Bill SB 174 - Filed by Jane Nelson, District 12 Grapevine, TX ,makes it impossible to be able to access information on marriage records to the public, including genealogists and family historians.
Bills SB861/HB1778 seek to make birth records remain closed for 75 years. Currently they are closed for 50 years. This makes it increasingly difficult, and for some impossible to research their lineage and family history.
DD214 legislation is also being passed in a futile attempt to stop identity theft. There is a petition online, but, if you would rather develop your own, that is fine, too. The link to the petition is http://www.petition-them.com , then click Human Rights tab.
Please help us to stop the government from taking away access to our heritage. We would appreciate you signing the petition and/or contacting your state representatives and senators regarding this issue.

Jack, I don't know if this will help any but I have the following:
Thomas B. Cockrell, b. ca. 1801 in Chester Co, SC, m. Nancy McShan. She was
supposedly b. ca. 1807 in Fairfield Co, SC. He d. between 1850 and 1860 in
Fairfield SC and she d. ca. 1880 in Pickens Co, AL. I have only one child
listed for them--Jacob F. Cockrell, b. ca. 1833. He supposedly married Mary
Elizabeth Jane Fant ca. 1857. Jacob d. between 1861-65 in Pickens Co, AL
and his wife d. in Canadian, OK in 1924. The had at least one son George F.
Cockrell b. 1 May 1859 in Pickens Co, AL. Supposedly this Thomas B.
Cockrell was a son of William Cockrell and Rebecca Brown. This information
was sent to me by Nancy Trout Frame of Ada, OK in 1987.
I have a marriage record for Thomas Cockrell and Jane Burton that shows they
married in Greene Co, AL on 4 Dec 1824. He was b. ca. 1801 in SC and she
was b. ca. 1808 in SC.
Were Nancy and Thomas actually in the 1850 Pickens Co, AL census? If so
this would differ from what Nancy sent me in 1987 since she seemed to think
that Thomas B. had died in SC between 1850-1860.
Have I just muddied the waters or have I given you some clues as to where
else you might look?

Hi,
It's good to see the list become so active again. I am descended from Thomas Cockrell and his wife Mary ?.
Thomas died around 1829. He is shown as Thomas Cockerell, Sr. on the "Authentic List of All Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Rev. War by the State of Ga." This list is available on the Ga. Archives Website. He was living in Newton County, Ga. at that time, and that is where his wife Mary died. Their children were Cinderley (my 3rd gr-grandmother who married Notley Mobley); Sanford; Thomas, Jr.; George; Jesse; Jane; Margaret; Mary; John; and Lettis.
I would very much like to find Mary Cockrell's maiden name and documented proof of Thomas' line.
Susan Mann
I need help from Cockrell researchers concerning a Thomas Cockrell b-ca 1800
SC who married Nancy S. Mcshane 1825 in Fairfield SC. This couple had eleven
children. First found in the 1850 Pickens County, Alabama Census, pg 76.
Thomas must have died prior to 1870 for wife Nance was listed in the 1870
census without a husband. In 1870 Nancy is listed as living with Sandford
Cockrell, age 22. There seems to be some confusion between this Thomas
Cockrell and a Thomas B. Cockrell, also found in the 1850 Pickens County
census--Thomas B. married Jane T.Burton. Maybe I am the only one confused
Jack and Leah Olson
Jack and other Cockrell Researchers,
I show that John S. was the son of Joseph, Sr. and Elizabeth ?. He was b.
in SC before 1780 and d. ca. 1853. Joseph's will was dated 18 Feb 1852 and
probated in Greene County, AL 9 May 1853. I take it from your Email that
she was Elizabeth Herr. I show their children to be as follows:
1. Joseph, d. before 18 Feb 1852. He had at least one son named Moses.
2. Ellen, m. ? Lee; d. before 18 Feb 1852. She had at least one daugther
named Eliza.
3. Moses, m. ca. 1826 to Regina "Joiney" Chipman in Greene Co, AL; d.
before 18 Feb 1852. They had at least two daughters: Sarah A. who m. Wm.
Franklin and Elizabeth who m. James G. Lay.
4. John S. who I gave information on last night.
5. Thomas, m. Jane Barton, ca. 1824, Greene Co, AL
6. Jeremiah, m . Ailsey Ann Roberts, ca. 1846, Greene Co, AL
7. Sandford, m. Mary Brown, Greene Co, AL
8. Nancy, b. ca. 1819, SC; m. James Free, 29 Dec 1836, Greene Co, AL
9. Eliza, b. ca. 1823, SC m. Simon Free, Jr., 04 Jan 1837, Greene Co, AL
Anyone have anything else to add to this?

Kay--many thanks to you for getting me straight on the family of John S.
Cockrell. I have now made the corrections to my Cockrell data base. But
now, who the heck are the parents of John L. Lewis, b-ca.1819? Am I
correct by having Joseph Cockrell and Elizabeth Herr as the parents of John
S. I have this John named in Joseph's Will and listed on the same page in
a early census document?. Any help would be appreciated.
