I am taking the liberty of posting your message on the Cockrell List, in hopes
that someone can help you more that I am able to provide. This is not my

Hi Glen,
I did not realize we were talking about the Cockrell family. THe only name
that is familiar is the Bryant name. I believe some of my Arch Cockerell
daughters married a Bryant, but will have to wait until I get home to look up
what I have. I work on the road and can't take my files on the road with me.
I recall my mother had an Uncle George Cockerell who would have been a son of
Arch and Van Burena Rush. I will let you know what I have.

Patti, Cockrell-l, Tom Green,
I have visited the cementery in Mt. Sterling and have pictures of the
graves of Benjamin Franklin Cockrell and several of the family members. On
both visits I was unable to get to the library or the courthouse therefore
I do not have much evidence. If you would like me to send the pictures to
you please respond to me privately.
Last year I posted a bio of Benjamin Frankin Cockrell to the list. If
someone has a copy please send to Patti. My copy was lost during a
computer crash.

Hi Garrett,
Well, I finally got home for one day, so here is what I have in my computer on
Elisha Cockrell. I show he was born April 6, 1811 in Nash County, North
Carolina as the son of Joseph Jacob Cockrell and Piety Pridgen. Joseph Jacob
Cockrell, born about 1780 in Nash Co. NC. was the son of John C. Cockrell born
about 1756 probably in Virginia, and his wife Nancy Anne Winstead, the
daughter of Joseph and Suzanna Winstead. Joseph Jacob Cockrell was the brother
of Archibald Cockrell, called "Baldy" who married Selah Pridgen on March 15,
1815. Piety Pridgen and Selah Pridgen were sisters and daughters of Drewery
and Selah Creekmore Pridgen. Drewery fought in the American Revolution and
there is a Pridgen "list" on the internet where you can get a copy of his will
and other details of this family. There was a 3rd Pridgen sister that married
another Cockrell brother. Elizabeth Pridgen married Vincent Cockrell a
brother of Joseph Jacob Cockrell and Baldy Cockrell.
Now, it is believed that John C. Cockrell was the brother of Jacob Cockrell
who married the widow Penelope Williams, and these are the ancestors of Kay
Cockrell who knows much more about them than I.
It is also believed that these two brothers had a 3rd brother, Thomas Cockrell
who married Tabitha Hatcher. Thomas died in Johnson County, North Carolina in
1799 and his estate documents are located in the micro-film in the Clayton
Library in Houston, Texas which show a ton of detail about his family. Tom
Cockerel and Jack Olson, and his brother, have done a great deal of research
on these families and they believe that the parents of these 3 brother were
Thomas and Elizabeth Cockrell, and the parents of Thomas were Samuel and
Elizabeth Cockerill, and the father of Samuel was Thomas Ciockerill born about
1624.
I hope this gives you a sumary of what I have gathered on our ancestors, and
will be of some help to you. Please remember that most of the actual research
was done by Kay Cockrell, and I only have documents on my line from John C.
Cockrell down.

Hello,
I hope that we are all clear on which Simon Cockrell was the Baptist
minister.
He was licensed to perform the marriage ceremony by the courts in Washington
County, Virginia.
Simon Cockrell was also a Legislator in Virginia representing Russell County.
His land surveys in Washington County total 700 acres.
Deeds in Russell County include one sold to Simon Cockrell Jr. and state that
Simon Cockrell was a resident of Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1805.
The 1810 Kentucky Census for Montgomery County shows him there and that three
sons are residing with him and Mary Magdalena Vardeman Cockrell.
1822 Simon Cockrell the Reverend, former Legislator from Russell County,
Virginia was a member of the Missouri State Legislature representing Clay
County, Missouri and the 1830 Census of Missouri shows him to be a resident
there. That census was taken by Marshall Coleman Younger.
Simon Cockrell Sr. died in Missouri and in the Cass County, Missouri archives
is a copy of his list of heirs. It was written and submitted by his son
William Cockrell who was also a Baptist minister. After the death of Simon
and Mary Magdalena Cockrell who according to family tradition died within 36
hoiurs of each other and are buried in the same grave; William left Missouri
following the death of his wife Nancy Wright Cockrell and remarried in
Kentucky.
Other sons who resided in Missouri were James Cockrell and Miss Turner who
had
2 daughters before she died and He then married a widow Nancy Stoveall Doakes
who had sons by her late husband. Together they had four children.
Morgan Cockrell and Hannah Andrews lived in Missouri also and had six
children. Joseph Cockrell and his third wife came to Missouri from Kentucky.
Joseph had children by his first two wives and Nancy Ellis had 8 children by
Joseph. That would be the famous Francis Marion line. Also the famous
Jeremiah V. Cockrell of Texas line and the famous Alexander Cockrell of
Dallas
Texas line.
The Kentucky sons were Simon Cockrell Jr. who married twice and his second
wife was Mary Smith. Jeremiah Cockrell who owned many slaves and lived alone
with them for at least 20 years. John Cockrell who married Amelia Alley was
also a son of Simon Cockrell Sr, the Reverend and Legislator of Virginia and
Missouri.
Given Simon Cockrell's history of involvement in state politics I believe he
must have done something in Montgomery County, Kentucky while all of his sons
were making lives for themselves and his daughters were making families.
Sally Cockrell married Presley Davis and they resided in Estill County,
Kentucky. On the census the 8 children have me interested. I wish to find
names for these grandchildren of Simon Cockrell and first cousins to my Nancy
Cockrell West. So back to the census and county histories I go.
Has anyone done any research on this group? I sure would like some input. I
get close and find something and then I track that something to it's source.
Reading old caligraphy is becoming easier with time. Uncle Max promised me
that if I learned to write it I would then be able to read it. He is a wise
old man of the sea. He was right and I should tell him that.
Must sign off now he is not on computer.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Garrett and Tom,
Garrett, you are probably talking about Elisha Henry Cockrell of Nash Co., NC. He was the son of Joseph Jacob Cockrell, a brother to John C. Cockrell who Tom and I descended from. One of his sons I have as Josiah Jacob and you say is Josiah Joseph. I have obtained a bit of data on this line. In fact I have been researching Elisha's Henry's sons that were in the civil war, Josiah, Jonathan (next child born after Josiah), Isaac. I have found the units they served in and as you probably know Jonathan was wounded, captured and died at Gettysburg. I would be interested in any info you might have on this line.
The Elisha that Tom is talking about is Edward Elisha Cockerell born 1875. His father was Archibald C. Cockerell.
Regards,
Larry Cockerell

Hello Fellow Researchers,
William Cockrell the subject of this posting was the son of Simon Cockrell and
Mary Magdaline Vardeman Cockrell. Simon Cockrell was a Regular Baptist
minister and a member of the Virginia State Legislature. Later he resided
briefly in Kentucky and moved on to Missouri where he was a member of the
Missouri State Legislature and the first representative from Clay County,
Missouri in 1822 till 1824.
It would be 23+ pages to tell you what I have collected on his life. One day
I hope to locate his father.
William Cockrell was born about 1785 in Virginia. He married Nancy Wright in
1812 near Boone's Station, Kentucky. Nancy Cockrell died in Missouri and
William later married Rhody or Rhoda McQuinn.
In the 1820 census for Estill County, Kentucky there were 4 sons and 1
daughter in his household.
F. G. Cockrell Jr. wrote a letter September 29, 1890 about his family history.
F. N. Cockrell of 1915 copied some of that.
Cockrell and Allied Families published 1950 copied from the 1915 document.
William Cockrell had a morgage for $27.83 against the crops and a Red cow and
calf of Edmond Bean, on May 22, 1841 at Vanburen County, Missouri.
William also wrote the court the list of heirs of Simon Cockrell his father
September 28, 1843 at Vanburen County, Missouri in which he states that he is
a resident of Jackson County.
In 1850 the census of Breathitt County lists William Cockrell with only Rhody
in his household. He is a Farmer and Clergy.
A nice biography of William Cockrell was done by J. Green Trimble in 1908. I
found a copy of it in the Cockrell Connection Vol. 2 Issue 3 page 26. by Kay
Kazmir.
Thanks Kay!!
The children of William Cockrell and Nancy Wright are:
1. Felix Grundy Cockrell b. Jan. 1, 1813 Kentucky.
2. Martin Cockrell b. Sep. 14, 1814 Kentucky d. August 1835 near St. Charles,

Westley Cockrell sold his property (40 acres) to Morgan Cockrell on March 18,
1837 in Vanburen County, MO for the sum of $50.00.
Morgan Cockrell was the uncle of Westley Cockrell and a brother of William
Cockrell.

Hi Garrett,
You lost me with Elisha?? I descend from Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell, the son
of John and Nancy Anne Winstead Cockrell. Baldy married Selah Pridgen and
their son, Archibald "Arch" Cockerell married Mary Minerva Hittson in
Mississippi and they came to Texas about 1850 and lived on some land in Rusk
County, Texas where her father Alexander Hittson had obtained. Mary Minerva
had 13 children and died, and Arch Cockerell then married Van Burena Rush in
Tyler, Texas in 1879. Their son, Dr. Lonnie Lee Cockerell was my mother's
father.
I am on the road and don't have my records with me, but the only Elisha
Cockerell I recall was a 1/2 brother of my grandfather, who was also a doctor.
Please tell me more about your connection to the family.

Big Hello,
I have some things on your Westly Cockrell!!!
My Morgan Cockrell was his uncle and they had a property transaction that I
can send you copies of from the original Court records books.
Westley Cockrell was the son of William Cockrell and Nancy Wright.
Wiliam Cockrell is the author of the list of heirs for his father Simon
Cockrell the Baptist Minister. I have a copy of that in the original from the
Court records files. Simon Cockrell was married to Mary Magdaline Vardeman
and together they had twelve children. It can be complicated but I am
building a report on all of the descendants of Simon Cockrell the Reverend.
The Texas Cockrells of Dallas were first cousins of your Westley Cockrell or
John Westly Cockrell as he was listed in the family Bible. I also have a copy
of their marriage record from the County court records. It is listed in a
book too but I like the old hand written stuff best.
By the way did you know that he lived in Missouri before moving to Texas??
Lord do you have any more detail on his descendants??
I would consider it a great trade if you had.

Bella,
I looked for that Peter Cottrell in my db (since I have no Reubens) but could
only find two who might be a match. Not surprising since my db is nowwhere
need complete. My possible matches were Peter, son of William and Mary
Cockrell and Peter, son of Presley and Sarah Ball (though I have him married
to a Sarah Smithers).
I probably do not have him but figure that with a Cottrell spelling he was
probably a descendent of Andrew and not John (children of John the Coachman).
Could you give me a hint as to who Peter Cottrell's parents were? I would
appreciate it.
Earl
