I have recently discovered a connection to the surname Cockrell or a variant spelling of the surname, in the Colchester area of Essex England.
I have a Sarah Cockrell dau. of John Ralph Cockrell, who married a Henry Thomas Fish. Sarah and Henry married at Stepney in Middlesex but Sarah appears in the 1841 census as born in the county of Essex and in the 1851 as born at Colchester.
The Cockrell family are shown in the 1841 at Bradfield Essex, with parents John Cockrell and Elizabeth. siblings are shown at this census as John, Mariah, Keziah, Kerenhappuck, Susannah & Martin. Loooking at the ages of these children it seems that there may have been older children that had left home by the 1841 census as the eldest child shown in the 1841 was John aged 14 and parents were aged 43 and 40, leaving room for at least two elder children I would think.
In the 1851 census the father John Cockrell said he was born at Lawford Essex mother Elizabeth born at Bradfield but children shown born Colchester.
If you think this might be worth investigation please get in touch.
Regards
Jenny DeAngelis.

I'm looking for info on James Henry Cockrell, b. 9/2/??, d. 3/14/1886. He lived in Colchester, England and married a woman named Nellie. They had a daughter Emily Martha, b. 11/14/1858. I have much info on descendants, but I'm looking for ancestors of James and Nellie.
Larry,
In checking your project includes:
Project Surnames:
Cockerall Cockerel Cockerell
Cockerill Cockrel Cockrell
Cockriel Cockrill
The existing project includes:
Project Surnames:
Cockerall Cockerel Cockerill
Cockrell Cockril Cockrill
It appears they include 5 common variations on the spelling........ why
would you think they should be separate projects? In most of the
projects conducted by Jim, he has asked that any variation of the name feel
free to participate.

Hi Rosemary,
I really don't know how to answer this since I explained it already in the
mail message. I'm not sure what you mean by diluting the project. I only
have one project so it can't dilute anything.
If you are speaking of the Cockrill project, you will notice that the
Cockerell name isn't included there. Also most of the goals are different.
As I said in the mail message if this project proves the same ancestors as
another project then they could be merged. If the ancestors are different
why would I want to dilute my project?

Larry,
I really don't undertand the need for a 2nd DNA project for the
Cockrell/Cockerell/Cockrill etc line. Granted your line may end up being
from different ancestors but I would think that would be more the reason to
keep the projects together.
Why dilute this research project?

Hi,
I have started a new DNA project at FamilyTreeDNA titled Cockerell. The
reason for a new project is my present genealogy research does not show a
connection to any of the established projects. If after sending in kits, I
discover connections to an existing project, we can merge the projects.
The web page is www.familytreedna.com/public/cockerell. All of the latest
information can be found there.
If there are any Cockrell's descending from John C. Cockrell that would like
to participate, we would welcome it. We have one participant (Cockerell)
that traces to John C. Cockrell through Archibald (Baldy) Cockrell and one
(Cockrell) that traces to John C. Cockrell through Joseph Jacob Cockrell.
Also anyone that descends from one of John C. Cockrell's brothers, Thomas
and Jacob would help to confirm those lines.
Please let me know of any questions.
Happy New Year!
Larry R. Cockerell
