1. JOHN C.1 COCKRELL was born 1750, and died 1809 in Nash County, North
Carolina. He married NANCY ANNE WINSTEAD 1778.
>>
Hi Jim,
As I mentioned before, I have a few dates that you did not show on your
posting. These dates don't make much difference, but here they are:
I show John C. Cockrell was born about 1756 and died after March 20, 1809. He
married Nancy Anne Winstead, born about 1758 and died June 27, 1837 in
Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greene County, Alabama. She was the daughter of
Joseph and Susanna Winstead. Joseph was born about 1725 and died in January
1794 and his wife died some time later. Joseph was the son of Samuel Winstead
born October 25, 1701, died March 14, 1774.
I descend from Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell who married Selah Pridgen who had 2
sisters who married 2 brothers of Baldy. Let me know if I can provide an
additional data.

<< Having noted the attached message, I am curious to know whether the early
Cockrell family in Virginia might have included an Elizabeth Cockrell who
has been thought to have married Thomas Lyne of Lancaster County, VA in the
early 1700's. I know Thomas Lyne's wife was named Elizabeth. Some
authorities think she was Elizabeth Sanford, others Elizabeth Cockrell. Do
you have any information that would be relevant?

Hi Bill,
I have not seen any info on the Elizabeth Cockrells mentioned as possible
parents of my early Cockrell men. I have seen various mention of the
Elizabeth Cockrell in the early records, but do not know how she fits in.
There are a number of Cockrell researchers on this list that are far better
than I, and maybe one of them can help you.
Good luck,

Hi all,
This message reminds me I never received any replies to a puzzle I discovered a couple of months ago regarding Irvin Colson. The 1850 census lists Irvin and Nancy Colson and children. It also lists a Zilly Cockrell and son Bolivar J. According to Alabama marriage records an Irvin Colson married a Zilly Cockrell 10/31/1851. My records indicate Nancy died after 1850 so this marriage fits the dates. The only other reference I can find of Irvin was an Erwin Colson in the 1870 census. His wife is listed as Mary and the ages are not exactly right. Does anyone have any info on Irvin and Zilly Cockrell?
Thanks,
Larry Cockerell

Hi James,
I got your info and have just had a chance to review it. We basicly have the
same data for John down to your Robert Foster Colson, but I did not have his
children, so am thankful for that additional data. I do have a few dates that
you do not show and will send them to you when I get a chance.
About the only additional info I have that you do not show came from Tom
Cockerel who started this "list." From years of research, it is believed that
Thomas and Elizabeth Cockrell were the parents of our John C. Cockrell. It is
estimated that Thomas was born about 1720 in York County, Virginia. His
parents are believed to have been Samuel and Elizabeth Cockrell, with Samuel
having been born about 1671. Samuel's father is believed to have been Thomas
Cockrell born about 1624. Jack Olson and his brother have done a lot of
research on this line and they confirm the above information also. I have
attempted to locate any documentation to prove this info, but have been
unsuccessful to date.

<< What volume of the Virginia magazine did you find the article in? The
books are at my local library. I would like to get a copy. My step father is
related to Peter Presley. Peter's daughter married into his family. I am

look forward to hearing from you.
I sent what I had on Nancy Cockrell Colson to James Colson. I hope it
helps him. I sure was glad to get what I did when I started out.

Hi Joan,
Sorry I didn't note the volume of the William & Mary Quarterly where I found
the information, but there is an index of all of the Virginia quarterly
magazines and you can look up the few Cockrell entries in that index. There
was more information in an issue of the Virginia Historical Magazine on Peter
Presly and his family.
I also found a number of birth dates for our Cockrell ancestors in Volume 17,
page 240 of the William & Mary Quarterly magazines.
John Cockrell, son to John, was born November 22, 1669.
Eliza Cockrell, daughter to John, was born November 21, 1671.
Hannah Cockrell, daughter to John, was born February 20, 1680.
Edward Cockrell, son to John, was born December 29, 1674.
Richard Cockrell, son to John, was born December 3, 1683.
Wilaby Cockrell, son to Thomas, was baptized 1702.
Presley Cockerell, son to Thomas, was baptized December 19, 1704.
John Cockrell, son to Richard, was born September 23, 1715.
Samuel Cockrell, son to Timothy, was born May 19, 1747.
Presley Cockrell, son to Presley and Sarah, was born July 7, 1754.
I hope this helps someone.

Hi Group,
I was looking through the books on "Americans of Royal Descent" by Charles
Browning and noticed that a Judge Sterling R. Cockrill of Little Rock, who
married Mar Ashley Freeman in 1872 was related to King Edward 1 through his
wife. This pedigree starts on Page 266 if any of you are interested.

Steve,
I have been meaning to answer you post of 23 Feb for quite some time.
Unfortunately, for you, I got buried under a mountain of information on some
of my direct lines and I am just getting around to clearing up some of my
backlog.
I have your Edward Haynie mar. Amanda Cockrell in my data base. All the
information I have comes from The Cockrell Path Through Northumberland and
Lancaster Counties and Some of the Families that Path Touched, by Isabel
Gough, 1991.
They were mar. 24 Dec 1824 in Northumberland Co., VA. There were 5 children
listed. They are:
1. Narcissa
2. Sarah b. 25 Dec 1836 and mar. ___?___ Robinson
3. Tobias Riley b. 25 Dec 1836 and mar. Virginia Waite
4. Edward b. 1842 and mar. Lavina Hazzard (twin)
5. Amanda b. 1842 and m. George Timberlake 28 Dec 1865 in VA (twin)
I do not know if children # 2 & 3 were twins or if there was a transcription
error. They were not listed as twins. Also, I do not know if the family is
complete or not. Since Amanda and George were supposedly mar. in VA you might
check the 1850 census of Northumberland Co., Lancaster Co. and other nearby
counties.
Sorry I could not be of more help. I have not seen any posts to the list
about your question. I hope that some one else answered you and was more
help.
Earl
Some one inquired concerning the relationship of these women earlier this
week and I managed to lose the post and its copy so I am posting to list. I
will gladly supply details if recontact is made.
Karen Hoppack Smith (daughter of Matthew Smith) married Daniel Livingston.
Their daughter Karen Hoppack Livingston (b. 1812) married Luke Havird.
Their daughter, Karen Hoppock Havird (b. 1849) married John E. Cockrell.
Court records of Karen H. Cockrell always refer to her as K.H. Cockrell and
her mother's will refers to her as Shady Ann . Also there are instances
when rather than Karen the name is spelled Kareen in reference to these
woman.
