subject" on my computer, it disappeared. Would it possible to see it please?
Thanks very much.

Good Day,
Good Day,
Some of you can trace your family back to Lucretia Neal and John John
Cockerell. Some time ago I got a document from 'Colonial Familites Of
The United States'. This document provides the linage of the Neal
family. I thought I could put it up for your enjoyment.
Thr first mention of the Neal family in Virginia is in 1630, when John
Neale "Gent" was granted fifty acres in Accomac County. Nine years
later he was Member of the House of Burgess. His wife was Elizabeth
Southey. Other members of the House of Burgess were Capt. Richard and
Christopher Neale. The latter was Justice of Northumberland County,
from 1685 to 1719. Representavies of the family were living in King
William, Fauquier anmd Mason Counties.
This branch of the Virginia is decended from Lt. Daniel Neale, b. 1620;
d 1671; one of the two "forfieting" propietors of Ireland who settled in
Northumberland County, Virginia and was appointed in 1659 Constable;
from the county records we learn that his wife's name was Eleanor _____.
Issue:
1. Daniel b. 1642; m. Elizabeth Holland, dau of Daniel and Joyce
Holland; she m. 2nd Phillip Shapleigh.
Issue:
Daniel
Edward
William
Ebenezer
Lucretia m. John Cockerill
Hannah m. Capt. John Haynie
2. Christopher b. 1644
3. Robert
4. Charles
Christopher Neal of Northumberland, Virginia b. 1664; d 1696, was a
Burgess of the Virginia Assembly and a Civil Offider of the County for
1680 to 1685; m. Hannah Rodham, dau of Matthew and Elizabeth Rodham.
Issue:
Major Richard of the Militia and Member of the House of Burgess.
Capt Christopher of the Militia and Member of the House of Burgess
Daniel III
Matthew
Rodham
John
Daniel Neale III, of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Va, b. in
Northumberland County, 26th July, 1673; died Dec. 1713. His will dated
19 Dec 1713 and probated the same year; was member of House of Burgess;
removed to Westmoreland County; m Ursula PResley, dau of Col. William
Presley and sister of Capt. Peter Presley.

Good Day,
I am not aware of any organized boycott of the list. You are correct
that some feelings were hurt but I am under the impression that it was
diffused. It is quite normal for disruptions in postings. Sometimes
they can be explained due to holidays, vacations or other interests. It
is my hope that we can hear from more often from our more than 100 list
members. We are continuing to get more members and average three new
members a week. We ususally lose one member during the same period for
a net gain of two members. The list is only as active as the number of
people that posts.
This email was written as a response to several queries as to the
present inactivity on the list. Please post often.

<< 11-11-98 (Just remembered, this is Veteran's Day!) >>
Thanks Ron,
I want to take this occasion to say a few words to the Lists about today, and
what It means to me. Like most of you genealogist, I had an ancestor that
fought in almost every war that American have been involved in, but the
celebration of Veteran's Day is one of the most important days in the lives of
everyone living today. As you know today was the day of the surrender of
Germany after WWI, but has been changed to include a celebration for all
veterans in all wars. My father was a POW in WWII, so Veteran's Day has
always had a special meaning, but today is even more special for me. This
morning, over 80 color guards will be gathering at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas,
Texas for a Massing of the Colors. I am priviliged to be a member of our Sons
of the American Revolution (SAR) local chapter's Color Guard, and will be
proudly carry the Flag of our nation today for this celebration. I encourage
each of you to participate in the celebrations being conducted in your
community today, and express your thanks for what our fathers, mothers, sons,
brothers, daughters and grandparents have done so that we can enjoy the the
most wonderful country on earth! A very famous man from England once said
that those who don't study history are doomed to commit the errors of the
past. Lets always remember what our ancestors did for us.
God Bless America!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I thank you for your support.
1. I would reather see the free transfer of information between
individuals on the listserver.
Between individuals they may wish to share. " I'll give you what I have
but can I see what you have". If you pass information to individuals
via the regular mail service you should be expected to be reimbursed for
copying and postage.
I cannot define every situtation but be aware that at some point you may
have more than the other person you are sharing with. Also remember
that the information you may receive should only be used as a reference
until it can be verified.
I am not trying to set any rules but this can be used as a quide for
dealing with others. I am here to help settle disputes and am happy to
assist upon request.
2. Have fun
Tom

Tom,
I appreciate your efforts to keep the list civil. I also am wondering if you
have a new URL for your homepage on the Kentucky Cockrells? The link from
Jim's Cockrell Collections doesn't work. I post the above only to let
everyone know that whatever information I have on ANY Cockrell, I will gladly
share without any expectation of something in return. The whole "I'll only
give something only if you give something" is foreign to me. Since I am new
to genealogy (less than two years, only one year seriously) I don't know all
the etiquette. If free exchange of information is not the norm, please let me
know. If I must ante up something each time, then it's nice to know so I play
by the rules.

Cockrell list members,
I apologize if my post caused ill feelings. I was not using "intimidation"
practice or any other type of action to get "slave" info from anyone. While
I realize some people may not have taken the name of an owner, more times
than not, they did, if it was someone they deemed a good one. There were
times when some took the name of a favored owner even if they had been sold
elsewhere prior to emancipation.
Again, I apologize for offending. I simply believed that these various
genealogy lists were here so that people could share and help one another.
No one expects someone else to do their research, but in some instances, a
few heads are better than one.
For some of us, we need assistance more than others. There is no demand,
just a genuine request for assistance if you have it available to give.
I've received good suggestions and assistance from people from across many
lists. I've had good suggestions here that were tapered with additional
phrases that weren't so nice, but I never posted them to the list because I
didn't want to cause someone else a problem.
Tom I want to specifically thank you. Because of our phone conversation a
couple of months ago, you led me off in the direction that helped locate my
Cockell/Cochran group.
Peace,
Chandra
Ladies and Gentlemen,
STOP!!!!!!!!!!! and let's act like ladies and gentlemen. Mud Slinging
and "name calling" is not going to get us anywhere.
If someone feels wronged then contact that person individually. I will
not lose members over the actions of a few. Enough said about this
subject. I rarely get this angry but I have actions that can be taken
as the listowner.
Let's get back to our research.

I agree with Kay on this matter. All of us have been carefully encouraging
each other to include dates and places in each and any query. The Cockrells
did choose to name repeatedly the same set of names to carry on the family
traditions.
As for slave matters; it has come to my attention that upon emancipation
slaves took whatever slave name struck their fancy with no regard for
biological connection. An earlier message mentioned the Thomas Jefferson
Family Story. In this we saw some brothers receive their papers and they
chose the name of Davis. The surname had nothing to do with the parents of
these brothers and their descendants are not yelling at the Davis family list
to up with informaiton on any Davis family in the United States for family
slave information and expecting people to give it gratis out of fear that the
demands will not cease.
Intimidation tactics to gather information are childish and rude. Response is
low and inaffective.

I have dates on these marriages.
Just to let you know that my research has taken me to Alexander Cockrell.
Yes, there was an Alexander Cockrell, who was my gg-grandfather. He had a
rather large family of children. One of his sons was named Alexander (b.
1863). He was from Alabama, born abt 1837. In the 1870 census records for
Madison County MS, he was listed as Cockrell. In the 1880 Madison County
records, he was listed as Cochran. All of my g-grandmother's information
(death certificate, one child's birth certificate) lists her as a Cockrell.
My information is as follows:
COCKRELL, Alexander, b. 1837 AL (parents from AL)
m. Harriette Unk, b. 1837 AL (parents from SC)
Children:
Eliza, b. 1854 AL
Perry, b. 1857 MS
Leon, b. 1858 MS
Alexander, b. 1863 MS
Emma, b. 1866
George, b.1867
Frederick, b. 1869
James, b. February 1870
Robert, b. 1873
Annie, b. 1875
Mary, b. 1876
Robert, b. 1878
Kattie, b. January 1882
I don't know that I will find any collaboration on my COCKRELL line (I
haven't to date). Most of you know that I am African American, but just for
the record, 6 of these children were listed as Mulatto in the 1870 census
records.
I hope that, now, someone will assist me in looking through wills, slave
lists you may have available, etc. I would appreciate any assistance that
anyone out there would be "willing" to give or provide. I can't apologize
for being a Cockrell descendent (which I feel compelled to do) and while I
may not be in your line, I and all of my family are descended therein.
I also have an index of marriages with Cockrells on it that show where on
the Family Finder CDs a marriage record could be located (I don't have the
marriage dates, just the INDEX).
Thanks and have a very nice day to all of you (even those who said I
couldn't be a Cockrell or my people couldn't be).
And for the individual who said that N.L. Coksell (Cockrell) who married
Temperance didn't have an Allonzo listed as a child, perhaps you should
check the 1860 Lowndes County MS census records.

Chandra,
After the news this weekend that Thomas Jefferson fathered a child with his
slave (pretty much proved with DNA), maybe some nonbelievers will come around.
DNA and biology is what prompted my interest in genealogy. My youngest child
had a bone marrow transplant for cancer and the search for a compatible donor
fascinated me. I believe further advances and lower costs for DNA testing
will become an essential part of genealogy research.

These are just a few of the item copied from the local newspaper concerning
George Cockrell. He did contribute to the business growth in Onaga, Ks. in its
early days. But I think his main business attribute was as a "Horse trader".
Onaga Democrat 31 Dec 1885
Geo. Cockrell, an old resident of the county, is the principle horseman of
our city, having now in his stables a number of high priced thorough bred and
grade stallions and mares. Among these can be seen the thoroughbred
registered Percheron-Norman Stallion "Matchless" imported from France in 1880
by M.W. Dunham of Wayne, Ill. and purchased by Mr. Cockrell fo $2000.00. He at
the same time purchased the thoroughbred mare, "Oeida" then a colt and 1/2
sister to Matchless for the sum of $1200.00. Mr. Cockrell is a lover of fine
horses, and has probably done more to improve the grade in this section than
any other man.
Onaga Democrat 18 Feb 1886
Geo. Cockrell last Wed. sold his full blood Norman mare for $1100.00.
Onaga Democrat 4 March 1886
Uncle Geo. Cockrell has disposed of his 2 fine bay stallions, Jim and Jesse
to Mr. Frank Morris, taking in exchange Frank's residence property.
Onaga Democrat 18 March 1886
Frank Morris has sold his 2 bay stallions, recently purchased of Geo.
Cockrell to Mr. J. B. Chambers for the sum of $650.00.
Onaga Democrat 23 Dec 1886
We regret to learn of the serious illness of Geo. Cockrell.
Onaga Herald 1 May 1890
All widows that breed to my horse will pay only 2/3 of the regular prices,
as heretofore.
