Hello,
I just thought that anyone who might connect to this line would be interested
in this cool tidbit. Thanks to Tom and Kay for bringing it up. My only
interest in the family history of this line has been to figure out what source
material was used to connect my Simon Cockrell to this John Cockrill.
Disproving something inaccurate is as important as proving what is accurate.

Autibiographical Sketch of John Cockrill -
The following is copied from John Cockrill's Bible, being in his own
handwriting. Sent by Mrs. Ewing, Nashville, Tenn. July 27, 1833.
"This is a sketch of part of my life from my 17th year, 1774, the day after a
tremendously big frost, about the 3rd or 4th of May. As my father and step-
father were both dead and left a very poor family, so of course there was
nothing left for me, so my mother bound me to a blacksmith ans I stayed with
him well on five years ans learned that trade, and also to make buns, but I
was drafted in the time, I believe twice. I went one time to Watauga as the
Indians had attacked their fort. I helped carry in one of the wounded on
Holsten as we went along on the way to Wautauga. Then I went on another trip.
I think they said we were to join Gen. McIntosh's Army against the Indians.
We traveled in snow knee deep and were out a good part of the winter and had
run out of provisions. There were six days I had not so much nourishment as
would make a good meal, and three days without one mouthful. The news came
from the General "Discharge the _____ and don't give them a mouthful to eat",
but the officers said "take as much flour as will do you". We did so, but the
weather was so bad we could not get along fast, but I got home ans served out
my time, and one other year, and got fixed, and in the fall of 1779, I came to
this country from Virginia, where I learned the trade. The first winter we
had peace, but at corn planting time the Indians began. They were bad, and
every two or three weeks they were doing some mischief, either killing or
wounding or stealing horses. Then in the spring of '81 there came 333 against
us. There were only 40 men in the fort at that time; 6 or 7 had gone to hunt
their town to get some horses, for they had got most of ours. These 40 were
all that lived on this side of the Cumberland. Of this 40, 20 of us went out
to meet them, not knowing their number. They were lying behind the bank of
the branch just from the stone bridge up to where it turns toward the tan-
yard, then in a circle so as to surround, and did come very near it. They
came in about three or four steps of me. I dodged to the river bank. Three
pursued me and I had gained two or three steps and turned around where there
was three in a row. I fired and killed the foremost one, if no more, and they
were shooting and knocking about among our men and killed six before they went
off. There was one of our men in their nation. He gave us the acaount. Then
there were some contrary folks who would not join to make corn, and we were in
a bad way, for we were out of bread again. At first it was nine or ten months
we had none, and in the fall of '81 was hard times, for the Indians were still
very bad and our bread ran out. There was for a time they were so bad we
could scarecly go out but they would shoot us. As it happened that I married
a woman in the year 1780, that we had three children. It had been about three
days that we had very little to eat. I had gathered up my tools and went in
from my shop, such as it was. The children were following their mother about
the cabin and saying, "Mammy, I'm hungry". I said, "I cant't stand that; I
must have meat or die", so I took my gun and started. My wife and several
others said, "you had better come back; you will never see the fort again." I
said, "the children are starving; I must go. I can see as good as the
Indians, and I will not follow any path, so they cannot waylay me." So I went
on and got something like three or four miles, shot one bear down, but it got
up and got away, so I could not find it. Then I was hunting along and came
across another and killed that and cut off his skin with most of the meat to
it; wrapped it up in the skin and took it on my back and carried it home and
cut it from the skin and weighed it. I had brought in one hundred pounds on
my back, and they came around us as my wife was helping to cut it. They said
'do give me a little." Some would say, "I have had nothing for three or four
days." Others would say, "My children are starving." My wife said, "What
shall we do?" I said 'Divide it out, only save us some for tomorrow." "I
think the Indians are gone, for I saw no sign of them and I will go again
tomorrow." So we went for a while and got provisions again. I have several
ups and sowns with the Indians. They shot at me five different times. One
time up the river on Goose creek there were seven of them and seven of us.
None got hurt, only I fell down and sprained my ankle chasing them. We killed
three of them and took twenty horses from them they had got from three
companies of our hunters that they had defeated. the night and morning that
we met them in the defeats they killed and wounded two or three of our men.
another time here at nashville, where I think there were forty or fifty guns
fored at me and never so much as touched my clothes, as I know of. another
time was here by the penitentiary they shot my mare through the neck. Then
another time I was out in the day on a scout and some of our men stopped out
to try to waylay the Indians as we had found signs of them, and they sent me
home to let the folks know that they were trying to waylay them . But the
Indians had got by the place and as I went home in the night four or five shot
at me not ten or twelve steps. Never struck me or my horse. another time two
men and I went to see if we could see any sign of them, as they had been very
much about for several weeks, and out by that lick where Charles Bosley lives,
about ten or twelve shot at me. As I was about seventy or eighty yards nearer
to them than the other men, they shot me through the arm and side, but touched
no bones; shot my mare through the brains as she was wheeling and threw her on
my leg and held me till they got in about six steps of me. I got loose and
rose up with my gun and killed the nearest one to me, and that surprised the
others so I got off and home, etc.
This manuscript is not signed, but is in John Cockrill's handwriting. On the
back of the paper is this; "Received nine dollars of Alex Bausley for a pided
cow, Oct. 4, 1833. John Cockrill"
John Cockrill evidently meant to add more to the above manuscript. The
sketch of John Cockrill's interesting life in the early days of Fort
Nashborough was copied and sent, with the explanatory note, to relatives in
Tennessee, by the owner of the manuscript, Mr. Mark Cockrill, of Great Falls,
Montana. This is an old much worn, leather-back Bible, about 10X10X3 inches.
The fly leaves are gone and there is nothing to show when it was printed.
There is a little slip pasted inside the cover which reads, "H. Elliot,
Bookbinder, Nashville, Tenn." so I supposed H. Elliot either rebound it or
sold it to John Cockrill. It contains no provision for recording births,
deaths and marriages. The following list is written on the back of a picture
or woodcut, of which it contains several.
The following information came from Mr. Mark Cockrill of Great Falls,
Montana, who owns the Cockrill Bible at the present time. (before 1968)

Hi Kay,
Glad that I could help you a little! I don't think I have ever been able to
help you since you are so much better at research than I. I am slowely
working my way through all the Virginia quarterly magazines (If I live long
enough!) and I will keep my eyes open for additional info.
I certainly want to revieve your news letter! How much money do we send?

Tom, For the rest of the story on John Cockrell of Nashville, TN, see Volume
2, Issue 1 of The Cockrell Connection. I am really glad to see the report
of his parentage as other information I had seen was quite confused about
who his father and mother were. F.G. Cockrell and F. N. Cockrell kept
insisting that he was the Rev. Simon Cockrell's half brother which I found
impossible to swallow.

Hi Group,
I found an article on the Presly family in the Virginia Historical Magazine.
I am sure some of you know that Elizabeth Presly, the daughter of Peter and
Elizabeth Thompson Presly, first married Ebenezer Saunders, and then John
Cockrell. The will of Elizabeth Presly Cockrell's is dated April 25, 1719 and
was proved May 20, 1719. Her will mentioned her son Presly Cockrell baptized
December 10, 1704, and daughter Hannah Cockrell. Other children mentioned in
her will are daughter Elizabeth Nelms, son Edward Saunders, son Willoughby
Cockrell baptized 1702 in St. Stephen's Parish, and son John. Son-in-law
Charles Nelms is named executor.
Another daughter, Jane Presly born June 29, 1664 married Richard Rogers who
died in 1697, and Jane then married Capt. Christo Neale.
I hope this helps some of you.

Hi Group,
I found some new info the other night in the William & Mary Quarterly
magazines. According to Granville Goodloe, Thebie Fox of Virginia whose
mother was an Alison, married John Cockerill (said to have been an English
Emigrant) and had one son John, born December 19, 1757. Thebie Fox Cockerill
next married David Collinsworth (also said to have been an English Emigrant),
and they had a son, Edmond Collinsworth. Thebie Fox Cockerill Collinsworth
again married a Mr. Kells but they did not have any issue.
Thebie Fox Cockerill's son John Cockerill, Jr. served in the Virginia Militia
in the relief of Ft. Watanga in 1776, and next year under Mackintosh. In
1779-80 he went with James Robertson's colony to the Cumberland River, and
married Robertson's sister, Mrs. Ann Johnson, and died in Nashville, Tenn.
April11, 1837.
I am on the road and have not had a chance to review my data base to attempt
to identify this family. I assume this is the Cockrell who lived in the
Nashville, Tenn. area and Cockrell Neck was names for. Who can give us the
rest of the story on this John Cockerill?

My grandmother (Mahala WALDROP) had a sister knicknamed "LULA" who married
a COCKRELL around Hamilton Texas in the 1890's or early 1900's.
I have been unable to determine which sister (Harriet Emma, Maria, Mary,
Joanna and Sarah are the possibilities) and have been unable to find any
further information re this COCKRELL connection.
Does anyone have a connection?

Looking for Mary Cockrell b.abt 1821, lived her life in Carroll
County, Ohio. She was married to Jared(Jarrett) Davis by 1837 and shows
as divorced on the 1880 census. Could have been sooner as she is alone,
with her children or with her mother Elizabeth for 2 previous census.
Her children are Levi, Mahala, Louisa. Also on the census are listed
Robert and Stephen but their birthdates are in the 1860's so they may in
fact be grandsons. Sorry for the limited information. Hope something
clicks. Thanks

Hello,
lane, that information is in the F. N. Cockrell document "Cockrell Family" of
1915. The source information is listed and from experience it can all be
verified. The Jeremiah Cockrell with children that you list is in there with
source information. I do hope you make some contacts on this line. If you do
then I feel certain you will be able to obtain that document from them.
Glad to hear from you.

Hello,
Thank you Kay for bringing up this controversy. This is a well thought out
piece of information. The question of Celia and her origins has been around
since the 1960's.
First of all the professional genealogists often discuss obituaries in
articles that I read. It is not so uncommon to find them filled with little
errors. They are a nice place to start and often tell of visiting relatives
from other states and suggest ties we had not seen before.
In this obituary we can understand how family tradition can become public
information and still be in error. Just as F. N. Cockrell of 1915 did many of
the Cockrell surname a great favor by leaving his research notes for us to
follow still the problem of inaccurate connections has many of us digging
deeper for more facts.
Senator Francis Marion Cockrell was a public figure for many years. He
resided most in Washington D.C. however he did go "home" for census. He owned
a home in Warrensburg, Missouri that no longer stands but once was open to the
public for tours. The property now belongs to SPRINT and a very large and
modern building stands where it once stood.
Joseph Cockrell died intestate.
Adm. James Carmichael and Robert M. White appt. 28 DEC 1837.
Sec. James Sterling and Harvey Dyer and William T. Conway.
heirs: widow, Nancy Cockrell
children, Nancy Cockrell late Nancy Logan; Polly Cockrell; Mary Ann
Cockrell; Louisa Cockrell; Sarah Cockrell; Jeremiah Vardeman Cockrell; FRANCIS
MARION COCKRELL, all residing in Johnson Co., Mo.
Taken from page 2 of the Johnson County Probate records book.
The estate of Joseph Cockrell was very large. The Real Estate covered two
counties. Those counties are Johnson and Jackson. A map of the property in
Johnson County was included in the book EARLY COCKRELLS IN MISSOURI by Monroe
Fulkerson Cockrell of Illinois in 1966. The courts of each county have
probate records showing what portion each of the above named heirs inherited.
Some say that his property was so vast it took two days to sell it all. They
are inaccurate to a degree. Very little of the property was actually sold.
Just enough to pay the debts of the estate. When the two days is mentioned
above, it refers to the day in court for Johnson County and the day in court
for Jackson County. This is a simple example of how the facts can easily
become misstated.
Some of the heirs of Joseph Cockrell were minors at the time of his death.
Francis Marion was but 8 years old and his brother Jeremiah Vardeman was age
10 years. Each minor heir was appointed a guardian of their estate until
reaching age 14.
Collecting the records from this estate meant picking up records in both
Johnson and Jackson Counties. I paid a modest fee for copies once they were
found in the books. I believe I have sent out copies of these records in my
exchange packages.
They prove the connections of some of the children of Joseph Cockrell.
Further this information is being used to create a map showing the position of
each property in Jackson County by Bill Ballew. When he has completed it I
hope to trade with him for a copy.
Joseph Cockrell himself was the first sheriff of Johnson County, Missouri. He
was noted publicly as a good and honest man. Perhaps this inspired some of
his sons to study to practice law.
The sons of Francis Marion Cockrell who wrote books are Francis Marion
Cockrell II and Ewing Cockrell. Francis Marion Cockrell II wrote and
published THE SENATOR FROM MISSOURI The Life And Times of Francis Marion
Cockrell. The copyright date in 1962. Ewing Cockrell wrote the book "History
of Johnson County". Each also wrote many letters to other Cockrells in the
country comparing information and concluding in some way family relationships
that have at times proven to be in error. We thank them for their hard work.
Because the family of Joseph Cockrell and the family of Morgan Cockrell
resided in the same county it has been no trouble to collect the source
materials on each of the families of these brothers. James Cockrell was
another brother residing in Missouri and his residence was nearer Lafayette
County, Missouri.
Of the sons of Joseph Cockrell three were in the Civil War and all fought for
the Confederacy. Simon N. Cockrell being the eldest was a scout. He
recruited among the residents of Missouri. Jeremiah Vardeman Cockrell was
part of the party who destroyed the Newspaper office at Parkville Missouri for
printing anti-slavery matter. Brig. Gen. Francis Marion Cockrell led many
battles in Jackson and Cass County Missouri. He is the only one of the three
brothers who obtained a pardon for his participation in the Confederate side
of the Civil War. He is also noted as having been the only Confederate
Officer to be recognized with praise by the Union Veterans and the reason was
later found to be that he had been assisting the union soldiers in filling out
their pension papers free of charge.
Of interest to some is the fact that no battles were fought in Warrensburg,
Missouri, the home of these Cockrells. Lone Jack, Missouri, the scene of a
terrible battle is far down the road and in Jackson County. In Warrensburg
were two regiments one Union and one Confederate. They would each drill on
seperate ends of town.
"Poppy" West had little use for Francis Marion Cockrell. Family stories of
how he felt about this man kept me from gathering anything about him for a
very long time. Poppy or James Samuel West was the son of Nancy Cockrell and
Barksdale West all of Johnson County, Missouri. Nancy Cockrell being the
daughter of Morgan Cockrell and Hannah Andrews. The politics were different
and so were the religious beliefs of these two related families. This is
possibly why some stated that the two families of Cockrells living in the same
County were not believed to be related. Still we see that in fact Joseph and
Morgan Cockrell were indeed brothers.
State of Missouri

This affiant, William Cockrell makes oath and states that to the best of his
knowledge and belief the names and places of residence of the heirs of Simon

Joseph Cockrells heirs; Nancy and Polly, Maryann and Sally, Jeremiah Vardiman
and Francis Marion of Johnson County, Missouri.
Betsy Sergeant of Illinois.
James Cockrill of Johnson County, Missouri.
William Cockrell of Jackson County, Missouri.
And this affiant further States that said deceased died without a Will and

Signed, William Cockrell
Sworn and subscribed to before one James C. Jackson Clerk of the County Court
of the County aforesaid this 28th day of September A. D. 1843.
Signed James C. Jackson, Clerk
Filed Sept. 29th 1843. James; Clerk.
Of the family I have interviewed, none are faintly aware of a Celia Cockrell.
Of the things written that I have collected none mention a Celia Cockrell.
With the simple exception of the F. N. Cockrell document of 1915. There it
lists a Celia Cockrell who married a William Callahan and believed to be a
daughter of Simon. The above list of heirs of Rev. Simon Cockrell found at
Cass County Archives in Harrisonville, Missouri makes no mention of Celia
Callahan or her heirs. Perhaps she died without heirs prior to the date of the
document. Further in the vast lists of names of Cockrells collected for this
family there exists no tradition of naming any daughters Celia.
I therefore conclude that some Newspaper reporter or Funeral Home took it upon
themselves to create this connection to further their publicity as was common
for the times. I have searched for the name hoping to make a connection but
one never turns up so far. I feel this has been a case of a mistake having a
snowball effect and this problem has vexed family historians on both the
Cockrell side and the Hainline side for far too long. A deeper search for the
actual papers of Celia Cockrell would be in order.
An application to the DAR by a descendant of Maryann Cockrell and her first
husband Samuel Hays notes that Maryann married 2nd to Moses Tapscott. Census
records report her places of residence and the members of the household. She
did own property in both Johnson and Jackson Counties as is found in the
probate records of Joseph Cockrell, deceased. Following up on her property
records and locating her probate records would remove all doubt as to her
descendants. This we did with Nancy Cockrell-West and her will leaves no
doubt as to her descendants.
I hope that anyone wishing to trade information on this line of Joseph
Cockrell will contact me. It would be my pleasure to swap copies of my source
materials for copies of your source materials.
Hope to hear from you soon.

During this past week, I got into the Cockrell List archives and discovered
even more controversy. Mary Cockrell Shipe in Roseville, CA had submitted
an obituary for Celia Cockrell Hainline on 9 Sep 1997. I have a copy of
this in my documents somewhere which kept telling me something was wrong
without surfacing far enough for me to access it.
In Mrs. Celia Hainline's obituary it states that she d. in Blandinsville Twp
on 7 Feb 1885 at age 91 yrs. I'm going to abstract the necessary
information. She was b. Celia Cockrell in 1794 in East Tennessee. At age 5
she moved w/parents to Fayette Co, KY; had 7 or 8 sisters and one brother,
who moved to MO and was the father of Gen. Cockerel, now representing MO in
US Senate (Francis Marion). Celia m. Joseph Hainline & they moved to
Montgomery Co where they lived until 1838 & where her children were born.
In 1838 they moved with a brother of her husband George Hainline and his
wife, who was the sister of the deceased (this would be Flora) & their grown
children from KY to McDonough Co ....
On Oct 31, 1997, "kytrace" posted a message on Mary Cockrell & Moses
Tapscott which said that Mary was the daughter of Joseph Cockrell and Nancy
Ellis and the sister of Francis Marion Cockrell. This information agrees
with that written by F. N. Cockrell, Jr. in 1915 regarding the parentage of
Francis Marion. I think that Bella Hughes has proven that Joseph and Nancy
are in fact the parents of Francis Marion.
Both of these cannot be right. I doubt sincerely that Celia was the aunt of
Francis Marion; however, it is likely that she had only one brother if any
at all. If her obit is to be believed at all she could not be the sister of
Janet Cockrell who m. John Rice because they married in VA and according to
her obit the family was already in east TN or possibly KY by the time they
married. Furthermore, she is probably of the wrong generation to be
Janet's sister unless Janet was the oldest and she the youngest of the 11
children.
While I do not always agree with F.N. Cockrell, Jr. I do think he provides
us with places to look. He lists John Cockrell, s-i-l of John Longworthy,
Westmoreland Co, VA. Father of Elias and Joseph. Elias d. 1812, intestate,
Loudon Co, VA.
Joseph Cockerill prob. m. Jane Colvill from a deed dated 16 Sep 1746,
recorded Fairfax Co, VA. His will dated 16 Jan 1793, proved 21 Apr 1795,
Fairfax Co, VA names children Ann DORISS (dec'd); Sampson, dec'd; Jemimah
LAY, Christopher, John prob. m. Ann CHILTON, Joseph Marmaduke and Jane
Bethetholim.
F. N. does relate the two families. He has the first John above as the son
of John and Simon as the grandson of Thomas, who was supposedly son of the
same John, making the 1st John above and Thomas brothers; but this would be
a very distant relationship for Francis Marion and Celia Hainline.
I thought I would throw some grease on the fire to see if we couldn't get
some dialogue going. We've had very little posting to the Cockrell list
since I subscribed. I realize that I haven't posted a lot to the list yet.
Why don't we each try to post something at least once a week to keep all our
members interested and to help us gain new members. Anyway, I hope this
gives you all something to think about. Let me hear arguments for and
against what I just said.

Hello Fellow Researchers,
Finding more information all of the time through the library and enjoying
collecting it.
Since I made copies of each of the Deeds in Russell County for Simon Cockrell
and since each is signed also by his wife Magdaline/Magdalena as relinquishing
her dower it is safe to state that this is indeed my ancestor. The latest and
best is a copy of the Survey of Washington County, Virginia stating not only
the boundaries of the property but the drawing of the outline as well. It
covers the dates of survey and the difference of the 100 acres we all were
wondering about. In 1781 the survey covered 300 acres for which Simon
Cockrell qualified in 1775 and later he increased entitlement by an additional
100 acres recorded as surveyed in 1783.
Of interest in this document is the statement that Washington and Montgomery
Counties are included in this record.
It therefore suggest that the Simeon Cockral listed as taking the oath in
Montgomery County, Virginia should prove to be the same Simon Cockrell who is
the Baptist Minister and Represents Russell County in the Virginia Assembly.
This is the next clue in the discovery of primary source documents for Simon
Cockrell. See VIRGINIA MILITARY RECORDS From the Virginia Magazine of History
and Biography, the William and Mary College Quarterly, and Tyler's Quarterly.
With an Index by Elizabeth Petty Bently. Baltimore, GENEALOGICAL PUBLISHING
CO., INC. 1983. Pages 209, 210, & 211.
Search Montgomery County, Virginia history records and make note of all
Cockrell/Cottrell/Cockrill or any other spelling with every given name in the
county. This should appear around the times of 1775 to 1777 give or take a
few years.
The records for Moses Cockrell are located in Lee County, Virginia records.
His deeds and estate settlement will be there according to a new contact who
has actually visited Powell's Valley in Virginia in her search for ancestors.
She is not on the list and does not use computer but did write me from an
address sent to her by a list subscriber. Also I have information on the same
line from another source giving dates and places and a family group sheet on
the wife of Moses Cockrell.
This combined with the other records I already had continue to build a clearer
picture of our Moses Cockrell and his life. It would be a pleasure to
exchange information with anyone of these lines. I am expecting some records
on Simon, Moses and John Cockrell of Russell County, Virginia any day now and
can give an up date.
I would like to add that our search for the grave of Simon Cockrell took us to
three cemetaries in Cass County, Missouri this week. I noted a few names in
each and plan to contact the library for any listings of who might be buried
in them without headstones. The Cleveland Cemetary looked old enough to have
been in existence at the time of the death of Simon and Mary Magdaline
Cockrell. They are buried in the same grave but Francis Marion Cockrell II
did not tell us what cemetary they are buried in.
Cousin Bill Ballew contacted the Secretary of State for Missouri and was given
a notarized statement that Simon Cockrell was the first representative from
Clay County, Missouri 1822 - 1824. It is a lovely document and helps honor
our ancestor by crediting him when all records were destroyed. Bill had
dinner with the lady in a meeting with others of the party and states that she
is a pleasent and attractive person. We are all grateful for her time and
kindness in this matter.
Ida Eckersley, my aunt, is taking the document to the media and to the
archives for recognition and preservation of the document. Together these
family members have gone a long way toward honoring our gggg grandfather. Or
their ggg grandfather.
I would still like to know more about Alexander Cockrell and his sister Sarah
Cockrell who married Presley Davis and the 8 children listed in the Kentucky
1810 Census in their household. They all moved on to Indiana and Illinois and
that is about the limit of the information Ihave on her. I have her marriage
record, the Census record and her being named in the list of heirs of Simon
Cockrell Sr. Please help me find the names of the Davis grandchildren of
Simon Cockrell.
Hope to hear form you all soon.
Bella Hughes
Whilst not of the same family line, I am very interested in contacting
any of the family who would be interested in exchanging information.
My earliest COCKERILL's are 1665, London, UK, through another 4
generations in London, then 1824 to Tasmania (Henry Mylam COCKERILL),
then to New Zealand in 1867 (Denis Jones COCKERILL), and I am 3rd
generation on from there.
We have good records of Tasmania, and New Zealand, but large gaps in the
UK history.
I tried to e-mail <clair(a)ihug.co.nz> but my mail was returned.
Any contact would be valued.
