One of my ancestress' family is baffling. I can find absolutely nothing
on her before she married into the Cockrell family. At a family reunion
this past weekend 2 grandsons of hers told me a very similar story on
separate occasions that I want to look into but have no idea how to proceed.
They say that they remember family discussions concerning the fact that she
was 1/4 Cherokee Indian. That she had been "bought" by a family as a young
child to be raised as a house servant for the family; she stayed with this
family until she "ran away" and married my 2nd great grandfather.
This area was once part of the Cherokee Nation. Her picture as a young
girl does show evidence suggesting typical Native American features. There
is a site near where the family whom I thought she was a part of , lived
known as "An old Indian Burial ground". She was born 1860; married abt
1880... I do have her death certificate which names her mother, but list
father as "UNKNOWN"
Did the practice of "buying" children really happen, even after the Civil
War?

Subject: Cockrell Family
Hi;
I'm Connie Chick and I'm looking for information on my family tree. I hope you will be able to shine some light on this for me. This is what I know right now, my mother name was Edith Constance Cockrell born March 19, 1913, in Woodland, Yolo County, California. She has two sisters and a brother, who was killled in World War II. Their parents pass-away when my mother was 13-years old and they were send to an aunt in San Diego, Callifornia. I believe one of her sister's first name is/was Eleanor and their mother maiden name was Gardiner. Please e-mail any information that might help me in my search. Thank You for your time.
Connie
