I found this piece about John Cockrell several years ago while doing research on my New England line. I often wondered whether this John Cockerill of New Haven, was the same John Cockrell that eventually settled in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Anyone ever made this connection before or care to comment?
John Cockerill - 1639 a resident of the Colony of New Haven prior to its absorption into Connecticut.
John Cockerill - 1641, the lot on Chapel St., next west of Mr. Atwater's, was assigned to John Cockerill, probably a Yorkshireman, who built a house thereon, but shortly after removed, leaving his house and lands in charge of Thomas Fugill. The estate stands in the name of Fugill in the schedule; but when after Fugill's departure the fences decayed, and the rates remained unpaid, it was ascertained that Cockerill had never alienated and still claimed it. Allen Ball, a brother-in-law of Fugill, and perhaps also related to Cockerill, was requested by the town to 'take the house and land and improve them for defraying charges of rates and fencings;' .....
I am seeking information on Thomas William Cockrell, b-20 May 1882 and d-May
1965. Married Mary Ellen Jones. Spent most of his life in Mississippi. This
couple had four daughters and one son. Any help would be appreciated.

Morning, Ann,
I read your note with interest, however, I am afraid the problem comes not
from who Jeremiah's mother was but rather from the information from F. M.
Cockrell. COCKRELL researchers have spent years trying to correct the
errors made in his research. With interest in genealogy increasing and
modern technology plus the continuing discovery of new documents etc. a
great deal of his work has been disproved.
In 2002 Jim Burgress compiled a wonderful work consisting of almost 700
pages on the various COCKRELL (and variations of the spelling) families.
Via the COCKRELL List he requested research and information on the various
COCKRELL (and variations) families which he then organized by researchers
and/or families. This work includes wills, family letters, census records,
etc.
To answer your questions concerning the Sanford connection, Elizabeth Ann
Ramey (wife of Thomas COCKRELL/COCKERILL) was the daughter of Jacob Ramey
and Ann Sanford.

Samuel J. 3
Mary S. 1
We can determine the birth and death dates from a Cockrell-Payne bible found on the Rootsweb, Barren County page.
William W. Cockill was born July 2, 1819 Died Dec. 13, 1852 Note: The bible shows the death date incorrectly as 1832.
Caroline Cockrill was born May 17, 1818 Died Feb. 16, 1885
James W. Cockrill was born jan. 15, 1845 Died Aug. 14, 1906
Samuel J. Cockrill was born Nov. 9, 1846 Died June 13, 1866
Mary Susan Cockrill was born Oct. 10, 1848
Joseph Cockrill was born Sept. 13, 1850
John A. Cockrill was born Jan 4, 1853 Died Mar. 17, 1888
Laura Bell Payne was born May 22, 1859
William Froman Payne was born July 23, 1861
Carrie Eugenia Wells was born July 8, 1876 Died Aug. 8, 1876
William Wells was born Dec. 28, 1842 Died Feb. 16, 1885
Mary Louise Davidson was born Jan 29, 1899
It can be detemined by the two above documents that William W. Cockrill died 1852 prior to the birth of John A. in Jan of 1853. Although Henry Clay is not shown in the bible he is listed in the 1860 census as being a member of the family now headed by James M. Payne. It can be determined that Caroline married Jame M. Payne sometime between the birth of John A. Cockrill and Laura Bell Payne. Further research of James M. Payne shows that he was a promenient figure in Barren Co., Ky. the 1850 census shows that his first wife had died prior to 1850. James is shown as aged 46 and with daugher Mary E. aged 12.
William W. Cockrill is the son of Joseph Green Cockrill and Nancy Foster. Joseph is the son of William Cockrill and Francis Jones of Virginia and North Carolina. Although, there is not a great deal of information on Henry Clay Cockrill specificly, on can find information on his ancestry. There is too much to provide in this format. I will be providing further information on Henry Clay at a latter date.

Hi-
I am also researching this family line. I think the Florence Casky you mentioned may be my great grandmother. Please respond. Thanks

Thanks for taking on such a job. Always appreciated.
My Cockrells that I can not find for love nor money are:
Samuel Cockrell borne 1848 in Sumter County, AL He married Catherine Puckett
from Noxubee County County Mississippi.
Samuel's father was Wiley Cockrell. I found an 1850 census from Tuscaloosa
with this family. Also, an 1860 census from Newton County,MS I am pretty sure is
this family.
From Samuel and Catherine to me, I have all I need. However, I know very
little about Wiley and his wife and absolutely nothing further back. Can not
connect with anyone.
ANY help or clue, just so I may start digging again would be so much
appreciated.
Thanks!!

Thanks so much Tom for taking care of the list and welcome Lori for taking
over! I'm "relatively" new at this list thingy but I'm sure I'll get the hang
of it. My brick wall is my great grandfather Arthur W. Cockrell who was born
in Loudoun Co., Va. in 1867. He died mysteriously and was reportedly buried on
a farm in "sycolin" in northern Va. His date of death is unknown to me. He
married Blanche Benjamin in 1893. His parents were Baily D. Cockrell (b.
1802)and Elizabeth (last name unknown). I would like to find Baily D. Cockrell's
parents and where Arthur is buried as well as a death cert. or newspaper
clipping to confirm the family legend i have been told regarding his death.
Thank-you for your time.
