Does anyone have any information on the above mentioned Cockrill (also spelled
Cockerell)? Believe he was married to Daisy Stice in Kansas before 1890.
1911 Yakima Washington register lists Daisy as widow of Eugene. There were
four children from this union.
Thank you for any assistance. This is one that I placed on the net almost 18
months ago, but only knew the last name. Hope with the new information, it
will be the clue that can add some light.

Hello Marilyn,
Yes this could be another spelling. First though are you looking at this from
the index version or the microfilm one?
An Index version is the printed guess of an author. Bless those workers for
the trouble and time they devoted to the cause.
The microfilm version is always in longhand. Not the soundex but the actual
census. There it will be written as heard. That is why it is a possible
spelling. Rarely did the family have any control over how the name was
entered by a given enumerator.
Next check an Index for a deed of the land shown in Real Estate for this
census. The name will have been spelled by the family and then read by the
people making the index. That should narrow it down a bit. If that still
seems distorted to you then look at the actual deed.
I have had fair to good luck getting Historical Societies to do the legwork
here. I send them a copy of my family line for their files and they do what
they can and normally for the simple expense of copies.
As for why they moved that will be in the land records too. I think the
migratory patterns were controlled by the desire for more or better land. For
example the land may have been earned through military service. Once the land
was looked over it was found unsuitable. The land would then be sold to the
best buyer and the cash could then be used to obtain land more desirable.
This may not be the exact answer for you but a suggestion for why they moved.
Any other theories out there to help Marilyn find the family?

Hello Fellow Researchers,
The subject of this post is Rev. Simon Cockrell born ca. 1746 died about 1843.
He was born in Virginia and died in Van Buren County, now Cass County,
Missouri. His wife was Magdaline Vardeman born ca. 1744 in Bedford County,
Virginia died about 1843 in Van Buren County, Missouri.
This is the place to begin.

family newsletter. Each one adds a bit of a letter and forwards it on to the
next Cockrell family. It contains some great family interviews. This type of
newsletter was popular then and it is a privilege to be able to use it in this
research.

later found by Irvin W. Cockriel in August of 1976. Since this was written
many of the connections have been proven incorrect. However it may be

Hope the holidays were good to everyone. Now that they're over why don't we
start posting to the list again. Have any of your who volunteered for the
regional team research project got anything to post. If so, why don't you
post your findings and lets start working on those connections.

Hello Fellow Researchers,
A New Year has come and looking back at the years of research done on this
surname by myself and so many others both on this list and not, I plan to
review what has been learned about The Rev. Simon Cockrell 1746 - 1843. Then
the next thing to cover each of his twelve children. I say twelve since
nothing has ever turned up on Celia Cockrell and husband William Callahan. It
may be an unkind thing to say but sometimes I think that Francis Marion was
trying to make family connections for political gain. Anyway this family has
not surfaced based on any of the notes in any of the early Cockrell Family
History books that contain this family.
There certainly is more to the story of the Rev. Simon Cockrell and this
includes more than I have been able to uncover. This is one reason for me to
list what I do know about him. I also have much documented information on the
Vardeman family and the transcribed Will of Thomas Morgan. Elizabeth Morgan
was one of 17 children. She was one of the elder children if the listing has
anything to do with order of birth. I doubt it but my list is based on who
came first in the list of heirs.
The children of Simon Cockrell and Magdaline Vardeman Cockrell do have a sort
of order of birth based on any clue I found for an age on the child. Usually
this was census and the person gave an age they wanted to. Some way I would
prefer to think of them as honest until proven otherwise. And there is some
heavy conflict of information in some of these family records. Along the way
I would like to have your input on the list and join me in resolving some of
these conflicts. Not so much as a chat room debate but as a list we can take
the time to read some sources before making a reply.
Since there is obviously more than one Simon Cockrell I will use Rev. Simon
Cockrell 1746-1843 as an identifier. I hope that the other Simon Cockrells
will try to do the same. For example there is a North Carolina Simon Cockrell
but I don't have much detail on him. Rev. Simon Cockrell had a son Simon
Cockrell of Breathitt County, Kentucky. Based on a Russell County, Virginia
Deed record I call him Simon Cockrell, Jr. but a better name needs to be found
for him. The reason being the deed records that label him Simon Cockrell, Sr.
The other material might suggest he was "Cussin' Simon Cockrell" for that
infamous moment when he lost his temper in court or attended the Baptism of a
neighbor. My meaning is to simply try to create some harmony on the list for
sharing our various families.
I have an interesting story from the Johnson County, Missouri Historical
Society about mixing up the Morgan Cockrell's. It is so easy to forget that
another line might be traced to my favorite spots with the same name.
Especially when I was not truly aware that another Morgan Cockrell would have
been in Johnson County, Missouri at all.
First of all the Morgan Cockrell of Johnson County, Missouri had a full life
before he ever came to Missouri. He was born in Virginia about 1788 and died
in Johnson County, Missouri on June 25, 1843. He was the Uncle of General and
US Senator Francis Marion Cockrell. He married Hannah Andrews on February 3,
1833. A trip to Warrensburg, MO always means a visit to the Johnson County
Historical Society. Cousin Bill Ballew was with me and when we had heard that
someone had said that Morgan Cockrell was a scoundrel. Well, this had my
interest because if he did anything in life it was not something I had any
record of so I wanted to locates the facts behind such a statement. Only the
day that Bill and I were there nothing about this was ever uncovered.
Later when searching out Hannah Andrews death and residence after Johnson
County, Missouri it came up that she had a grandson by the name of Morgan
Cockrell. Within the documents about him was the story of the murder of
George Cockrell by his brother Morgan Cockrell. I know that I posted those
stories from the newspaper articles last year when I found them. I realize
now that the grandson Morgan Cockrell was born in Johnson County, Missouri and
anyone researching his line would make queries at the Johnson County
Historical Society. This would easily explain such a comment. Even though
the result of my curiosity was just another line of Cockrells and not
something about my direct ancestor Morgan Cockrell it was good to chase down
the rumor.
Another interesting item about the family of Rev. Simon Cockrell is the name
of his wife. It has come to my attention that the Simon Cockrell of Breathitt
and the Rev. Simon Cockrell were doing business in the same courts in Virginia
especially. This would mean that in some deeds the names would be Simon
Cockrell and his wife Mary and other records would be Simon Cockrell and his
wife Magdaline. Likely as not back in the 1890 research of Cockrell Families
these deeds were guessed to be for the same man. Today we realize the
difference. This will explain the combining of Mary and Magdaline for the
name of the wife of the Rev. Simon Cockrell and how it remains in the family
histories all of these years. Should we then continue to use the combined
names? So far the Vardeman Family history names her Magdaline Vardeman
Cockrell. They changed when I sent information.
So there does exist controversy in the family history and I hope that with the
help of you fellow researchers to be able to resolve these issues so that we
can go on to the next generation back in time Thomas Cockrell and his wife
Deborah of Frederick County, Virginia and Prince William County, Virginia.
I have been thinking about only posting these reports once a week so anyone
can have some time to get in a reply for that topic for the week. I so plan
to cover the grandchildren of the Rev. Simon Cockrell as I have them so the
newer members will be able to make real connections and share what I have on
those families.
I hope that each reply will be made to the list. Otherwise I shall forward
them to the list myself. The idea is to share all information on any subject
with every member of the list making it a group discussion and fact finding
exercise.
In parting it is pertinent to add that the Alexander Cockrell controversy has
been resolved. This will come out in one of the issues of the Cockrell
Connections by Kay Kazmir sometime after year end taxes.
Food for thought folks and a chance to get this thing ready for publication.
That is after all the final step toward a good project and the thrill of
seeing our names in print. I like the credits lines better than the list part
where I am 7th generation and listed in the back of the book with a page
number. That is where I am in the Hines Family History.
That's all for now cousins and friends.
Bella
I'm not certain how relevant this may be, or of how much interest, but it does
seem to be a possible derivative of Cockrell, etc. The Obituary appeared in
the Friday, January 1, 1999, Huntsville (AL) Times.
