Hello,
I finally made it to Rehobath Cemetery. This is what I saw on the
markers there. Everybody has helped me so much in the past. I want to return
the favor.
I hope this helps someone. If you have any queations, please ask.
The cemetery had a lot of broken headstones in it. Most of these are my
direct ancestors or their brothers and sisters. I wish it had been taken
better care of. I was told that blasts from the mining several years ago broke
them off. There are some beautiful monuments there.
Anything in ( ) is my notes to myself. The rest is as I saw it in the
cemetery.

Tom and Sandra,
I seem to get only the Tom side of this conversation and what I am reading is
based in gross error.
First of all I am a proven descendant of Rev. Simon Cockrell and I do not like
to have these errors spread around about my ancestry any longer. I have been
posting every research report every step of the way. I am focused on my
ancestor and do not answer on other lines. Not unless I am asked directly to
do so in exchange for information on my own ancestry.
I had posted queries requesting proof of the Trapling connection. I recently
posted my research report of seven pages regarding the latest group of years
in the life of Rev. Simon Cockrell and the Trapling item was reported.
As you say it is not your family. Why don't you just stick to the area where
your ancestor last resided and spend your energy there.
Yes, I have been told that it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool
than to open my mouth and remove all doubt. I guess you never heard that.

Hi Sandra,
Like you, this is not my line, but I seem to find more details about this line
than mine. I tend to agree with you about two different families. I think
the Ebenezer and Edward Sanders who were administrators of William and Mary
Thomas were the grandchildren of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Presly Saunders.
The other problem is that the John Cockrell, who married Elizabeth Presly
Saunders, was the son of John and Hannah Coles, and not Andrew Cockrell. The
Andrew Cockrell we have info on married Angell Corbell, and their son John
Cockrell, born September 5, 1680, married Lucretia Neale, daughter of Daniel
Neale. Their son Thomas Cockrell had a son John who married Susan Trapling
and they were the parents of Rev. Simon Cockrell. You might want to contact
Kay Cockrell Kazmir, as she is far more knowledgable of this family than I.
I will have to get home this weekend and see how your data fits with what I
have in my computer software.

I am searching for any connections to Charles Cockrell b. abt 1890 m. Willie Conrad abt 1914 in MS. I am hoping he is the same Charles Cockrell that registered for WWI in 1917-18 in Warren Co., MS but I have no proof at this time. Thank you, Jo-Ann Stephens, bahai(a)netusa1.net
Tom, Isabel Gough who is probably the current authority on the John Cockrell
line sent me the following some years ago.
John and Hannah (possibly Coles) Cockrell had the following children: John,
b. 22 Nov 1669; Eliza, b. 21 Nov 1671; Edward, b. 29 Dec 1674; Hannah, b. 20
Feb 1680; and Richard, b. 03 Dec 1683 (complete article is in Volume 2,
Issue 3 of The Cockrell Connection.). John, son of John and Hannah, married
Elizabeth (Presly) Saunders, the widow of Ebenezer Saunders. With Saunders
she had two children--Edward Saunders and Elizabeth Saunders who married 1)
Samuel Downing and 2) Charles Nelms. John died in 1714 and his estate was
administered by his wife. Their children were listed in Elizabeth's will,
proved 1719, and are as follows: Willoughby, baptized 1700; Presly,
baptized 10 Dec 1704; Hannah, baptized 1 Dec 1704; Peter, baptized 13 Mar
1700; and John, baptized 10 Dec 1704.
As you can see, Eliza was the daughter of John and Hannah, the parents of
John who married Elizabeth (Presly) Saunders.
Of John and Elizabeth's children, John married Elizabeth (probably Nelms);
Hannah chose Alex Morehead as her guardian and later married him; and Presly
married Susannah Whaley.
There is absolutely no proof that Andrew ever had a brother John.
Furthermore, Isabel believes that Andrew's line was actually Cottrells and
never were truly Cockrells.
While there is some interchange of the last name, particularly from Cockrell
to Cottrell, there were also two very distinct surnames--one being Cottrell
and one being Cockrell. Isabel Gough thinks that Andrew who supposedly came
through Maryland to VA in the 1640's was definitely a Cottrell and never a
Cockrell.
I'm going to get on my favorite soapbox now and say you shouldn't waste time
attempting to connect your line to an immigrant generation so far removed
from your proven ancestor. You have to trace the steps back one at a time
like Bella Hughes is attempting with Simon. I know how hard it is,
particularly for the Carolina lines as so much documentation seems to be
missing, but we just have to keep trying and not waste time trying to prove
something that may have totally no connection with our lines. The waters
have been so muddied for those seventeenth century Cockrells that it is
really going to be difficult to sort them all out.
Hope this helps clear up the Downing/Nelms/Presley/Saunders/Cockrell
connections. I'm sure there are lots more connections within those families
that I didn't get into but this is what you've been trying to sort out.

Hi Sandra,
Thanks for your reply to my posting. I do not have much info on the Sanders
or Dowling families, but do show that Elizabeth Presley, born about 1665, was
married 3 times. She was probably first married to William Thomas who died
about 1684, when his widow was about 19 years old. William Thomas must have
first been married to Mary Last Name Unknown. Your information about her
children and estate don't seem to fit with this senario. How do you fit the
pieces together?
I show that Elizabeth Presley married Ebenezer Saunders, Sr. (Born abt. 1665,
Died abt. 1692). I also show that about 1693, Elizabeth Presley married John
Cockrell, Jr. born November 22, 1669 at Cockrell's Neck in St. Parish, in
Northumberland County, Virginia. I question the marriage date of 1693 since I
also show her their first child, Eliza Cockrell was born November 21, 1671,
but was she really the daughter of Elizabeth Presley Cockrell? Any help or
ideas you have will be welcome.
Another problem I have is that John Cockrell, who married Elizabeth Presley,
was the son of John Cockrell born about 1635, who married Hannah Ashton Cole.
This John Cockrell was the son of John "The Coachman" Cockrell and the brother
of Andrew Cockrell. The information I found recently says that the John
Cockrell who was made a ward of John Downing was a son of Andrew Cockrell, and
this does not seem to fit with what I have just posted. The John Cockrell who
was the son of Andrew Cockrell was born in 1680 and married Lucretia Neale.
This is not my line, but I am attempting to connect my John C. Cockrell who
married Nancy Anne Winstead, with this line, using the theory that all
Cockrells in America descend from John "The Coachman" Cockrell born about 1610
in England and died before 1650 in London. The assumption is that all
Cockrells in America descend from his two sons, John born about 1635, who
married Hannah Cole, and his brother Andrew, born about 1632, who married
Angel Corbell. I have serious doubt this is a correct statement, but those
are the only names we have to research, so tell me what you think?

Hi MiMi,
No, the Simon Cockrell, born December 10, 1751, that we were discussing was
the father of Moses Cockrell, and several others. He was a Virginia
Legislator and later in the first Legislature of Missouri. Simon married Mary
Vardaman, and they had at least 14 children, Moses being one. I show this
Simon was the son of John Cockrell, born about 1740 in Virginia and his wife
Susan Tarpling, but this is not proven. I also show the parents of this John
Cockrell to have been Thomas born 1697 in Westmorland County, Virginia, died
in 1777 in Lowden, Virginia, and his wife Anne Remy Cockrell. I show the
parents of this Thomas Cockrell to have been John, born September 5, 1680 in
Northumberland County, Virginia, who married Lucretia Neale. I show the
parents of this John Cockrell to have been Andrew Cockrell born about 1632 in
England, who married Angel Corgell in 1653 in Virginia (she was the daughter
of Clement and Angel Corbell). This is another family we have been
discussing, as John Dowling was appointed the guardian of John Cockrell, the
son of Andrew Cockrell who I show died about 1674 in St. Stephens Parish of
Northumberland County, Virginia. This John Dowling was indicated to have
married the widow of Andrew Cockrell, but I don't think this is correct. You
may have seen the message from Sandra Perry who said that the wife of John
Dowling was Elizabeth Sanders, and I agree with this opinion. Page 47 of
Volume 25 of the William & Mary Quarterly Magazine states that Elizabeth
Saunders, the daughter of Ebenezer Saunders, was the wife of John Dowling.
The Simon Cockrell, born about 1775, died about 1840, who married Dicey Garner
in Johnson County, North Carolina March 21, 1803, was the son of Thomas and
Tabitha Hatcher. This Thomas Cockrell was probably the brother of John C.
Cockrell, born about 1756 who married Nancy Anne Winstead. This is my direct
Cockrell line as I descend from Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell, the son of John
and Nancy Anne Cockrell.
Thomas Cockrell died in Johnson County, NC in 1799 and his estate settlement
is well documented in the county records. It is believed that the parents of
Thomas and John C. Cockrell were Thomas born about 1720 in York County,
Virginia, and his wife Elizabeth Last Name Unknown. His father was probably
Samuel Cockerill born about 1671, and his father was probably Thomas Cockerill
born in 1624.
I am attempting to connecte the two lines, and would appreciate any info you
might have that might help.

Hi Bella,
Thanks for posting the story of Moses Cockrell. What a great story! The two
letters I found do not tell the story, but do give enough facts so that I
recognize that these documents are related to the story you posted. I love to

Hi Group,
Here are a couple more item I found lately. On page 208 of Volume 20 (printed
in 1912) of the William & Mary Quarterly is info about a prayer book printed
in London in 1676 for Thomas Cockerill. The prayer book was entitled, "A
Supplement to the Morning Exercise" and described as, "Several more cafes of
Confcience Practically Refolved by fundry Ministers." Remember they used the
letter "f" in place of the letter "s" in those days. That will make it easier
to read the sentence.
This book was printed for Thomas Cockerill at the sign of The Atlas, in
Cornhil, near The Royal Exchange, MCDLXXVI, and was purchased by Robinson
Nelson in 1842. The book was owned by William Robins in 1911 when this
article was published. Anyone know who this Thomas Cockerill was? Was he
John the Coachman?
Another bit of info that might interest some of you is located on page 47 of
Volume 2 of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. The info is a
list of Virginia soldiers in the French Indian War in 1756. John Cockeril is
listed as 30 years old, and 5 feet 10 inches tall, a planter from Virginia who
enlisted in Richmond on October 8, 1756. There was also a Joseph Cockrill,
age 25, who was 5 feet 4 inches tall, a planter from Westmorland County,
Virginia who enlisted September 1775. Anyone know who these Cockrells are?
There is also considerable info about the Presly Cockrell family on page 267
of Volume 9 of the Tyler Quarterly magazine. I will not take the space to
post all this data as it goes on for pages! I know some of you are descendant
of Presley Cockrell. Hope this gives you some new info.
Other interesting reading can be found in the Calendar of Virginia State
Papers. Volume 6, page 318 has a letter from Simon Cockerell to the Governor
about Indian problems. Page 329 has a letter from A. Lewis to the Governor
about Moses Cockrel and an Indian attack. This is a very interesting letter,
if you love history as I do. Apparently, Ensign Moses Cockrel was the only
survivor of an Indian attack.
I hope this will help some of you and you will give the rest of us the
complete story and how we all may fit into these families.

TBGreen3(a)aol.com
Hi Group,
As some of you know, I have been going through the Virginia periodical index,
which covers about 5 or 6 of the old historical and genealogical
"Quarterlies." This is a very slow process and I will probably never complete
the process since I am attempting to research several names as I go through
each volume.
The most interesting item I have locate in the last few days is contained in
Volume 25 (printed in 1917) of the William & Mary Quarfterly. Cockrell info is
listed on pages 42,46, 47, 98, 99, & 105. However you will need to read
several other pages to understand the importance of this info. The article is
basicly about the Downing family in the 1600's, and discusses the possibility
that John Dowling may have married Elizabeth, the widow of Andrew Cockrill.
Some of the info states that this John Dowling was appointed guardian of John
Cockrill, who was the son of Andrew Cockrell on October 19, 1681. The theory
is that Andrew Cockrill had died and his widow married John Downing, who was
appointed guardian of her children. The will of Mrs. Elizabeth Downing was
presented in court October 15, 1715. On page 46 there is a statement
indicating that Elizabeth Downing may have been a Saunders and later married
Charles Nelms on May 17, 1716. Anyone know the "rest of the story" on this
family?
On page 47 there is an indication that it was Samuel Downing who married
Elizabeth Saunders, the daughter of Ebenezer Saunders. Samuel Downing was the
son of John and Elizabeth Downing, mentioned above, so Samuel was the next
generation. To go on down, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Saunders Downing
was William Downing born about 1705, who married Sarah Cockrill, and died
about 1783. The will of Thomas Cockrill, dated January 9, 1768, named
daughter Sarah Downing. The will of Sarah Cockrill Downing, dated June 25,
1792, names daughter Elizabeth Downing born November 6, 1771, who married John
Cottrell.
On page 105 is info indicating that Edward Downing who was the son of Thomas
and Sarah Ann Rogers Downing, and grandson of Samuel Downing, and his wife
Hannah, made a deed for land to Presly Cockrell on December 13, 1802.
This is a very quick review of this info, and I hope one of you great
researchers will be able to give the rest of us the full story. How do our
Cockrells fit into this family?
