to be buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter
mentioned. First my will and desire is that my executors do sell as much
of my stock and house hold furniture as will pay my just debts and that they
do not sell any of my slaves for that purpose.

Item: I give to my daughter Elizabeth TRIPLETT one shilling sterling and no

equal as possibly can be. I give to mysons Jeremiah, Sanford, Tomas and
Benjamin all the rest of my estate that is not already to be equally divided
between them and their heirs forever.
Lastly I nominate and appoint my sons Jeremiah and Sanford my Executors of

Also it is my will and desire that my friend BURR HARRISON should act to
settle all my accounts and determine all disputes that may arise from this
my last will.

It seems to me that we need to make some working hypotheses of how these men
might be related that we can in turn then research to prove or disprove, as
the case may be. At this point, we have the following people testing as
exact matches. My question to Jim Burgess to begin with is, does this say
they were brothers or does it say what generation they are all removed from
the common ancestor? I think it would help if I knew that this meant they
all had a common ancestor 5 generations back or 10 or whatever the case
might be.
1. Moses Cockrell, b. ca. 1725 in Westmoreland Co, VA, d. 19 Oct 1798,
Fairfield Co, SC. Some of his sons went to Greene County, AL in the 1820's.
(A lot of descendents lived in Noxubee Co, MS in the last half of the
nineteenth century.)
2. Jacob Cockrell, b. ca. 1750, d. 1792 in Nash Co, NC. Most of his
descendants moved into Greene Co, AL in the 1820's. (Descendents were
living in Clay Co, MS in the last half of the nineteenth century)
3. John Cockrell, b. ca. 1750, d. Mar 1809 in Nash Co, NC. Most of his
descendents moved into Greene Co, AL in the 1820's. (Descendents were in
Chickasaw Co., Clay Co, and Itawamba Co, MS in the last half of the
nineteenth century.)
4. Thomas Cockrell, b. ca. 1745, d. 1799 in Johnston Co, NC. Land plats
show that while he was in a different county, his land was right across the
creek from John Cockrell's. His descendents went to GA and to AL and then
into MS and TX (Descendents were in Itawamba Co, MS in the last half of the
nineteenth century.) I know that Jack Olsen thinks this line descended from
a Thomas Cockrell of New Kent Co, VA.
5. Major John Cockrill, b. 19 Dec 1757 in VA, d. Nashville, Davidson Co,
TN, 11 Apr 1837. It has been hypothesized that he was in Frederick Co, VA
and also from Richmond Co, VA. A few of his descendents went into AL and
TX. (Many people consider him to be a half-brother of Simon. This has not
been proved to my satisfaction. The Rev. Simon was in Prince William Co,
and later Washington Co in SW Virigina and at least one of his sons was in
Wythe Co.)
6. Presley Cockerall/Cockriel of Warren County, KY. The Cockriels were in
Warren County, KY by 1830; however, a majority of Presley's children were
born in VA in Wythe Co. This is one of the southwest counties of VA.
You will note that I did include John of Nash County even thought nobody
from this line has been tested yet. I hope that we'll be able to find a
Cockrell descendent of John who will be willing to participate in the DNA
testing. I feel pretty certain that he is part of this group.
Okay, how do these six men relate? Moses is considerably older than the
other five. Perhaps he was an uncle of Jacob, John , and Thomas and they
had the same father who was perhaps older than Moses. Perhaps Moses was
also an uncle to Presley and Major John but their father was a younger
brother. Does anyone else have any working hypotheses regarding how these
men might fit together.

Dear List,
I am happy to report that I got in touch with the man whose Most Distant
Ancestor was listed as John Cockerill of Nash County, NC. He assures me
that he is NOT descended from John Cockrell of Nash County, NC. He is not
sure how that name got on his test results but he was going to get onto the
DNA web site to get this corrected. His most distant ancestor is actually
Thomas Cockerill of Loudoun/Fairfax County, VA.

Looking for information on great aunt, Ellen Cockrell or Cockrill. Believed to have married Isaac Cockrill/Cockrell in early 1880's in Mississippi. He was a doctor and appears in the 1900 census in Clay County Mississippi.
Thank you.
Tom,
If you're out there, please Email me. The Email address I have for you is
no longer any good.

I am fascinated to see that we have matches on the DNA tests between Moses
Cockrell of Fairfield Co, SC; William Haywood Cockrell of Nash County, NC;
John Cockrill of Nashville, TN; Thomas Cockrell of New Kent County, VA; and
Presley Cockerall of Warren County, KY.
It is even more fascinating that John Cockerill of Nash County, NC does not
match with William Haywood Cockrell above. I would really like to hear from
the people who participated in the DNA testing as to how they descend from
the most distant ancestor that they have listed on the DNA test results.
Could the participants please stand up and tell us about your descent so
that we can see how you fit with what others of us have researched? Maybe
what you know about your family can give us some of those connections we
have been searching for. If you don't want to write to the list, please
feel free to write me directly; but I am sure that everyone would really be
interested in who you are and how you fit in the
Cockrell/Cockerill/Cockerall/Cockrill (you know all the derivations of the
name) family.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you soon.

Dear Cockrill Cousins,
We have received all the DNA reports posted on our DNA page
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Cockrill/
Good News we have 5 matches
Alas My Anderson Cockrell's DNA does NOT match. We are rechecking, but
looks like my
research is flawed, there is an illegitimacy, or Anderson is simply not
related to the
other Cockrill families. Family Tree DNA is rechecking my Anderson
Cockrill's DNA. Odds are that it is correct. This is meant to be funny "I
am accepting all forms of sympathy!"
I will be trying to get another cousin to submit his DNA, with the hope of a
better result.
If the reports are correct my family is from Middle Europe Haplo Group rlb.
All the others are Haplo Group 1 which means they are from the Scandanavian
countries.
Atleast my Burgess DNA was a perfect match.
To those whose family members have submitted DNA samples: If I have made a
mistake
and you would like to make changes in the ancestors named please let me
know.
According to Family Tree DNA #7 and #8 are not related to each other or to
the other
groups. #7 and #8 may be related back about 1000 to 1100.
Just for the record I am not a DNA expert.
We are still accepting more Cockrill DNA reports. If you are interested
please submit
your requests to Family Tree DNA.
thanks
