Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The Political Graveyard Website:
http://politicalgraveyard.com/plfamily.html
lists burial locations of politicians, and lots of interesting data and
catagories. There is a category of political familes (ie politicians who
are related by blood or marriage). The South-Cockrell-Morrow family is
now tied for fourth place for most number of relatives, above even the
Kennedys and the Tafts). I have submitted the following ones to be
added, which will put us into 2nd place:
Rev Simon Cockrell - Va House of Delegates
Moses Cockrell - Va House of Del.
Gen John South - KY Leg.
T P Cardwell (son-in-law of Jere South and Kitty Cockrell) KY Leg.
I N Cardwell - KY Leg.
Judge T F Hargis (father-in-law of Jerry Curtis South) - KY Leg.
John Louis Hargis - KY Leg.
Alex Hargis - KY Leg.
John Seldon Hargis - KY Leg.
If anyone can think of any other family politicians (or some
relationships which aren't noted at the website) please submit them (or
send them to me and I will). They must be on a state level; things like
Sheriffs and Co Judges won't qualify, otherwise I could add Judge Big
Jim Hargis and Sheriff Ed Callahan, who would fit nicely into the
"Politicians who were murdered" catagory.
Anyway, when the above are added, our family will be in the number 2
spot, only behind the Breckinridge-Clay-Preston family. Not much chance
of catching them, unless I get elected Governor and marry Martha Clay.
Hmmmmmm ..................
Does anyone on the Cockrell list know anything about Thomas Shelton Cockrell
and his wife, Nancy Veale. This couple lived in Fayette County. What I need
are the names of their children, and if possible, who each of them married.
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Tom Cockerel has asked that I take over ownership of the Cockrell list
server while he is in the hospital and I am now trying to make this transfer,
but am having some difficulty.

You have sent your message to Tom Green, not Tom Cockerel. Sorry but I do
not know Tom's address nor which hospital he is in, however his son, Joe's
E-Mail address is KYGENE(a)aol.com according to the message he posted on the
list about his father's health. His phone number is (847) 681-0849, and his
mother's phone number is (502) 957-1343.

Hi Joe,
I am very sorry to hear about the health of your father, and I hope he will
recover soon. Your father and I met by E-Mail some years ago, and I talked
him into starting the COCKRELL list. He told me that his health was not good
at that time, and he did not want to start the list, but because of his
sincere interest in our family history, he has devoted a lot of his time to
helping all of us. I wish I have the time to take the list over, but I just
can't do so, but I am sure some one will come forward to help out.
Please give your Dad my very best!
Tom Green
Hello Cousins,
My name is Joe Cockerel. I am the son of Tom Cockerel the person who
runs the list. Unfortunately, my dad is quite sick and has been for the
past couple of months. For the past 5 weeks he has been in the hospital
and is expected to be there for the next 2 or 3 months where he is
expected to recover. This means we are without a list owner till then. I
am currently in the navy or I would help out and do it while he is in
the hospital. So what we need is for someone to step forward and take
the helm so to speak. Please help us out of this jam. My mother can be
contacted at (502)957-1343 and I can be contacted at (847)681-0849 for
any questions concerning the list or about my dad. Currently I am at my
parents house but shall be returning home on the 19th of december for
any questions. My mom does not check email but mine is KYGENE(a)aol.com.
Thanks,
Joe
Cockerel
Have you tried Jim Burgess' Cockerill genealogy web pages?
I can't find his URL at the moment but I'll bet someone out there has it.

<< I heard from Rayford Cockerell that there is a web page for Cockerell's.
I was wondering if he was referring to you. I am interested in the lineage

up to date. Talk with you later. Perry Cockerell >>
Hi Perry,
Rayford may have been talking about the Web Page of Tom Cockerel, who is the
owner of the COCKRELL "list" that we all post our information on. Have you
subscribed to this "list"? If not you might want to as this is where I got
the info on the father of our John Cockrell. I have not been able to find
any proof, but Jack Olson, the cousin of Tom Cockerel provided me with the
next three generations. Most of the people on the "list" are researching Rev.
Simon Cockrell, but there are some of "our" cousins on the list also.
Just in case you have not seen this info, Jack says that the parents of our
John Cockrell, born about 1756, were Thomas Cockrell, born about 1720 in York
County, Virginia, his wife Elizabeth Last Name Unknown. The only fact I have
seen about this Thomas Cockrell is that he sold land to Bryan Benson in 1742.
His father is believed to have been Samuel Cockerill, born about 1671, and
died in York County, Virginia. His wife was also named Elizabeth with no
last name known. This MAY have been the Samuel Cockerill that got in trouble
with his neighbors about stealing the hogs. Samuel's parents are believed to
have been Thomas Cockerill who was born about 1624 who was transported to
America in 1650 from England. He may have received a "headright" of land
from Lt. Col. Robert Abrall in 1658, and was mentioned in the estate
documents of John Fleete in 1667.
I have done a little research in York County, Va. but have not been able to
confirm any of the above info, however, Jack and Tom are great researchers,
and I am sure they have found what documentation that is available to lead
them to these conclusions.
Sorry I missed the family reunion last August, and hope to make the one in
the year 2000. Hope you and your family have a great holiday season, and
tell Rayford hello for me.
Best Regards,
Tom Green
