Nancy Cockrell, daughter of Archibald & Selah, married John H. Hester on 13 Jun 1844 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. She and John were neighbors, living in adjoining farms on the Lost Corner Road. This particular road is right along the Monroe County line. The Cockrells property was pretty much in Itawamba and the Hesters mostly in Monroe. However, the only way to get to this "lost corner" in Monroe County was to go into Itawamba County and back down to it. It got missed more than once by enumerators.. They were married by Joseph Conwill at his home in the Carolina Community (which is where they lived). The marriage license was handwritten with some writing in the margins, making it rather interesting.
I am sending this message to the list because there appears to be some misinformation about her spouse/marriage circulating.

Catherine (Kitty) Riley, b. 27 SEP 1795, based upon her age as probably reflected on her tombstone, in Prince Wm Co., VA., or 22 OCT 1794 based upon her age given at time of death. She was married to Peter Cockerell 20 OCT 1816 in Wood Co., VA. by James McAboy. Peter had served in the Virginia Volunteer Militia 6th Regiment commanded by Capt. D. Coleman as a Private under Capt. Joseph Gilbert from 10 JAN 1814 until 20 APR 1814. He volunteered at Dumfier, Prince William Co., VA and was discharged at Norfolk, VA.
His regiment was marched through Eastern Virginia to the sea Coast. He did garrison duty there per Catherine's Declaration of a Widow for Pension filed 6 MAY 1876. They later moved to Ross Co., OH. On page 52 of the Huntington Township, Ross County Ohio census for Chillicothe, dated 29 JUN 1860, on line 384/370, Peter Cockrell is listed as being 66 years old, a farmer, born in Virginia and Catherine is listed as being 60, also born in Virginia. Catherine said she was 66 in the 1870 census. Per entry No. 282, Vol. 1 of the Ross Co., Ohio Death Registry, "Peter Cockerell died 3 JUL 1870, age 77, married, in Huntington TWP." The same registry reflects Catherine died 26 MAR 1886 a widow, age 91 years, 5 months, 4 days in Huntington TWP, Ross county of old age. Her age was given as 90 years, 6 months and 2 days on her tombstone. Both Catherine and Peter are buried in the Baptist Hill Cemetery, Huntington TWP, Ross Co., OH. The abandoned church is still there.
Hello:
My brick wall is my grandfather, Henry Clay Cockrell. What little information I have is listed below and would truly appreciate any information or suggestions on researching his name.
NAME: Henry Clay Cockrell
BORN: Possible, 2-14-1860 to 1869 in Kentucky
DIED: 7-30-1920, Izoro, Lampasas County, Texas
MARRIED: Sarah Frances Harper, 6-10-1892 in Williamson County, Texas
RE: Sarah Frances Harper, b. 9-11-1870 in Kentucky, parents: John Solomon and Mariah Louise (Compton-maiden name), d. 1-19-1955 in Lampasas, Texas.
CHILDREN OF SARAH AND HENRY COCKRELL: Eleven children: Edna, Ellis, Jewel, Estelle,Alafair, Frances, Henry, Eunice, Bessie Ruth, Etoile,Lloyd
NOTE: Henry Clay Cockrell's death certificate states his father was: Henry Clay Cockrell (no mother's name). However the informant was the registrar and I believe this could have been incorrect. Also, he supposedly visited some relatives in Oklahoma about 1890 to 1892. I have information on his death, but I do not know his parent's name or any siblings.
Thank you, in advance, for any leads or information. If anyone has his name in file, I really would like to correspond.

Welcome, Lori! Thanks so much for taking over the list! Thanks too, to Tom for all his great work on the Cockrell list!
I descend from Thomas Cockrell b. 1697 in Westmoreland, VA and wife, Elizabeth Ann Ramey through their son, Moses Cockrell b. abt. 1725 and his wife Jane Younge/Young.
My children have a double Cockrell connection in both my Cockrell line and their father's Cockrell line of William Haywood Cockrell, the son of Jacob Cockrell b. ca. 1750 and died 1790 in Nash Co., NC and wife Penelope.

Tom & Lori,
I want to thank Tom Cockrell for his years of keeping the list going. I recall when he started the list some years back, he was not in good health at the time, and ask me to administer the list. I have always felt badly that I was just to involved in other activities to help him with the list. Thanks Tom for your years of commitment to your project! We have all benefited greatly because of your work.
Lori,
Thanks to you for taking up the challenge, and I am sure you will do a great job. Apparently, we are cousins since I also descend from Archibald Cockrell and his wife Selah Pridgen. I am sure you know that Baldy Cockrell and two of his brothers married sisters of his wife Selah Pridgen. I descend from his son by the same name who married twice, and my grandfather, Dr. Lonnie Lee Cockerell was the son of Arch Cockerell and his second wife Van Burena Rush. Vannie Rush, as she was called, was born in 1846 in the new state of Texas and her parents, Major James Martin Rush and his wife Tennessee Blair are my Republic of Texas ancestors. I am active in the Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) because of their early arrival in the Republic of Texas before it became the 28st state on February 19, 1846. I am also active in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) because of the service of Major Thomas Blair, the grandfather of Tennessee Blair Rush.
I am sure you know that Archibald Cockrell, Sr., called Baldy, was the son of John B. Cockrell born about 1756, and his wife Nancy Ann Winstead. I have never seen documentation of the next generation, but one of Tom Cockrell's cousins believes we descended from a Thomas Cockrell. I would appreciate a copy of any documentation you might have proving the next generation.
You may have noticed above that I added an extra "e" to the spelling of Arch Cockerell's name. My mother, Melba Dal Cockerell Green believed that she was not related to any one unless they had the extra "e" in the spelling of their name. I tried to tell her that it appears that Arch just liked the letter "e" and decided to add it to the spelling of his name.
Another story that circulated in my mother's family was that her father's grandmother was one half Native American. I always doubted this because my mother and her family were very light complexioned and several of her sisters were red headed. This did not sound like a family who had Native American blood, but I checked as best I could and found that Selah Pridgen, the wife of Baldy Cockrell, was the daughter of Drewry Pridgen who was married to Sarah Creekmore. The only Native American blood I could find is a story that an uncle of Drewry Pridgen married a Choctaw Indian Princess, so this is probably where the story came from. There is a very active Pridgen list if you need info on that line.
I am sure you have considerable information on your Nancy Jane "Evvie" Cockrell born about 1825 who first married Matthew Johnson Abbott, and second Ruffas Bryan. I grew up in Mabank, Texas which was first named Laundale, and Arch and Vannie lived there for some time, and there was a Bryan family that lived in the area, that my mother said we were related to by marriage. I assume this connection was through your Ruffas Bryan
Best Regards,
Tom Green
Son of Melba Dal Cockerell
Daughter of Dr. Lonnie Lee Cockerell
Son of Arch Cockerell
Son of Baldy Cockrell

My name is Lori Thornton. I'm a descendant of Archibald and Selah Cockrell through their daughter Nancy. It's been awhile since there's been a lot of activity on the list so maybe you can help me get acquainted with you by telling about your Cockrell brick wall, your favorite Cockrell ancestor, or something of the like. Remember to include approximate dates and locations!
I'll get started by telling about a rather interesting deed found about my great great grandmother's brother Archibald (son of Archibald and Selah) in Itawamba County, Mississippi. It seems that he was having a little bit of trouble with the law and had to use some land for bail. His offense: selling liquor in quantities of one gallon or less. I assume that it may have been a misdemeanor to sell it for less than one gallon and a felony for greater than that. However, the deed strikes a person as funny when they are just reading it. Something even more interesting is that the land was later owned by one of my great great grandmother's sons. He is supposed to have been known for his wine making.

I am sorry to hear Tom isn't feeling well but I'm sure Lori, you will do a
fine job. Welcome. My brick wall is for my children' s father's ancestor. He
shares the same line with many "cousins" on this list. He descends from Andrew
Jackson Cockerill's line out of KY. I'm not sure if anyone has the line back
beyond mother Margaret. Has anyone documented her husband to be John Presley
Cockerill? Has anyone figured out Margaret's maiden name? Spelling of the surname
seems to vary. I am curious to know if anyone out there spells it with one "l"
like my ex husband's line in Louisville, KY does? I have time to search if
someone gives me some clues as to where to go next.
Pam

Hello All,
The end of May is fast approaching. I sent an email about 5 weeks ago stating that the Cockrell list will be placed on the adoption list at the end of May.
I received a couple of inquires but no firm takers. It is your best interest that someone for the current list of researchers assume the responsibility. Whomever takes over the list will have the addresses of all subscribers. They will also have control over what information is disbursed to the group. We all have to put up with SPAM mail everyday. In incorrect hands the volume could increase.
The actual running of the list takes very little time. One could assume no more than a couple of hours a month. The turnover is quick and painless. I will always be here to assist when needed.

COCKRELL is not a generic name.......there are many different COCKRELL
families from many different locations who descend from different ancestors.
Your best bet would be to ask your friend if he knows anything about his
family and where they originated............you might also want to ask him
why you haven't met his family after two years of dating.
I married a man who is a Cockrell descendant but did not carry the Cockrell
surname........my grandmother was also a Cockrell.......out two Cockrell
lines have never crossed and to this day never connected.

My Cockrill ancestors are from Maury Co, TN. If you could let me know who you have pictures of I would greatly appreciate it. The ones I'm most interested in are Washington Pike Cockrill and his wife Sallie Ballanfant Cockrill. They are my Great-Grandparents. Please let me know something.
Thanks,
