Hello All.
1. For all you Gen Francis Marion Cockrell researchers here is a piece
of data that may be of interest.
The grave of Anna E. Mann, the second wife of Gen Cockrell, is located
in Mercer County. Now owned by the Baptist Church. It was first known
as the Mud Meeting House. It is located only a few miles s.w. of Daniel
Boone's old Wilderness Road.
They show Ann's birth date as Dec. 12, 1840 . She died in Aug. 11,
1871.
Hope this is new information to someone.
2. It is known that John Cockrill of Nashville, Tn. was born in
Richmond County, Va. His first wife was Susan Tarpley and is the father
of Simon and Susan. Simon is the baptist minister.
He is thought to be the son of Thomas and Ann Cockrill, a planter, of
the same county. Can anyone verify or repute this information?

<< I have looked at many family trees and it looks like the Thomas Cockrell
whose wife was Tabitha Hatcher was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth as
John was. Of course the problem is there is no sources, that I know of
at the present time, that confirms any of this. Also one of these trees
shows Thomas father as Thomas Cockerill (wife Mary). Cockerill
supposedly embarked to America from England in 1711. He had several
deeds and land grants in Chowan County, NC.
Have you visited Nash Co., NC yet? I hope to be able to do that one of
these days. While there I would like to poke around in Northumberland
Co., VA also.
>>
Hi Larry,
I believe you are correct that Thomas Cockrell who married Tabitha Hatcher
was the brother of our John C. Cockrell that married Nancy Anne Winstead.
Again, you are correct in assuming that we have no documentation to prove
this relationship. Jack Olson and his brother have spent many years
researching the Cockrell family, and so has our host, Tom Cockerel, and this
is their conclusion. I hope someone had proof of these relationships.
There are a number of early Cockrells in Virginia. I have seen the early
Thomas Cockerill you mention, but do not know how he fits into the picture.
According to Tom Cockerel and Jack Olson, our first Thomas Cockerill was
born about 1624, and this date is baised on a land deed from Virginia. The
earliest Cockerill I am aware of is called John "The Coachman" Cockerill said
to have been born in 1610 in London, England and was a coachman in London
until he died before May 1650. Some researchers believe he had two sons,
John Cockerill born about 1635 in England, and died December 30, 1695 in
Northumberland County, Virginia, who married Hannah Cole, who died November
18, 1704 in Virginia. The other son is thought to have been Andrew Cockrell,
who died in St. Stephens Parish of Northemberland County, Virginia in 1674,
married Angel Corbell who died in 1727. Unfortuanately I have not been able
to connect our Cockrell line to these early families.
I have not traveled to Nash County, North Carolina, but did go to Guilford,
County, NC and to the state archives in Raleigh a couple of years ago. Perry
Cockerell, or one of his brothers did go to Nash County, NC and located the
land where our John Cockrell lived. He has deeds and pictures.
Keep in touch,

only been at it for about 3 weeks and I'm having a lot of
fun----learning and finding out new information. I have been to a LDS
church here, to two libraries and plan on going to Sutro Library in San
Francisco next week.
My main thrust right now is to try and confirm info I have on John and
Nancy Winstead and to go back beyond them. At the moment I have a
Thomas and Elizabeth Cockrell and a Thomas and Mary Cockerill before
them. I have no idea whether that's correct or not. I did discover a
book by the Winsteads and I have microfiche coming in to the local LDS
church. I'm hoping that will give me some additional info on John and
family.
I'm using Family Tree Maker 4.0 and I'm up to 400 names already.
From the questions you have posted it sounds like we are asking the same
questions. I would be very interested in your research and of course I
will share any thing that I have.

Hi Larry Ray Cockerell,
I know your father, and have visited in his home. I am the son of Bruce and
Melba Cockerell Green. First let me extend my deepest sympathies for your
desease you have contracted! It is incurable, and will get progressively
worse! About 5 years ago I was going to take all the material my parents had
collected and put it into a story for our family reunion. Well, now I spend
all my time looking for more information! Just kidding! It is great fun!
John C. Cockrell, war born about 1756 in either North Carolina or Virginia,
and married Nancy Anne Winstead in about 1778 in Northumberland County,
Virginia. John and Nancy Cockrell lived the later part of their life on the
Tar River in Nash County, where John died. His will was probated March 20,
1809, and the will in located in Nash County Will Book 1 on page 199. Nancy
Ann Winstead was the daughter of Joseph Winstead, born about 1725 in
Northumberland County, Virginia, and his wife Suzanna "Ann" Winstead. We do
not know her maiden name, but she was born about 1730 in Northumberland
County, Virginia, and she died about the same year as her husband, 1794 and
both are buried in Nash County, NC.
I have been attempting to identify the parents of John C. Cockrell for some
time, as have several of our cousins, Perry Cockerell in Ft. Worth, Ed
Cockerell in Abilene, Lon Cockrell Whealer in Houston, and Robert Park of
Houston. All are better researchers than, I am, but I worker longer hours
than they do! Until recently I was of the opinion that the parents of our
John C. Cockrell were Thomas Cockrell and his wife Tabitha Hatcher. Thomas
Died in Johnson County, NC in 1799 and his settlement statement showd a John
Cockrell, born about 1780. The problem was his wife shown as Polly Mary
Foulk. Robert Park and I were then researching the Edward Cockarill in
Virginia and NC to see how he fit into the picture.
About 3 months ago I made contact with Tom Cockerel, who has set up the
Cockrell list on the internet for us. He has sent me information showing
that the parents of our John C. Cockrell were Thomas Cockrell, born about
1720, and his wife Elizabeth Last Name Unknown. The parents of Thomas
Cockrell are shown as Samuel Cockerill, born about 1671, and his wife
Elizabeth Last Name Unknown. Both these people died in York County,
Virginia. The father of Samuel Cockerill is shown as Thomas Cockerill, born
about 1624. Another cousin, Jack Olson has also sent me simular data, and he
and his brother have been researching the family for many years. It is very
difficult to document people in the 1600's, but I am starting to attempt to
confirm what these men have discovered.
If you are not on the Cockrell list, I would strongly suggest that you
subscribe. Just send a message to COCKRELL-L-REQUEST(a)rootsweb.com and put
the word "subscribe" in the body of the message. You should receive a
welcome message almost immediately. You will then receive all messages

Hi Carolyn,
I enjoyed your message very much! It is always great to hear from a Blair
cousin, especially someone like you that has first hand information from a
family member. My grandfather would never talk about his family, and I have
had to dig what I have from others.
I will give you what I show for the children of Hugh and Mary Dawson Blair:
Hugh Blair married Mary Dawson in Ireland in 1738, therefore he was probably
born as late as 1720, but as I mentioned, some researchers show him born as
early as 1704. Like you, I believe he came to America in 1746, based on his
daughter, Jane "Jean" Blair Cummings' tombstone showing her birth at sea on
August 20, 1746. I believe the family first settled in Rising Sun,
Pennsylvania, as members of the Nottingham Company which helped the
Scotch-Irish emigrants come to America and then helped them find land to
purchase. About the only documentation for this theory is Lucy Blair's book
on John Blair of Guilford County, NC.
I show the children of Hugh and Mary Dawson as:
(1) Jane "Jean" Blair, born August 20, 1746 at sea, who married John C.
Cummings, Jr. about 1780. I do show that Jean Blair first married James
Endsley in about 1767. Jean Blair Cummings died April 21, 1839 and is buried
in the Round Hill Cemetery located in Marshall County, Tennessee and her
tombstone shows a poem proving her birth at sea. She was killed by lighting
that came down the chimney, so none or her family would sit close to the fire
place after her death.
(2) Mary Blair, born February 18, 1748 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,
married James Leeper on November 4, 1776 in Rowan County, NC. Mary Blair
Leeper died March 28, 1828 and is also buried in Round Hill Cemetery, as is
her husband.
(3) John "The Miller" Blair, born April 28, 1749 in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania, who married Jean Gamble on February 9, 1771 in Guilford County,
NC. I show they had 10 children, and Jean Gamble Blair died May 3, 1793 in
Blairsville, Washington County, Tennessee, later changed to Lowdon,
Tennessee. This was where the family bought the ferry from the Indians and
ran it for over 100 years. On Noverber 23, 1793 John Blair married Hannah
Carruthers in Washington County, Tennessee, and they had 4 daughters. THere
is probably more information about this family than any other Blair line.
There are a number of researchers in the Blair Society that have spent many
years researching this family, and have tons of information.
(4) Elizabeth "Betty" Blair, born about 1751, probably in Maryland, who
married Moses McCuiston, the son of Robert and Jean Ruth McCuiston, the wife
of my Major Thomas Blair. I show that Betty Blair McCuiston had 5 children:
Robert, Jean, Margery, Sarah, and Mary McCuiston.
(5) Martha "Mattie" Blair, born about 1751 in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania, and married William Cunningham on December 31, 1771 in Guilford
County, NC. I show that Mattie died in 1838 in Bedford County, Tennessee,
and William Cunningham died in April 1842 in Monroe County, Tennessee. I do
not know if she and Betty Blair were twins or their birth years were just
very close, and we do not have the exact dates.
(6) James Blair, born in 1755 in Rowan County, NC, and married Sarah
Elizabeth Cunningham, the sister of William Cunningham mentioned above.
Their daughter, Mary Blair, born August 17, 1775 married John Endsley, so as
you can see the families of the area obviously intermarried. I show that
James died about 1776.
(7) Hugh Blair, Jr., born in 1757 in Rowan County, NC married Jane McCaleb
on August 8, 1778 in Guilford County, NC. It is this Hugh Blair that also
moved to the Tennessee territory and signed the Wataga Petition, and was a
Col. in the American Revolution. I also have seen where he moved to Georgia.
As you will see some of our dates are in conflict, and I would love to
clarify as much data as possible. Any data you can add would be appreciated.
Like you, I am attempting to trace this family back to Ireland and then to
Scotland.
If you assume that Hugh Blair was the son of John Blair, then he was a
brother of Major Thomas Blair, born in 1738 in Ireland, who married Jane Ruth
about 1763 in Rowan County, NC. I have a land deed that proves that a John
Blair was the father of my Thomas Blair, but I can not prove that the John
Blair who died in Guilford County, NC was his father. The will of the John
Blair who died in 1772 does not mention a son, Thomas Blair, nor a son Hugh
Blair. The only son mentioned was a son John Blair, who was born about 1742,
probably in Ireland, who married Jean (Last Name Unknown) in about 1762 in
Rowan County, NC. I descend from this John Blair, born about 1742 and his
brother Thomas Blair, born 1738. The son of John Blair, born about 1742 was
also named John Blair, born October 22, 1767, and he married his first
cousin, Martha Blair, born February 12, 1771, the daughter of Thomas Blair
and Jane Ruth. This couple moved to Tennessee, and their daughter Tennessee
Blair, born about 1810 married Major James Rush in 1844 and came to the
Republic of Texas in the spring of 1845, where their daughter, Van Burena
Rush was born December 27, 1846. Vannie Rush married Archibald Cockerell
July 9, 1878 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas, and their son, Dr. Lonnie Lee
Cockerell, born June 4, 1879, was my mother's father.
Please let me know if you can add to the discussion of Hugh Blair being the
son or brother of John Blair. We are attempting to prove this relationship
and publish this documentation in the Blair Newsletter. I am also
researching the two Blairs that died in the Alamo, so if you can provide any
comments on the family of John and Samuel Blair that died in the Alamo,
please let me know.

Hi Carol,
Just in case you don't have the dates, Selah Pridgen, born about 1795,
married on March 15, 1815 Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell, born about 1795 in Nash
County, North Carolina.
Baldy Cockrell's brother, Vincent Cockrell, born about 1793 in Nash County,
NC, married on March 21, 1815 Elizabeth Pridgen, born about 1794 in Nash
County, NC.
A third brother, Joseph Jacob Cockrell, born about 1780 in Nash County, NC,
married before 1810 Piety Pridgen, born about 1788.
The three Cockrell brothers were the sons of John C. Cockrell, born about
1756, who about 1778 married Nancy Anne Winstead, born about 1758.
The three Pridgen sisters were the daughters of Drewry Pridgen, born about
1757, who married Selah "Sarah" Creekmore, born about 1773.
If others have additional data about these three couples please let the rest
of us know.

Hello,
Not dropped. Tom is in Kentucky until the end of the month gathering
information and so nothing is going on. I will be sending out something soon
from Platte County since Tom requested the information from Aunt Ida and she
found it for him. Have you seen the new stuff Jim Burgess is doing? Go look
he is updating every month now and there is stuff to keep us all busy for a

Hello All,
I have returned from vacation. It was very pleasant to be back home
with the family. We didn't do much on the genealogy but we did find the
graves of Benjamin Franklin and his family in Mount Sterling, Ky. As it
was on our way into Louisville we sidetracked off the interstate and
took a chance. I want to contact the local library and get some more
information. Probably tomorrow I will pass what I was able to get to
you.
When I returned we had three new members request to join the group.
Their requests were send directly to me. I have not counted the total
number of researchers but I am sure we have broken the fifty mark. We
welcome all interested researchers. Our rules are very simple. We
request that information be shared freely amongst fellow researchers.

I have a lot of further details that I've put in my Family Tree Maker,
if anyone is interested in a line. I also have a copy on line of the
document by F.N.Cockrell that I saw referenced sometime ago; it was
written in 1914 or so, is somewhat inaccurate, but has extensive data
that he compiled on any Cockrell he could find.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone interested in these early
Cockrells; I would like to find out more about the wives.

Hi Group,
Here is the data I promised. Archibald "Arch" Cockerell said he was born
December 24, 1824 near Atlanta, Georgia, and I have nothing except his
statement to prove this date. The other problem is the location, in that his
parents, Baldy and Selah Pridgen Cockrell never lived near Atlanta, Georgia
to my knowledge????
My father nick named Blady Cockrell "The Wanderer" since he shows up in a
different state every 10 year in the various census. Most records show that
Baldy and Selah Pridgen married March 15, 1815 in North Carolina and moved to
MIssissippi some time in the 1840s. These records show their son, Arch, was
born in Mississippi in 1822, not 1824 as Arch stated in the book, "Yearly
Rememberance of Boys in Gray." Arch also stated that he joined the
Confederacy in 1861 in Canton, Texas and drove cattle for the Army.
Arch Cockerell married Mary Minerva Hitson/Hittson on April 9, 1846 in
Itawamba County, Mississippi, and a child named Henry is suppose to have been
born that same year. Another Henry Cockrell is suppose to have been born the
next year. The problem with these first two sons, is that their son, John
Alexander Cockerell was born May 21, 1847 in Mississippi, and he lived until
March 7, 1907 when he committed sucide due to terrible migrane headakes. I
have a copy of his sucide note. As you can see, there is not enough time
between April 9, 1846 and May 21, 1847 for three children to be born, unless
twins were involved. As I mentioned in another message, there is no proof of
these first two children, except "Family Tradition."
Arch and Mary Minerva Cockerell came to Texas some time before 1850 and first
settled in Rusk County, Texas on land that Alexander Hittson, Mary Minerva's
father had claimed. Their second (or 4th) child, Jesse Thomas Cockerell was
born April 21, 1850 in Rusk County, Texas, as were his brother, William A.
"Billy" Cockerell, born August 23, 1852, and their sister Sarah A. Frances
Cockerell born October 30, 1854.
Some time before 1859 the family moved to Van Zandt County, Texas where Mary
Eliza Cockerell was born June 24, 1859. Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Cockerell was
born March 7, 1863 in Mabank, Texas which is where I grew up. Mabank is on
the border of three counties, Kaufman, Henderson, and Van Zandt, and the town
is in Kaufman County, Texas. Charles Morton "Charlie" Cockerell was born
January 30,1866, and is buried next to his father in the Elm Grove Cemetery
which is in Van Zandt County, Texas about 3 miles east of where Arch
Cockerell and his family lived.
Daughter, Martha Minerva "Mattie" Cockerell was born December 18, 1868, and
Laura Cockerell was born June 2, 1871. And finally, Dr. Elisha Edward
Cockerell was born March 8, 1875 as the last child of Mary Minerva Hitson
Cockerell who died September 4, 1875 and is buried in the Beard Cemetery near
the community of Odom in Van Zandt County, Texas. Both of her parents,
Alexander Hittson and Jamima Mary Jane Motley are buried in the Old Pioneer
Cemetery near Kemp, Texas in Kaufman County.
The only child of Arch and Mary Minerva Hitson Cockerell that I knew was the
youngest, Uncle Ed, who was only 4 years older than my grandfather, who was
the first child of Arch Cockerell and his second wife, Van Burena Rush, born
December 27, 1846. You will note that Vannie Rush Cockerell was about the
same age as her oldest step-son.
Vannie's first child was my grandfather, Dr. Lonnie Lee Cockerell, born June
4, 1879, after his mother married Arch Cockerell in Tyler, Texas on July 9,
1879. Arch was reportedly serving on a federal grand jury in Tyler when he
met Miss. Vannie Rush.
My grandfather and his half brother, Edward, went to Memphis, Tennessee in
1898 and took a 6 month medical course and received a license to practice
medicine. In 1901 they attended the first medical school in Dallas, Texas
and were members of the first graduating class of what became Baylor Medical
School.
My grandfather was one of the most unusual people I have ever known! He
started several hospitals in the samll rural towns of North East Texas, and
many boys he delivered are named after him. He received many honors in his
life, and was the most independent person I have ever known. He refused to
use a zip code or social security number, and drove his car until he was well
into his 80's. He owned the first auto in Eustace, Texas after riding a
train to Dallas, and driving his first car home. This trip of about 70 miles
took 3 days! He loved to argue more than anyone I have ever known, and
didn't care much which side of the argument he took, and could change sides
in an argument faster that you could tell he had changed! Papa died June 13,
1969, which was a Friday the 13th, and was also Father's Day, and my
grandmother, Elizabeth Eula Earnest died May 13, 1966, which was also Friday
the 13th. and Mother's Day!
I hope you enjoyed the history of my Cockerell family.

I was asked to give the information I have about the John Cockerill, born
aboaut 1635 in England, who married Hannah Ashton Cole. I have had this
information for some time, and do not recall much about the details. I
believe I got this information from the Dallas, Texas Library but do not
know the accuracy.
I show that this John Cockerill was the son of John "The Coachman" Cockerill,
and the brother of Andrew Cockerill who married Angel Corbell. I show that
John died in 1704 in Northumberland County, Virginia, and his wife died
before him, also in Virginia. I show their children as:
(1) John Cockarell, born November 22, 1669 in Virginia, who married
Elizabeth Presley about 1693 in Virginia. It was their son, Presley
Cockarell, born December 10, 1704 that was the first Presley Cockrell. I am
showing all the different spellings of the name that I have in my computer so
everyone can see the different ways the name has been spelled over the years.
(2) Elizabeth Cockarill, born November 21, 1671, and died before May 1719 in
St. Sttephens Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. I do not show her
husband's name, but I show her children were named Cockrell, so she may have
married a cousin.
(3) Edward Cockrell, born December 29, 1674, and died before 1747. No other
information on this man.
(4) Hannah Cockarill, born February 21, 1679, and died before 1719. No
other information on her.
(5) Richard Cockarill, born December 3, 1683, and died in 1762. No other
information on this man.
Please correct any of this data that is in error and let me know what other
infomation you may have on this Cockrell family.
