Rosemary and Jack and other researchers,
I have a transcribed copy of the will of John S. Cockrell who m. 1) Patsy
Lewis and 2) Liza Roberts. The only two children that I show he had by
Patsy Lewis were Regina, b. ca 1824, m. Wm. T. Jennings ca. 1852 and Martha
Caroline, b. ca. 1827, m. Benjamin Malone on 5 Dec 1840. Regina was named
in her grandmother Elizabeth Lewis' will on 12 Dec 1833. She does not
appear in John S. Cockrell's will written around Oct 1856. He did not die
until ca. 31 Dec 1865 in Greene Co. AL.
Martha Caroline Malone was named as a daughter by a former marriage and was
not entitled to division or general support in his will although he did
leaver her $100 but only at the death or remarriage of his widow, and not
before.
I show that John S. did not marr Patsy Lewis until 23 Jan 1824 in Greene Co,
AL, which means they were married several years after John Lewis was born.
His second marriage to Elizabeth Lisa Roberts occured on 8 Sep 1833 in
Greene Co, AL.
John S. Cockrell's children by Liza Roberts who is named as "Elizabeth" in
his will include Mary Elizabeth, b. ca. 1835, m. 17 Sep 1859 to Moody H.
May, Sr.; Nancy Julia Angeline, b. ca. 1837, m. Thomas A. Lisles 18 Nov
1854; John Wesly Cockrell b. ca. 1839, m. Nancy R. Law in 1882; Alsey Ann,
b. ca. 1841, m. B,. Roberts (she may have married a Berry second for she is
named Berry in her father's will); Margaret Emily, b. ca. 1844, never
married, d./ 1932; Victoria M., b. ca 1847; Lucy, b. ca. 1849; and Willy
Elvira who m. Allen M. Roberts in 1884; and Samuel Joseph. The names of his
children by Elizabeth in his will are entered without commas separating
them. It appears that there is also a daughter Josephine and a daughter
Eliza Ellender Laurentius Cockrell and possibly one of two daughters named
as Sarah Ann Cisally Melissa Victoria Cockrell. I wonder if he had a
daughter Sarah Ann who married a man named Cisally. Victoria's name is
generally written as Victoria M. or M. Victoria.

Tom and Researchers,
There is a lot of controversy regarding the fact that some think that Maj.
John Cockrill and the Rev. Simon Cockrell were brothers. I believe that
this was started by F. G. Cockrell, Jr. who wrote the "Family History" in
1890 and furthered by F. N. Cockrell, Jr. in 1910 when he expanded on this
document.
1. It seems to be generally accepted that Maj. John was the son of the John
Cockrill who came to VA in February, 1755 with Gen. Braddock to fight
against the French in North American and who subsequently remained in
America after Gen. Braddock's death in July, 1755.
2. Most people think that the John who came from England had been married
prior to some unknown wife before he married Maj. John's mother. This
unknown wife is supposedly the Rev. Simon's mother. However, that would
make the Rev. Simon born in England because he was born ca. 1742-1746. It
is pretty well documented that Simon was born in VA.
3. Maj. John wrote in his Bible an autobiographical sketch that was
published in Tennessee Bible Records -- Tombstone Inscriptions beginning
with "my life from my 17th year, 1774, the day after a tremendously big
frost, about the 3rd or 4th of May." He states, "As my father and
step-father were both dead and left a very poor family, so of course there
was nothing left for me, so my mother bound me to a blacksmith and I stayed
with him well on five years, and learned that trade, and also to make buns,
but I was drafted in the time, I believe twice." This account contains the
story that begins "I went one time to Watauga as the Indians had attacked
their fort." He talks about is marriage to Ann (Robertson) Johnston and her
three children by her first husband, although he does not name her. No
where does he mention a brother although he names others who lived near him.
Of course, the sketch was unfinished.
4. His mother has been named as Deborah Fox and as Barbara (Fox)
Collingsworth.
This probably only muddies the waters; but I personally believe that Maj.
John Cockrill and the Rev. Simon Cockrell were not brothers. Because F. N.
and F. G. Cockrell were making fantastic leaps of faith (leaps like, John
and Jacob of NC and Moses of SC and so and so of VA are all of the same
generation so they were probably brothers) and their "research?" was printed
and shared (and I was one of the ones who helped share it), we have set the
research of some of the Cockrell lines back because people would rather
accept it than look for the real truth. I really urge anyone descended
from these two lines to start all over on their search for the ancestors of
these two men because too much of what has been written is based on
suppositions by men who did no real research but only assumed that everyone
with the last name of Cockrell, no matter how it was spelled, were related.

Interesting, and thanks for the reference. I wonder what her documentation
was? According the John Cockrill's obituary noting his death on 10 April,
1837 ( "National Banner and Nashville Whig and Daily Republican Banner" of
10 May 1837), "He was born near Winchester Virginia (this would be
Frederick County), where he grew up to manhood." According to his
Autobiographical Sketch, "I was drafted in the time, I believe twice. I
went one time to Watauga as the Indians had attacked their fort." Rangers
of Col. William Russel from Virginia, and 100 mounted men sent by Col. Evan
Shelby arrived to relieve the fort and could have included John Cockrill.

Listers,
Octavia Zollicofer Bond writes in the ' The Nashville American' Sunday,
Nov. 28, 1909 an article on 'The Cockrill Family'. She provides an
insight to the Cockrill family of Nashville. It is quite extensive and
gives a historical and biographical prospective to the Maj. John
Cockrill family. I will provide one paragraph that gives the reader a
different look at the ancestory of Rev. Simon Cockrell.
She states:
"Major John Cockrill was born in Wythe Co. Va., Dec. 9, 1757. His
father John Cockrill, being a planter of consequence in Wythe County and
a member of the House of Burgesses, had married Barbara Fox,
granddaughter of Lord De La Ware (Deleware), governor of Virginia. John
Cockrill and his brother, Simon Cockrill, had first seen Watauga
Settlement as soldiers in Col. Christian's expedition against the
Cherokees, and like many another of Christian's another of Christian's
troopers had fallen in love with the country to which they returned with
the intention of remaining. But they were soon afterwards seized with
the "Western Fever" that carried numbers of the most enterprising
Virginians of that period to the lower waters of the Cumberland country
John Cockrill selected the French Salt Lick as his point of designation,
whereas his brother Simon chose instead to settle in Kentucky. From the
descendants of the latter was to sprung Senator Cockrill, of Missouri."
Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks, Jack, however, I do not believe that James Lidel Cockrell was the
son of Moses B. Cockrell but instead Moses B. Cockrell's son was Thomas
Lidell Cockrell was shown in the census records below:

COCKRELL, John B., 5 M W b. MS
(Family also listed in 1870 Census of Macon, Noxubee Co., MS pg. 92A.....the
only difference if the amounts $3120 $100)
Notice that in the 1880 Census Thomas is now called Lidell and John B. is
now Beale, therefore we have Thomas Lidell and John Beale as the sons of
Moses B. and Aurelia D. Williams Cockrell.

place of birth of his parents are a match.. Apparently Emma is Tom's

son, Henry, and 11 years older than his youngest son, Robert.

Can anyone identify the COCKRELL families to whom the following belong?
Buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Macon, Noxubee Co., MS
Caroline COCKRELL, wife of Byrd Ivy, b. Oct. 5, 1827, died Nov. 30, 1895.
Thomas Woodrow COCKRELL b. Apr. 24, 1854 died Nov. 16, 1922, spouse of Fannie Ivy.
Buried in Soule Chapel Cemetery, Noxubee Co., MS:
Agnes Ameline Cockrell, wife of J. L. Cockrell (apparently the L is Lidel from other entries on infants of this couple...there is also a Julian Cockrell who might possibly be their son.so maybe the J.L is Julian Lidel Cockrell???)
I have a listing for Thomas Liddell Cockrell who was the son of Moses B. Cockrell and wife Aurelia D. Williams. I also have a Thomas Woodward Cockrell b. July 04, 1866 d. 1943 & wife Beattie Walker Cockrell who are buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
