Matilda Cockrell b. Feb 20, 1796 in Fairfax, VA was the daughter of John
Cockrell b. about 1765 in Farfax, Va. and Ann "Nancy" Chilton This family of
John Cockrell removed to Kentucky sometime around 1800. The two other
researchers I've found from this line disagree on just who exactly the sibling
of Matilda were. (They didn't have Matilda which made my collaboration
difficult) I will list those siblings of Matilda in which I have the most
confidence.
Catherine Cockrell b. 1786
Sally Cockrell b 1794
Flora Cockrell b Feb 22, 1796 (I haven't resolved the birthdates between
Matilda and Flora)
Shelton Cockrell b. 1798
Celia Cockrell b. 15 Oct 1799
Frances Cockrell b. 1800
Jemina Cockrell b. 1802
There may be other siblings. I've seen them listed in other's research.
I've seen the name Starks in emails on this mailing list. I believe it is a
different line from mine. Hopefully, those researchers will pick up on your
query and answer.
In a shameless act of self promotion, I am listing my webpage. My genealogy
page is very much under construction. However, I do invite everyone to visit
the page about my then 2 year old daughter's fight against cancer.

Descendant of John Cockrell b. about 1765 Fairfax, Virginia
Hello Fellow Researchers,
I have been making new contacts off the Internet again. This time a contact
with a descendant of Alexander and Sarah Cockrell. This Alexander Cockrell is
the son of Rev. Simon Cockrell and Magdaline (Vardeman) Cockrell.
As you all now know it is a project of the COCKRELL CONNECTIONS to establish
once and for all the issue of the paternity of Alexander Cockrell. As more
information comes in and is reviewed and examined we are further convinced.
Some deeds and a death certificate have surfaced.
The information that has been shared with me in this new trade covers many
facets of the Cockrell family. This one is a researcher who like Aunt Ida did
her work in the 1970's and used the same methods. She is Sharon Bremer and a
descendant of Francis Marion Cockrell whose obituary was published in the
COCKRELL CONNECTION and in that article Kay shows that this is the son of
Moses William Cockrell, son of Alexander Cockrell. I have a copy of his Civil
War record and that is interesting reading. Also a letter written in 1976 by
Mrs. Robert (Jean) Hailey outlining family connections.
In the letter of Jean Hailey a description of a relative coming on horseback
with a saddle bag containing "more money than we ever saw" from the estate
settlement of Moses Cockrell and paid to "my grandfather" has brought up a
question. An 1850 census record shows him owning $1,000.00 in real estate in
Cass County, Missouri. We do not think that Jean Hailey is still living or
likely to answer this question so we are asking the list to help.
Where did Moses William Cockrell die? Where will we find his probate records
to prove that Francis Marion Cockrell who marrried first Rebecca Minerva
Sellers then Percillla Matilda Morris and resided in Illinois, Missouri,
Arkansas and Oklahoma? Please email me on this subject.
More of what is in this information of interest are some deeds from Scott
County, Virginia for Simon and Polly Cockrell. This is Simon Cockrell Jr.,
son of Rev. Simon Cockrell. I have seen some research notes that state this
Simon Cockrell is the Rev. but this would prove otherwise. So if you need
clarification on this point email me, I am interested in making contacts with
descendants of this line.
Third is other information that was located in the research days of the 1970's
by Sharon Bremer on the mother of Magdaline Vardeman. Her parents were John
Vardeman and Elizabeth Morgan. A transcribed copy of the will of Thomas
Morgan naming his wife as Ester and listing 17 children, one of which is
Elizabeth Vardimon is finally in my hands. It was in a Bedford County,
Virginia Will Book dated April 1, 1774. Additional notes on the Morgan family
are included. This is exciting for me since this is my first bit of proof on
this ancestor. I expect some of you will want to email me about this.
I am in the process of trading packages with Sharon Bremer and truly enjoy the
exchange with this delightful lady. She is interested in getting back into
her genealogical research and has much more to share. I would like to find
this probate record of Moses William Cockrell for her. I think I am close
enough to a court house to go make copies of it. Where do I go?
Hope to hear from you soon

I have indexed the marriage records for members of the Cockrell
family in Saluda, Greenwood, and Lexington Counties in South Carolina and
would be glad to share the information. At the present time I would have
to snail-mail a copy if you are interested as I am not computer literate
enough to figure out how to put it on the net in a usable form.
Everything wraps so that even I can't easily decipher it when I try to post.
I am using a Works generated list with simple column style; anybody guide me
on copying it to the list?
The marriage records begin with 1911, which I understand is the earliest
date these records were required by law.
Looking for the parents of FRANCE COCKRELL, b.~1800 SC. She married first,
1822 Spartanburg, SC, Felix Turner and second, 1836, Robert Bailey. She
died in Spartanburg Co., SC in 1880.
The 1821 Spartanburg estate of HANNAH COCKRELL mentions the support of her
children. FRANCES COCKRELL, LUCINDA COCKRELL, and LEWIS COCKRELL are
mentioned and are probably her children. Hannah's birth date would have
been about 1775-80.
Does anyone have a Cockrell who married this Hannah and had children
Frances, Lucinda, and Lewis? Thanks for any leads or information.

Looking for my Harriette COCKRELL, b 1837 in Alabama (not sure where). One
thing very distinguishing about my Harriette, for some reason, she only had
one arm. Recognize?
Thanks
Hello fellow researchers,
This came from friends helping to locate more about Sally Cockrell Davis. The
help continues and I am not up to par for answering this one yet. Maybe in a

Are there any answers out there?

Hi Bella -
My DAVIS line has extended back over into Maryland pre-Revolution, and while
doing some digging there I came upon these names. Thought you might be
interested. I have been finding many Prince William names in Charles County
MD
and nearby. Wouldn't be surprised to find some of your folks over there as
well.

My connection to the Cockrells is through my gggg-grandmother Matilda
Cockrell. Through circumstantial evidence, I assumed she was the daughter of
John Cockrell born about 1765 in Fairfax, Virginia died about 1820 in Fayette
County, Kentucky. Recently, by finding a distant cousin I have confirmed that
Matilda, and therefore I, am from this line. My cousin is 93 years old. She
remembers visiting Matilda's son (my ggg-grandfather) Francis Marion Welch's
house as a child. I must admit that sort of put a chill in me. Here is this
woman who knew the grandson of John Cockrell born in 1765. Time doesn't seem
quite so distant when viewed in those terms.
Could someone from this line confirm for me if Benjamin or Joseph Cockrell of
Fairfax, Virginia is the father of John Cockrell b. about 1765? I've seen
both listed and am confused. A somewhat permanent state for me lately. :)
Thanks fellow researchers,
Barbara Welch Bradley
Do any of these names connect with any information any of you have found.
I am looking for my grandfather's uncle Peter Cockrell who was born March
1851 (probably in Edgefield district, SC) according to SC census records.
Just just disappears as a young man; my father was 85 when he died this
year remembered Uncle Peter from Texas visiting when he was a little boy.
The information here if from Panola County Texas census and Texas death
(index) information any connections out there? Interestingly, these
children's names are the same as my uncle's brothers and sisters and the
census indicate there were other children.

Good Day,
Thought you might want to hear an interesting story. The other day I
was talking to Carl Tomes in Grayson Co., Ky. He lives just outside
Shrewsbury on the road to Rabbit Flat, Ky. Carl Tomes is in his 70's
and lives in a house that is directly in front of land previously owed
by my Great-Grandmother, Polly Allen. I have never met her nor my
great-grandfather as they both died before I was born. Carl, in fact,
purchased the land after her death. He has since sold the land to
someone else but knew her and my grandfather and his brother very well.
Carl relates the following story:
He and his father were present as Polly (Allen) Cockriel was dying.
Carl's father being a minister was there to console and provide a
religious presence in her time of death. Polly is lying in bed with
death very near. Her finger where turning blue as death approached.
Carl's father comes closer to Polly and offers to to pray with her to
ease the transoition. Polly is reputed to say " I have never called
upon God in my life and do not plan to bother him now". She died.
What is the purpose of the story? Some could read this story and see a
heartless, Godless person. I chose to see someone strong in their
conviction and used to making their own way. Others could ask, How does
this effect me as a person some three generations removed? I suggest
that although I may disagree with her sentiments she has the right to
make those decision on her own. It has no effect on who I am or how I
may react in a similiar situtation. Each of us as we research our
ancestors may find facts that go against our current beliefs or values.
Our responsibity to our ancestors is not to make quick judgements based
on 1998 values. Ours is to attempt to understand why our ancestors may
have acted in the manner in which they chose. Very few of us can look
upon all the actions that we have taken and do not wish to have the
opportunity to "Do it differently".
My statement is to look at our ancestors with an open mind and not
impose our values on their actions.
Thanks for the soapbox. Those who have been on the list awhile know
that sometimes I have to get these things off my mind. I have to assume
that everyone on the list when reponding to a query or request has the
best interest in mind. We may chose to take the advice or reject it in
total. I feel it is counter productive to judge why a query was
answered and assume any other motive than to assist was the reason for
the the response. If a personal conflict does come up; and they will
they should be handled off line between the two people. The list is not
the place to air private problems. Part of my job is to mediate when
required. Please feel free to take advantage on this service.

Hello Cockrell researchers,
Allow me to say that after I post this msg I will probably not get any
additional assistance on my line, but something needs to be said.
Many of you know who I am because I had been searching for my g-grandmother,
Idella Cockrell, for some time.
I finally found her, cross-listed as a Cochran, with her family and then
noticed her family (the same individuals) noted as "Cockrell" in census
lists.
I posted my info, after finally finding my "Mary Idella" to the Cockrell
list, querying whether anyone had heard of my line. I rec'd responses, and
one in particular just struck me wrong. I will probably hear from this
individual with some type of explanation as to their bad day or whatever,
but, that's okay, it's not necessary. What has been said has been said, no
matter what a simple statement you thought you made.
I posted my "found" line to the list, and asked about an N.L. Coksell
married to Temperence. After mentioning the 1860 Lowdnes County N.L.
Coksells and then listing my line, I was told by "jolson" that this
particular individual didn't believe "mine" was a Cockrell.
First, allow me to say that because my line didn't jive with any one in
particular, doesn't mean that my family are not Cockrells. This they are.
I have the documentation to prove so. To be told that it is not believed
that mine are Cockrell people was a slap in the face, not only to me as a
descendent, but to me as an individual. Yes, I am African American, but
there were African American Cockrell/Cochrans, and any other variation of
Cockrell that you can find.
I've had some very nice people on the Cockrell list including someone who
came to the rescue so to speak when I first posted and someone asked why
they should be interested in "my" line (I guess it must have had something
to do with the African American status, I only know some of the msgs I rec'd
were not very positive, like African American Cockrells couldn't have
possibly existed (we do). Now, again, this is not all inclusive. I've had
some wonderful Cockrell descendents offer good advice and show willingness
to assist, but it takes one to remind people like me that well, we just
can't possibly fit in with this crowd.
Regardless to what anyone may feel, I do have Cockrells in my family, out of
Alabama and on into Mississippi, and if I get no further assistance because
I finally find my voice, so be it, but some of you all really need to check
yourselves. Family is family, regardless to who we are (we have to accept
people into our families for reasons we had no control over, but we're
looked at badly for some odd reason).
I appreciate the good of you, but for some of the others, heaven help us all
when we can't see that history meant some things happened you might not be
so proud to admit happened.
If you help in the future, fine. If you don't, also fine. I will still
find my Cockrell/Cochran family. I hope that those of you who feel like
there are no "different" people in your line, never have to have help from
those individuals.
A Cockrell in spirit,
but obviously not amongst some of the group! (if I sould upset, well yes, I
am. Jolson, your msg may not have seemed so harsh, but perhaps you need to
read it again--while you don't believe mine are "Cockrell" people, perhaps
maybe you need to be in my shoes). Again, this theme is not pervasive with
Jolson alone, I've gotten this attitude before.
Peace to you all.

The N.L. Cockrell listed in the 1860 Lowndes Co., Miss. census is Nathan J.
Cockrell, B-1811 in North Carolina, the son of Jonathan Cockrell & Ann Tant.
He died aft. 1870. Nathan's wife was Temperance Ann Horn, b-1824, NC. The
Alexander you list as his son is Alexander Grice Cockrell, b-2 mar 1836 in NC.
d-16 Apr 1891 in Texas. Alexander's wife was Sarah Calidonia Callie Kone who
he married 23 Jan 1868 in Lowndes Co., Miss. The other children you list are
Thomas Cockrell, b-1839, Ala. Martha A. Cockrell, b-1841, Al. and Louisa
Cockrell b-1846 Ala. I do not show a child named Alonzo.
I do not have an Alexander Cockrell age 32 in 1870 in Madison Co., Miss. nor
any of the children you list. I do not think this is a COCKRELL.
Hello,
The Cochran/Cockrell (Cockerille for me) line certainly rings a bell
here! Interesting post. My mother's maiden name is Cochran, and even
more coincidentally, her first name is Mary. (Of course, she was born
in the 1940's, not 1876.) My father is a Cockerille.
My Cochran roots stem to Ohio on this continent; my Cockerille roots are
deeply Virginian.
Regards,
Holly Cockerille
Does anyone recognize this line of COCKRELL/COCKSELL/COCHRAN, etc:
1860 Lowndes County (West Point MS) in the home of:
COKSELL, N. L., 50 yrs, m. Temperence, 37 yrs, both born in North Carolina.
He was wealthy farmer w/real estate valued at $1,200, personal value $8,000.
Also living in the home:
Alexander COCKSELL, 21 yrs, merchant, b. in Alabama
Thomas COCKSELL, 20 yrs, merchant, b. in Alabama
Loueza COCKSELL (age difficult to read: 13 or 93) b. in Alabama
Allonzo COCKSELL (age difficult to read: 10 or 70) b. in Alabama
If so, could Alexander COCKSELL be the Alexander COCKRELL, 32 m. to
Harriette 32 living in Madison County by 1870. Children: Eliza, Perry,
Leon, Alexander, Emma, George, Frederick Gray, James?
If you recognize, hope to hear from you.
Peace,

To the Mississippi and Cockrell researchers:
While I don't have my census sheets yet, I've managed to find my "Idella
COCKRELL's" family members.
For those of you who might not have heard, I was unable to find my
g-grandmother because she was listed in the census records as Mary Cochran.
After receiving a death certificate listing her father's name as Aleck (aka
Alexander COCKRELL), and a birth certificate listing her as "Mary Idella" MS
Dept of Archives/History located the family.
Also, Nancy Bible, are you out there (thank you so very much for everything)
found them in the 1870 and 1880 census records.
I now know my COCHRAN/COCKRELL line comes from someplace in Alabama and my
Aleck could have been the 21 year old merchant that resided with another
Alexander Cockell in Lowndes County in the 1860 census records.
These are the children of Aleck (Alexander) and Harriette COCHRAN/COCKRELL:
Eliza, b. abt 1854
Perry, b. abt 1857
Leon, b. abt 1858
Alexander (Aleck Jr), b. abt 1863
Emma, b. abt 1866
George, b. abt 1867
Frederick (Gray) b. abt 1869
James, b. abt 1870
Robert, b. abt 1873
Annie, b. abt 1875
Mary (my Idella) b. March 1876
Robert, b. abt 1878
Kattie, b January 1882
Harriette's parents were from South Carolina.
Aleck's parents were from Alabama
Does this line ring a bell to anyone?
Thanks so much and have a very nice day!

Hello Joan
My name is Jim Hastings, I have been researching the Hastings name from Tx.
and ran across a Walter Cockrell who married my grandfathers sister. I don't
know her first name but her maiden name was Hastings. They lived most of there
married life in McKinney Tx. between 1920 and 1950. Does this link to any of
you research?
Thanks
Jim

Regarding your list of McLennan County, Tx. marriages you listed a Jeff
Cockrell who married Miss Mimmia Walton 28 Jul 1895. I have him as
Jefferson Cockrell b-1876, Tx. the son of Willis Cockrell b-1837 and Francis
b- 1843. See 1880 Hill County, Tx census, ED 77.
Here is what I have on Miss. marriage by Hunting for Bears, Inc.
John cockrell & Melinda Ann Parks. He was the son of John S. Cockrell and
Patsy Lewis.
John Cockrell & Saah J. Hyde. She was the 2nd wife John Lewis Cockrell.
John Cockrell & Martha E. Armstrong. I have this marriage but no parents for
John.
J.R. Cockrell & Mary Ann Wells. He was the son of Benjamin Cockrell &
Elizabeth Robinson from SC.
Laura H. Cockrell & Van B. Hinton. She was the dau. of James Cockrell &
Martha Harris.
Moses B. Cockrell & Mary Parks. The son of Moses and Charlotte Hill of S.C.
Thomas N. Cockrell & Mary F. Fant. the same as the above.
Mary J. Cockrell & Davis Love. Dau. of James Cockrell & Martha Harris.
John B. Cockrell & Lida J. McMorries. Son of James Cockrell & Martha Harris.
James W. Cockrell & Shackleford. You are correct-this must be his first wife.
Rebecca Cockrell & James W. Holbrook. Dau. of James and Martha Harris.
Samuel cockrell & Catherine Puckett. Son of Wylie Cockrell & Mary. Wylie was
from N.C. Who is he and who are his parents?
Thomas W. Cockrell & Beatie Walker. Son of Thomas N. Cockrell & Mary Fant.
Mrs. Mary A. Cockrell & W.H. Smith. Mrs. Mary A. Cockrell was Mary A. Wells
who Married John R. Cockrell.
S.M. Cockrell & Janie Walker. This is Samuel Moses Cockrell the son of Thomas
N. and Mary Fant.
W.B. Cockrell & Emma Douglass. This is Walter B. Cockrell the son of Thomas
N. and Mary Fant.
I would welcome corrections and additions. If anyone can identify the
parents of the other Cockrells listed I would appreciate the info.
Jack
Addendum to my original message:
James William Cockrell may have married someone other than Sarah Ware. The
record included in the Noxubee Co, MS marriages shows she married James M.
Cockrell. There was a marriage for James W. in Jun 1868 to a Shackelford
woman. Perhaps this was his first wife. I do not believe that he married
anyone on 25 Dec 1853. He would have been only 12 years old.
