Hi again,
I just noticed that I don't show your Martha Ann Cockrell as a daughter of
William Cockrell. I do show a Julia Ann Cockrell born 1844, married to John
D. Pridgen, and Julia Ann Cockrell is shown as the daughter of William
Cockrell (1817-1941) who married Mary Elbert Sutton born 1827. I do show that
this William Cockrell was the son of Joseph Jacob Cockrell. Can you correct
any of these dates and names I have?

Hello,
This came in but not to the list. This will be the mother of Major John
Cockrill Jr. of Tennessee. I am trading my information so he can collect
clues and if any others are working on this or not please consider this
request. By combining all clues from our seperate collections someone could
get the information and we would all benefit. Mr. Hamilton may consider the
list an option for assistance. It would be nice to pick this up where the
early researchers left off and define this just as the MOSS/COCKRELL line did.
See below.
Any help out there?

Dear Ms. Hughes -- I am doing genealogical research on my ancestors,
and I was given your name as someone whom might have information on one
of my ancestors.
The person in question in Barbara Fox, who married (lst) John
Cockrill, (2nd) David Collinsworth, and (3rd) a Mr. Kells. She is my
4-great grandmother, twice. That is, I descend from both her son John
Cockrill Jr. and her son Edmund Fox Collisnworth. The former's son,
Mark Robertson Cockrill, married the latter's daughter, Susan
Collinsworth. They became my 2-great grandparents. My line comes down
through their youngest child, Henrietta Cockrill, who married Albert
Gallatin Ewing. Their daughter, Milbrey Williams Ewing, was my
grandmother.
Being that I am doubly descended from her, I am quite interested in
Barbara Fox, but she is proving to be quite elusive an ancestor to
trace. I know that her first born was John Cockrill, Jr, and that he
was born in December, 1757 in Richmond County, VA. Apparently her first
husband died at about that time, as she was soon remarried to David
Collinsworth. She had several children by him, but he too was dead by
1773 (according to a testament left by John Cockrill Jr). I have been
told that the records of the Mill Creek Baptist Church in Antioch, TN
(close to where she lived with her son, Edmund Collinsworth) show that
Barbara Kells was a participating member as late as 1804.
That much I know. I am aware of published information that claims
that she was the daughter of Henry and Anne West Fox, but I believe that
this is demonstrably false. (There is an outside chance that she could
be their granddaughter, but I have not been able to uncover any evidence
that she was.) I have seen references that she was related to the
Allisons and Dangerfields, but I have found no evidence of this, either.
I have also seen references that she was from a "prominent" Tidewater
family, and there were several Fox families (probably all generally
related) in Colonial Virginia, but again, I have been unsuccessful in
finding any reference to her in any of them.
Similarly, I have had little luck learning much about any of her
husbands. Some sources claim John Cockrill Sr. was a Welsh soldier who
came over with Braddock, survived his fate, and settled in Virginia.
Others claim he was of a Colonial family and that he served in the House
of Burgesses. I can't verify any of this.
David Collinsworth also seems to appear out of nowhere. I can find
some families of that name in Virginia, but so far, I can't place him.
If you have any insight into any of this, I would very much
appreciate you sharing with me. In particular, I am interested in
knowing the sources of any information that you may have.
Thanks in advance for your efforts, Pete Hamilton >>

Hi Shannon,
Piety Pridgen, born about 1788, was the daughter of Drewry(1757-1835) and
Selah Creekmore (1773-1838) Pridgen, and the sister of Elizabeth
(1794-1850)and Selah Pridgen. These three sisters married three Cockrell
brothers. The Joseph Jacob Cockrell (1780-1819) who married Piety Pridgen
(1788-1825) was the brother of Vincent Cockrell (1793-1850) who married
Elizabeth Pridgen, and Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell (1795-1850) who married
Selah Pridgen. Baldy Cockrell is my 2nd great grandfather, and his parents
were John C. Cockrell (CA 1756-1809) who married Nancy Ann Winstead (Born CA
1758; Died June 27, 1837 in Greene County, Alabama).
There is a Pridgen "list" if you haven't found it.
Hope this helps you,
Tom Green

Chandra, You wrote asking for information on Madison Co, MS Cockrells. My
data base contains the following:
Dock Cockrell m. Harriet Milton, Madison Co, MS on 27 Aug 1879.
George Cockrell to Lettitia Dinkins, Madison Co, MS on 18 Dec 1889.
Annie Cockrell to Marshall Dancy, Madison Co, MS on 06 Nov 1893.
These marriages are from Mississippi Marriages, Hunting for Bears, Inc.,
Hammond, LA.
>From the MS Court Records from the Files of High Court of Errors and Appeals
1799-1859, compiled by Mary Louise Flowers Hendris, found at the Clayton
Genealogical Library, Houston, TX, in 1985, I have the following:
1834 Madison Co, MS, Drawer 71, Case #285 - Ira E Hobbs and Benj. W. Macklin
vs. Sterling R. Cockrill, Administrator, Estate of Washington J. Cockrill,
deceased. Washington J. Cockrill of Madison Co, MS married Mary E. Macklin,
daughter of Thos. Macklin of Limestone Co, AL in Dec 1831. Washington J.
Cockrill died 08 Jul 1832 and Mary Macklin Cockrill d. 05 Jul 1832.
Regarding Parchman, my Collier's Encyclopedia, published in 1978, says, "
The MS penitentiary, located at Parchman, consists mainly of camps
surrounded by cotton fields and other facilities designed to make it as
self-supporting as possible." Parchman must be very small because it does
not appear on the map included.
I do have further marriages in surrounding counties like Rankin, Hinds,
Yazoo but none as late as the time period you are searching for. Hope that
this information helps some.

Hello to the Cockrell researchers:
I need a little assistance, if some of you would be so kind.
Does anyone have any information on the following individuals (they were in
MS in 1917-1918, and WWI registrants, in the counties noted):
Cockrell, Will b. 1873 : In 1917-1918, he registered in Calhoun County.
Cockrell, Dock, b. Dec 28 1894, registered from Madison County, but was in
prison somewhere in Parchman MS (where is this, does anyone know?).
Cockerel, Ed, b. 1900, he registered from Warren County.
I don't have any more information other than that which is noted. Do any of
them ring a bell to anyone out there? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks much!

Hello to the members of Cockrell group,
Have noticed that Cockrells, et al came from various areas in MS and other
states. Am wondering if there were any of the Cockrell lines out of Madison
County Mississippi?
Thanks for any info available.

Hello everyone,
I am posting the answer to the list because several people have asked
for it. I can answer all of you at once this way.
Boss Cockerell is the son of Howard C. Cockerell, son of William Henry
Cockerell, and Fannie Henderson. He is a half brother to my grandfather. His
real name is Virgel Cockerell. He always went by Boss, though. It is even on
his death certificate and tombstone.
I will paste an outline that gives his relationship to the others. If you
have any questions, just ask.

Does anyone have any information on Mary Elizabeth Cockrell Rouswell.
She was born March 15, 1842, possibly in Arkansas, died March 25, 1940
in Seymour, Texas. Believe husband's name was Simon B. Rouswell,
don't know the marriage date. Father's name as given on Mary
Elizabeth's death certificate filed in Baylor County courthouse was Si
Cockrell, mother's name unknown. Mary Elizabeth and Simon B.
separated after the children were grown. She lived in Seymour, Texas,
and he moved to Olney, Young County, Texas where he lived with his
daughter Sally until his death and burial in Olney. Mary Elizabeth is
buried in the Round Timber cemetery, Baylor County. Mary E.'s
spinning wheel was bought by the Home Demonstration Club for $5 and
donated to the Baylor County library. When they ran short of room, it
was loaned to the Baylor County Museum where it is now on display.
The children were: Sarah F. (Sally) Rouswell, b. October 16, 1868, m.
Jim Abbott;
John Rouswell, b. 1873, m. Susan C. Parker; Nancy Rouswell, b. 1875,
m. ? Spruell;
Josephine Rouswell, b. November 14, 1876, d. 1957, m. George W.
Cooper;
Isaac Rouswell, b. June 15, 1879, d. February 15, 1962 in Colorado, m.
Laura ?;
Lucy Belle Rouswell, b. May 10, 1881 in San Saba, TX; d. September 5,
1968 in Seymour, TX;
m. Benjamin Merritt Stennett (This is my husband's grandparents);
Alice Rouswell, b. April 17, 1884, d. June 5, 1947, m. Dalton Stennett
(brother of Benjamin M.)
Lee Rouswell (died young, nothing known about him).
I was researching my Cockerell line (Sarah Frances Cockerell Williams,
Archibald Cockerell, "Baldy", John, etc.) when I learned that my
husband was descended from this Mary Elizabeth Cockrell. I am now
trying to see if, and where, the two Cockrell lines converge in our
ancestry.
Any help would be appreciated. Genealogy is fun and full of
surprises!
In looking through the Cockrell List archives for 1997, I came across
a mention of Cockrells who had moved to Westover, Texas. I live about
20 miles from there and have a cemetery book that lists all cemeteries
in Archer County and some in surrounding counties of Wilbarger,
Wichita, Clay, Young, Throckmorton and Baylor from 1837 to 1994.
These include the communities of Beaver Creek, White Hill, Deer Creek,
Spring Creek, Round Timber and Westover. The information was compiled
by Jack and Marie Loftin. I also have a complete cemetery census for
Jack County, Texas from 1855 to 1994 including borders of surrounding
counties Young, Palo Pinto, Parker, Wise, Montague and Clay. This
book was compiled by Avis Radford and Jack Loftin and both books
include isolated graves. If anyone is interested in any information
that might be available in these books, I will be glad to look it up
for them.

Disregard earlier message. I got disconnected. Below is what I found in the
1850 Bates County, Missouri census. I am seeking confirmation. All of these
cockrells were found on pages 247 and 248. First, William Anderson Cockrell
b-1778 NC. (son of William Cockrell and Francis Jones). Listed with him are
his wife Rebecca in this 1850 census and his age listed as 70, b-NC. Rebecca
age 65 also b-NC. Listed with him are James Cockrell, age 37 b-Ky; William
age 9, b-Ky and Lucinda age 6, b-Ky. I think that William and Lucinda are the
children of James (somtimes named Joseph in other records).
Pg. 247, listed next to Willaim Anderson is one Harrison Cockrell, age 35, b-
Kentucky. Wife Ruhama(? spelling) age 25, b-Ky. Children: Adaline age 11;
Amanda, age 6; Robert age 5; Morgan age 3; and Mary age 1. Robert, Morgan and
Mary are listed as being born in Mo.
William Cockrell, pg 248, age 45, b-Ky. Wife Eliz. age 36 b-Ohio. Children:
Lucinda, age 15; James age 16; Willis age 14; Thomas age 11 b-Ohio; Jefferson
age 11 (twin) b-Ohio; Mary age 9, b-Mo.; Zachariah age 6 b-Mo.; and George age
3 b- Mo.
pg. 251, Larkin Cockrell, age 40, b-SC. wife Diadana age 40 b-Ky. Children:
Ellesis (f) age 20; Olivia age 18; Thomas age 15; Helen age 13; Elizabeth age
10; Rebecca age 7; Idia? (spelling) age 5; William age 3; and Robert age 1.
Elizabeth through Robert were all born in Mo. and all of the others were born
in Ky.
