I am writing in response to your web page. I am searching for
information on
my great-grandmother, Nancy Cockrell. Nancy was a Cherokee indian and
married
Will Smith of Texas around the turn of the century. They had several
children
and moved to north Alabama around 1920 due to Will's work with the
railroad.
They settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where they died. We are just
beginning
our search and would appreciate any information you may be able to
provide.
Thank You,
Amy Skinner
Hi Group,
I found some new info, for me, the other day and wanted to post it just in
case someone can use the data. In a book entitled, "Virginia Soldiers of
1776" on page 248 is info about the service of William Cockrell. The data
discusses Richard Cockrell as the sole heir at law of William Cockrell, a
soldier in the Continential Line from 1777. Does anyone know who these
Cockrells are?

Hi Cockerell Researchers
I have a John Thomas Cockerell who married a Jane Manuel in Sydney
Australia in 1843 I think they had eleven children. Benjamin
Born 1843 Sydney, John Thomas born 1846 Sydney, James F. born 1847
Sydney, Sarah J. born 1849 Sydney, Emily A. born 1854 Sydney, Jessie
E. born 1856 Sydney, Elizabeth E. born 1859 Brisbane, Clarence
Charles born 1861 Brisbane, Emma Rosa born 1868 Brisbane, Fanny Maltilda
born 1865 and George Henry born 1864. I believe John Thomas
Cockerell may of been a Sea Captain (I havent been able to find him
on any mariners lists.) I would love to hear from anybody who could
help me with this family or has anybody come across a Cockerell Sea
Captain.
Interesting discussion on what the Cockerells looked like. The
Cockerells are on my husbands fathers side of the family so am not sure who
followed who in looks, my husbands father and sister had darkish
brown hair with blue eyes
Julie .
Peter B. Cockrell applied for a pension in 1820 in Bourbon Co. Ky. He
was very ill as was his wife. By this time he stated that his children
had already left the house. His was very poor and stated that one of
his possessions was a broken pot.
In any event Berkley Co., Va. was a very large county in Va. It was the
mother county of many of the later counties.
I know of a Peter P. Cockrell that was also in Berkley Co. at the same
time. He was originally from Lancaster Va.
Good luck on finding exactly where he may have been. I have been
searching for Peter P. for some time.

While browsing in "History of Henry and St Clairs Counties" 1883. (Missouri)
I found the following biography thout it might help someone.
"H P cockrel
farmer section 12 is the son of Peter B Colckrell a native of Bourbon county
Ky who was married in Cooper county Missouri to Miss elizabeth Sprouil
orginally of virginia. H P was born in cooper county Missouri May 23, 1839.
about the year 1847 he came to St Clair county Missouri where he now has a
farm of eighty acres. In 1863 he enlisted in the Missouri State militia
Calvary served two years one month and two days and was mustered out as
sergeant in December 1859. Mr C was married to Miss Harriet J Sprouil a
native of St Clair County Missouri. they have had four children three of
whom are now living Margaret G, Nellie A and Mollie A L."
This Peter and H P appear to be ones mentioned in F N Cockrel document on
page 6.
My interest is that F N document mentions a property transaction in Berkley
co Va . I can place my Martin cockrell in that county in same time period.
Any one know any more about the Peter or the Berkley Co Va family.
I live less than 30 miles from the location of St Clair co Cockrells they
were uin Tabor Twp.

Subj: 1844 letter with many surnames of VA/WV
This letter was written Oct 6, 1844 by John Spencer II of near Patterson
Creek(Cabin Run) Hampshire County VA to his son Arthur Morrison Spencer who
had moved from
VA to Doniphan Co., KS . John Spencer II (m)Sarah Ray abt 1791 Arthur
M.Spencer was a grandson of John Spencer I and wife Joice who purchased land
in Hampshire Co VA in 1778 (d)1796.(Cabin Run & George's Run) Arthur moved to
Ross Co., OH 1835, to MO 1846 and to Ks Territory March 21, 1851. He had
married Katherine Lease (Lees) in VA in 1819. Their children: John Harrison
Spencer; Elisha Ashton Spencer; Isaac Spencer; Arthur Spencer Jr; Charitie
Spencer and Wm Lambert Spencer. Will share any info I have on the John
Spencer=Joice family of Hampshire, VA In the interest of shortness I have
eliminated unnecessary paragraphs and
material.
LETTER: (From a copy I received from a descendant)
Dear Son Arthur and Katherine and all the rest..We rec'd your ltr and read it
with
great attention. We rejoice to hear you are well and doing so well. We two
are in tolerable state of health and so are all our neighbors at present.
I will begin with the death of old Sam Cockeral, Jacob Miller, Jacob Fleak,
George Weice, both Ben Parker and wife, Isaac Hollenback & his wife, old Mr.
Rinehart &
his wife. Also your sister, Julyan Miller died about 4 yrs ago and her
daughter Sally both within a week. Her husband Pete Miller is married to
Betsy Rough, daughter of old George Weice. She was a widow.
You asked abt your sister Ruth and Thomas Shoff. We have not heard from her in
a long time. Maybe you can find her. I understand they are living in
Holkholkin (?) County, Logan Tnship. In or near there lives Thomas'brother
Otho Shoff. It is abt
43 miles from your house in east direction. We would like to hear if you
visit them.
Another melancholy case is your brother, Otho H. Spencer who married Mary
Jane Bailey and they had a daughter. His wife lived only 14 days and left the
child to be raised by her mother. Poor Otho is not married yet. She (d) last
April a year ago ...1843. Otho works about among the Fleaks. He wrote saying
he may come to see you. Old William Leas, Katherine's father who lives here
is well and hearty. He peddles store goods and does pretty good. Old John
Lambert and Aunt Kate are both well. Kate has got to be husky and fat and
looks well. I almost forgot Julyan Fleak was married to Nicholas
Ravengirot(Ravencroft?) a widower. She had one
daughter and then died last March...child is alive. Old Mr. Randle and wife
are alive and sold their place to Bizeer and are living in Isaac Fleeks old
house at Ansill's Gap. Old Mr. Dobbins and wife and family are well but
himself...he was attacked
about 5 years ago with bone cancer about the left eye and it has eaten
through the first plate of his skull and he has lost the sight of his eye and
in great pain day and night. Doctor says he cannot live much longer. Your old
landlord Mr Ward sold his place and moved to Joh Stewad's place on the
mountain and rents there as he sold his place to the same Mr. Bizer.
We are all well and hearty but myself. My health is not good and afraid it
never will
be. I am living on father's old home oplace and have 8 children doing as good
as I am. Would be glad to see you and live near you but we are old and feeble
and we cannot get there. Times are so hard in this county that a poor man can
hardly live here. You say our picture looks old. We do not look so old but
our heads are as white as snow and your sister Alyse hair is as white as
snow. I can walk pretty smart and without stooping and can best all the boys
around here shooting. Your mother is much troubled with pain in her limbs but
is fat and weighs 250 lbs... Your sister Nancy Fleak weighs 260 lbs...Your
sister Rachel weighs 200 lbs. Your old uncle James Spencer is dead and his
land sold and everything else and the family squandered the money. I paid off
Abraham Rhinhart in full.
Henry and Nancy Fleak send their best wishes. I rec'd a letter from them dtd
last
August 18 and they were well at that writing. He says he has raised abt 275
bushels of wheat.
Son, keep a sturdy mind. Your father and mother have had 16 children and
there is
not a bad one in them all. Your mother send her best love.

Fellow Researchers,
Johnson J. was married to Mary Jane. His mother was Mary Ann Boots.
The census records for Johnson J. only show initials rather than names.
I am in the process of finding out all the names. We do know that
William is his oldest son. A younger son, James, died early. I am
unsure of the other names but as I said I will figure them out. The
deeds were obtained in the Bullitt County, Ky. Courthouse.

Good Day,
Almost every day we are getting new subscribers. I would like to take
this time to welcome our new members. New and old members are invited
to post inquires.
I have some information on Johnston J. Cockrell and his family. I
recently obtained a deed dated Sept. 16, 1868. In this deed Mary Ann (
his mother) is turning control of her property to her eldest son Matthew
J. Cockrell. He is required to (take care) of her and the youngest son
James. In this deed we get her maiden name. The document states that
she had recieved son property from her brother, William Boots. For
those that may be researching the Cockrell family in Simpson, Allen and
Bullitt Counties in Kentucky you may find this information of some
interest.

Help please, does anyone know who the parents of Francis Adaline Cockrell,
b-10 Jun 1857, Smith Co., Miss. She married William J. Stewart, b-10 nov
1851, also in Smith County. One of their children was John Wiley Stewart
b-13 oct 1877 in La.
Francis dead 5 Feb 1921.
Thanking you in advance.
Good Day,
As many of you Francis Marion Cockrell researchers are aware he married
Anna Mann. Yesterday I found her grave in Mercer County, Ky. and will
have pictures of the stone available soon. They of course, we be made
available to you.
She is buried just outside Harrodsburg, Ky. in what was once called the
Mud Meeting House. A historical maker is at the enterance. It is a very
nice graveyard and well maintained. The meeting house was first in
existence in 1719.
The area was settled by the Dutch and the farms in the area reflect the
Dutch influence.
Anna is buried next to Major J.J. Mann and his wife Letitia.
If anyone has any information on the Mann family please pass it on.
There were many more Mann graves in the area. It can only help in your
research.

I am trying to find out which Cockrell family Logan Cockrell belongs to. In
the 1910 census of Miami County Kansas, he was listed with my grandfather
John Henry Kilgore. Does anyone know who his parents were? If anyone wants
information from Cockrell soundex of 1910 Kansas I copied them all.
