Hello Cockrell Cousins,
The new LDS web site is now up and running. It is located at <www.familysearch.org>.
You will note that they have a statement saying that the site is a test
site and will be on-line, off and on. So, if you don't get it the first
time, keep trying. Also, it may be wise to make favorable comments about
the site since they have previously stated that the future of the site
depends on use. However, I don't think the question of use will be a
problem once the word spreads that the site is on-line.
Warm regards,
James Cockrell

Fellow Researchers,
Our membership numbers are rapidly increasing. As the list-manager I
would like to personally welcome you to the group. Our list is a very
informal list where ALL inquires are respected and attempts will be made
to give the requestor the best information available.
You are invited to provide your main area of interest to the list. If
you do make an inquiry it is requested that you provide any dates,
places as well as names. We realize that you may have limited
information but be as specific as possible.
Again welcome to the group. The COCKRELL-L has a membership list
approaching 125 members. The group is here to assist you in your

Hello,
I have The Ancestry Family Historian's Address Book on a shelf above the
computer. I will look up addresses for Historical Societies, Genealogical
Societies, Vital Records, LDS Family History Centers and Newspaper
Repositories from the book to help anyone who would like to write to these
places.
I also have the Book by William Dollarhide and Ron Bremer here somewhere that
lists other addresses. I cannot promise how fast I can find that since I have
just rearranged my computer room.
It is not always a good thing to some people to go to cemeteries. I could not
do it in January of any year. And there are the folks who are wanting
information not local to them. Usually I am talking about doing local
research and my research trips are of about an hour or so travel time.
When I say that I visit the Missouri property of Rev. Simon Cockrell it is
because it is just 20 minutes from my house. I cannot afford to visit the
property where the family lived in Virginia. I do have some vacation pictures
taken by cousins who have visited the area and thus have a feel of what it
might be like to go there. I cannot get to Kentucky any time in the near
future either.
I picked up an interest in places locally connected to my family when I was
shopping one day in a quaint little country store and my Aunt informed me it
had once been the home of someone in the family. That got my interest quick
and I wanted to be able to tell this sort of thing to my grandchildren
someday. I know how I felt when I heard about the little shop and I want to
pass that on to the grandchildren.
However cemeteries are something different. Not everyone likes those places
and I do understand this sort of thinking as I myself once felt this way too.
They do often contain the dates of birth and death that we cannot locate any
other way. So I offer to look up these addresses for you.
I cannot make long answers if there are many requests but I will send
addresses.
Bella
Hello,
Well, it is warming up in many places and the year may not start out wet. So
we can get around better than we did in the winter.
I am planning to get out to some cemeteries before the Memorial Day holiday.
This way I can stop in and see the sexton and gather some dates and places.
Lots of times the caretaker or sexton at the cemetery has records about the
people buried there. Mostly this information is collected for billing and
obituary purposes. I have managed to get full dates of death and birth from
the records there. Especially when the stone only gives years. Other times I
have managed to get the names of other relatives for some reason or other.
Only this is never possible on Memorial Day. The place is too busy for one
thing. However Memorial Day is a good time to learn other things about the
deceased. If I go with a relative some stories about events in the life will
just end up in the conversation some way. People are getting used to me
taking notes when they talk now.
Planning is the key to a good trip anywhere. I take along copies of my family
group sheets and compare notes or just hand them out. Every once in a while I
get feed back or corrections that help me find the next clue. I leave a copy
with the cemetery so that others will be able to find some information at a
later date. Some welcome this and others do not. Still it pays to be
prepared.
Cemeteries and graveyards are interesting places. I just learned about the
graveyard where Hannah Fitzgerald, widow of Morgan Cockrell is buried. The
property was owned by her son Alexander Cockrell until 1894. The deed is how
I located the graveyard. The people who own it now have buffalo on the
property. Not as cattle but as a protected species. The genealogical society
helped out a good deal. I learned that some of the records have been misfiled
and more information has turned up. Seems like a good reason for the delay in
a response. The nice folks who volunteer at those places do not have to
apologize or excuse themselves to me.
Anyway the graveyard in this case had no name in their records until some
digging prompted by my pointing out the Section, Township and Range of the
place turned up a name. It is the Garton-Dean burying ground in Jefferson
County, Missouri. I have asked the volunteers to take snapshots. They are
going anyway to read the stones.
Perhaps some careful planning will give me a chance to visit her grave after
all of this time.
Women are sometimes more of a challenge to research than men. More often
women change their name. When a man married he does not change his name but a
woman does. If she is young enough when he dies she is very likely to
remarry. Then good luck finding her. It was good luck that located this
lady.
I have been organizing my notebooks again. So much has been added to the files
that it all needed catching up. I am planning to attend the Cockrell-West
family reunion this year and I want to be more prepared than I was for the one
in Freeman, Missouri.
I will be back over at the Old Bethel Cemetery at the time of the reunion and
getting better pictures of those headstones. My notes show that Joel Cockrell
has a headstone very near Morgan Cockrell. All my note says is that there is
a tree on his stone. I am planning to gather up anything I can get on his
life. I suspect that he could be the son of Morgan Cockrell by his first wife
Disey. Perhaps I will find some more clues about her along the way.
One last thing about headstones -- if you have a tough time reading the stone
then a rubbing may be the only way to get the information off of it. When you
plan the trip take along large sheets of paper and a roll of tape. Charcoal
is best but sidewalk chalk will work. After you get the rubbing outline the
letters and numbers so they will show up on a Xerox copy. A copy will outlast
a rubbing unless you take special care of it.
Happy planning for best results in what ever research project you plan for
yourself and the family. I hope to see what you find posted on COCKRELL-L
anytime you get it worked out.

Hello Fellow Researchers,
This was the first Cockrell I felt that I had to research. To begin with
things were getting mixed up about who was actually Simon Cockrell, Sr., who
was Simon Cockrell, Jr.
The answer is not simple. Rev. Simon Cockrell is the one I wanted most but he
had a son Simon Cockrell who was referred to as Simon Cockrell, Jr., Virginia.
Virginia deed records told me that a certain section of land in Russell
County, Virginia was sold by Simon Cockrell and his wife Magdaline to Simon
Cockrell, Jr. This property was well developed with an Island and a fish
trap. This same document dated 23 APR 1806 proved that Rev. Simon Cockrell
moved from Russell County, Virginia to Montgomery County, Kentucky where he is
in the 1810 census.
The other thing found was a deed dated 1 OCT 1844 From Simon Cockrell, Sr.,
his wife Polly of Breathitt County, Kentucky sold this same piece of property
to one William Richmond of Scott County, Virginia at a marvelous profit. The
witnesses were John Hargis and Elisha S. Cockrell.
>From the description of the property and the way the names are stated this
could be quite confusing if these deeds were read together. I suspect that
the early researchers may have done just this. One of the living researchers
has even asked me if Rev. Simon Cockrell remarried. Any one reading just the
indexes and even these excerpted notes could remain confused. More research
has been done and this much has been sorted out. These deeds and the names of
the wives became combined and the result has been that the family now refers
to the wife of Rev. Simon Cockrell as Mary Magdaline when in fact Mary is the
wife of Simon Cockrell, Jr., Magdaline is the wife of Rev. Simon Cockrell the
noted Baptist minister.
It is at this point we understand that we are talking about Simon Cockrell,
Jr., Virginia who is the same as Simon Cockrell, Sr. of Kentucky. We now know
that if the 1820 census for Missouri were not destroyed it would contain the
name of Simon Cockrell. He was an elected Legislator in Missouri in 1822 and
purchased 80 acres at Liberty Bend in Clay County, Missouri. He sold this in
1834 to John Marr.
Simon Cockrell, Sr. born 1772 in Botetourt County, Virginia married first on
July 17, 1786, in Wythe County, Virginia to (name blurred) and their son was
Joseph Cockrell born 1894 in Virginia

Hello Fellow Researchers,
This is the eldest son of Rev. Simon Cockrell and Mary Magdalene Vardeman.
Moses Cockrell happens to be the first Cockrell I ever found in a book. Long
before I had a computer and I was making Family Group Sheets out in long hand
and writing up Pedigree Charts in six generations.

the rest of the descendants for me since I sent her the information on the

information and seems to have forgotten me. I have a file marked MT Promises.
However we can use what she did send and be very grateful to have it.

Our thanks to the many contributors to this file. Especially to Lilace
Hamilton for gathering the court records on Moses Cockrell/Cottrell on her
vacation in Virginia. Also to Kay Kazmir for having this portion of the family
in her Cockrell Connections. We shall miss Wilson Crook who did so much
research on this line before his passing in 1995. Pam Potter for the repeat
information teaching me that I am not the only one to find things. And all
the great questions like, "are you sure this fits in Bella?" from the list.
Keep on reading and sharing it is a family thing.

Hello Fellow Researchers,
I guess you are all rolling in the floor laughing and really having fun
noticing that I posted the birth state of Morgan as Missouri. We all know
that he was born in Virginia and I typed it wrong.
I decided to post this correction to the list since I have had a few phone
calls, emails and a letter about this. Who sent the copy of the email to
someone not on the Internet beats me but it happens. After all we do share
information.
My apologies to all and my respect for your intelligence. I know that you are
too smart for that kind of dumb mistake. I am sorry and will probably make a
mistake again but wish on my birthday cake that it will not happen.
Another post another time.
