Dear Cockrell Researchers,
I recently received an email from the daughter of Clem Cockrell who
was an avid researcher on the Cockrell family in the 1930's and 1940's.
Her daughter is organinzing his records. You may want to contact her.
Her name is Martha Cockrel-Freeman and her email is

Hello!
My name is Martha Cockrel-Freeman & I just visited
your web site.....I'm very please that you have included my father,
CLEM COCKREL, as a contributor of geneology information. Since my
father's death, I have stored all of his research records at my home in
Antioch, TN. I just recently gave the original records to my cousin,
PAULA COCKREL-JARBOE, so that she can sort thru the original documents.
My father's last name was spelled: COCKREL.....or at least that is how
he spelled it. ( I'm assuming this is the same CLEMENT LEE
COCKREL from BOWLING GREEN, KY that you refer to on this website.)
I am very proud of my father's hard work and research. He contributed
greatly to creating a volume of Cockrel history that can be recorded
and documented.
Thank you for mentioning his name on your website.........and contact
me if you have any questions regarding my message:

Mary,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you about Presley Cockrell.
I only have three Presleys in my data base. The first is Presley, s/o John Co
ckrell & Elizabeth Presley. He was b. 10 Dec 1704, St. Stephens Parish,
Northumberland County, VA. He married Susannah Lyne in 1728/29, Lancaster
County, VA. Their son Presley was b. abt 1730, Northumberland County, VA.
He m. Sarah Sally Ball in 1753. They had a son Presley b. 1761 in
Northumberland County, VA. He married twice. 1) Sarah ????? 27 Feb 1788; 2)
Jane Morrison 4 May 1793. He and Jane had a son John b. abt 1798 in VA.
Unfortunately, he is suppose to have died unmarried by 1822 while underage
[which could mean that he was born after 1801, not 1798].
I have no Presley's on my line. I got this infromation from the following
three sources:
1. The Cockrell Path Through Northumberland and Lancaster Counties
and Some of the Families that Path Touched, by Isabel Gough, 1991;
2. Cockrells and Relatives, compiled by Leroy Connell Cockrell,
1973, partly from Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. 3;
3. Edward Cockrells Virginia Ancestros, c1630-1822, by William
Lombus, 1992.

Steve,
I have just got off the phone with Mr. William Preston Haynie and he
informs me that you are well aquainted with the Northumberland County
Historical Society. He also informed me that you are related to Carolyn
Jett. I was also informed that you spent some time in Northumberland
and looked at the Bible records of this family. It is also my
understanding that the fathers name was not listed in these records.
Mr. Haynie is going to ask Carolyn to get in touch with you and/or me
and provide the name of the father of Joseph Cockrell Haynie.
I believe that you and I had corresponded together on the Jett family of
Breathitt County, Ky. Still looking.
For others that may wish to correspond with the Northumberland
Historical Society the address is as follows:
Northumberland County Historical Society, Inc.
Box 221
Heathsville, Va. 22473
As an added note a COCKRELL reunion is held there in the 2nd or 3rd week
of July. This I was not aware until today.

Hello,
My name is Steve Jett and I think that I have 'talked' to a couple of
you before.
Here is my long shot question. My GGGGRandfather was Joseph Cockrell
HAYNIE. he was born in Northumberland County Virginia, and married
Laura Alverta Sutton on 28 Apr 1846 and he died on 9 Jan 1896. With his
middle name being COCKRELL, it is a hunch that his mother may have been
a COCKRELL, who married a HAYNIE in roughly the 1820 era.
Anyone with any leads. please let me know. Thanks for the help, and
good luck.

Dear Tom, The only person other than you from the Cockrell Clan who has
responded is Wilma Ellis. She has provided some useful information which
sent
me to the Library of Virginia to verify. I discovered that Simon's long
residence in Russell County (1787-1802) really seems to have involved
the
Maiden Spring area of present-day Tazewell County, Virginia. I copied a
bunch
of deeds involving Simon and am in the process of verifying this. My
next
project will be to search the records of Prince William County to see
when
Simon ( and his parents, probably) left there to move out into Southwest
Virginia. I have a note that he is listed in the records of Botetourt
County
in 1771 and also suspect that he might have been associated with the
Maiden
Spring area as early as 1781, but both of those suggestions will need to
be
verified. Will let you know what I find. If I can locate him from 1751
(his
birth) to 1802, that will be a big step in getting things off the
launching
pad. You mentioned Hampton; it is about 80 miles east of Richmond. If
your
son has any information, maybe I could meet him here or halfway between
Richmond and Hampton or, if need be, in Hampton. Simon is so
interesting, I
really am anxious to include him in volume 3. Virginia Baptist history
has
missed him altogether and he is too important to miss. Sincerely, Bill.

Hello, my name is Rose Cockrell Attebery. I am just starting out
researching the Cockrells and everything I have gotten so far from here
really has me lost. All I have is my father and grandfathers names.
Grandfathers name:
Wilbur Cockrell
b. July 8, 1908 d. Nov.1971
I think he was born in MN, but don't know for sure. He married an Erma
Laatch?. I have found two Erma Cockrells.
Erma Cockrell
b.Jan. 11, 1916 in OH? d. April 1978
Erma Cockrell
b. Aug. 25, 1897 in UT? d. April 1982
I do know that they had 14 or 15 children all together, and can give
their names if needed.
The more I read from here the more interested I get in finding out who I
am related to.
If someone can help me out I would really appreciate it very much.
Thank you,
Rose Cockrell Attebery
In one of a group of letters from Nancy Raine Tull in Clark Co, Missouri to
her parents, James and Nancy Pauley, in Hardin Co, Kentucky dated 30 Apr
1854, there is mention of a Fonrose Cockrell who was traveling Virgel Tull
to California. He was seven miles from St Joe, Missouri when he contacted
Nancy. Has anyone ever heard of Fonrose? I'm wondering if he ever made it
to California and am also curious to learn his relation to my ancestor,
Martha Cockrell. Any comments would be most appreciated. Wayne Kuntze
Hello all, My name is Casey Cockrell and I was born and raised in
Central California. I have been researching my family history for about
a year now and have enjoyed meeting a few of you along the way.
My grandfather, George Cockrell was born in Benton County Arkansas in
1923. He grew up on 160 acres with 9 brothers and sisters along Sugar
Creek in Brightwater, Arkansas. His father was James Nathaniel Cockrell
who, according to my records was born in 1834 in Virginia. I have not
been able to place him in Virginia at any time and have not met up with
anyone who has ever heard of him. Has anybody here ever heard of this
man? I have also heard from a contact that He could have lived in
Clinton County, Illinois where he married Mary Elizabeth Potts in 1872.
If anyone could help with any information I would greatly appreciate it.
I have enjoyed a lot of the old stories shared by people from many
different lines in the Cockrell family. Thanks Tom Cockerel for getting
this group together. I invite you all to visit my family page at

Hello Fellow Researchers,
I went to Cass County today to search for the grave of Simon Cockrell. We
went to the Historical Society and then to the Archives in the basement in a
library room there. It was all very confusing but we just went where we were
directed. A search of the records proved that many persons had searched for
the records on Simon B. Cockrell and family. In the Simon B. Cockrell folder
was one item I would like to share with you. The settlement of the estate of
Simon Cockrell September 28, 1843.
This one reads thus:
State of Missouri
County of Van Buren
SS. This affiant William Cockrell makes oath and states that to the best of
his knowledge and belief the names and places of residence of the heirs of
Simon Cockrell late of said County deceased are as follows: Towit, Moses
Cockrells heirs, one son Daniel place of residence not known at this time.
John Cockrells heirs, John, Morgant, Betsey, Sally; Breathitt County,
Kentucky. Simon Cockrell and Jerry Cockrell, Breathitt County, Kentucky.
Alexander Cockrell; Clay County, Illinois. Sally Davis, Clay County,
Illinois. Morgan Cockrells heirs, Nancy, Alexander, Tabitha, and Sally, and
one other name not known; Johnson County, Missouri. Joseph Cockrells heirs,
Nancy and Polly, Maryann and Sally, Jeremiah Vardiman & Francis Marion of
Johnson County, Missouri. Betsy Sargent of Illinois. James Cockrill of
Johnson county, Missouri. William Cockrell of Jackson County, Missouri. And
this affiant further states that said deceased died without a will and that
he will make a perfect Inventory of and faithfully administer all the estate
of said deceased and pay the debts as far as the assets will extend and the
law direct and account for and pay all assets which shall come to his
possession or knowledge.

do hereby nominate Isham Magom & Samuel E. Rowden to attend with William
Cockrell Administrator of the estate of Simon Cockrill deceased at the last
abode of said deceased to assist the said administration in opening the
papers and money of the deceased ans making an inventory of them given under

We S. E. Rowden & Isham Mayers do certify that no papers or money of the
deceased before mentioned, viz, Simon Cockrell came to hand to open or
examine given under our hand, this 20th December 1843.
Signed, Isham Mayers, by his mark.
Signed S.E. Rowden.
These were hard times and it is possible that Simon was buried on the
property of his son William or the residence where he died. From the Census
of Johnson County we know that the unnamed child was James Cockrell, why
William Cockrell son of Morgan is not named we do not know. There was much
to discuss on the hour drive home after visiting the Freeman Cemetery at
Freeman, Missouri to view the graves of our Cockrell ancestors as shown to us
by a cousin we met today. She gave us the physical address of the Cockrell
property there still in the family and a descendant named Cockrell.
These documents as part of the records of the County were kept hidden during
the Border Wars in the blacksmith shop under the anvil for safekeeping. Many
records were hidden in peoples homes and in such diverse places as under beds
and in trunks, to name places that the records keeper cited to us today.
Our next clue is Paola, Kansas to find records of earlier date that are
housed there.
We have a clue of Jackson County as well and since I live in that county will
not have to plan as carefully for the trip. The kids can stay home with
their great grandfather for that long.
More to come. I hope you will throw out your discussion here so we can all
enjoy the fun.
Sincerely,
Bella M. Hughes

Emery M. Cockrell is one of the oldest settlers in the Kaw River Valley of
Shawnee County. He located in Mission Township of that county in 1873. For
forty years or more his business interests have been chiefly farming, and he
has developed and improved some of the best land found in that township. Mr.
Cockrell is also widely known in Shawnee County as a public spirited citizen,
has filled several offices of trust and responsibility, and for a number of
years has made his home in the City of Topeka.
He was born in Wayne County, Ohio, August 21, 1850. He is one of three living
sons in a family of four whose parents were John and Esther Ann (Seeley)
Cockrell. He comes of a very old and substantial American Lineage. John
Cockrell, his father, was a native of Virginia, a son of Robert Cockrell, who
moved from the old Donimion to Ohio in 1840 and spent the remainder of the
life there as did also his son John. There is also a record of many
gernerations of the Seeley family in America. They came to the American
Colonies before the Revolution. Seeley's fought with the colonies in the
struggle for independence, and among others Captain Isaac Seeley commanded a
company, and was killed at the battle of Danbury in 1777. He was
great-great-grandfather to Mr. Cockrell, Mr. Cockrell's mother was born in
Lorain County, Ohio.
>>>>>
On December 1, 1872, Mr. Cockrell married Mary C. Eckert. In the spring of
1873, following the advice of the famous New York Tribune editore, this young
couple came west. Arriving at Topeka, Mr. Cockrell bought eighty acres in
Mission Township of Shawnee County from the Santa Fe Railway Company. This
land was apart of the old Pottawatomie Indian Reserve. It was several year
before the land had reached a stage of successful productivity, and in the
meantime during the winter Mr. Cockrell taought school in districts adjacent
to his home.
>>>>>>>
By his first wife Mr. Cockrell had two children: Viola M., who died at the
age of eight year; and Anna Ethel, the widow of Dr. George P. Lux and now
living in California. The mother of these children died in January, 1880. Her
father Daniel Eckert, who came to Shawnee County, Kansas about 1873,
afterwards moved to Los Angeles, California, where he is still living at the
age of eighty-four.
In July, 1881, Mr. Cockrell married Frances G. Eckert, a cousin of his first
wife. Her father, Henry Eckert, spent his life as a farmer in Richland County
Ohio. There are also two children of the second marriage: Grace M., now Mrs.
Edward G. Robertson of Wichita, Kanas; and Helen G., wife of Grover Pierpont,
the present judge of the Court of Wichita. Merrie Pinick
For Everyone:
As I was researching my Morgan line, I came across a quote that I think
everyone will appreciate, and we should all keep in mind. It is from a
Book entitled "Genealogies and Their Moral," but as all I have is a xeroxed
page, I do not know the author.
"Nothing seems, at first sight, less interesting or less instructive, than
a genealogical table, a mere register of names and dates. But such a
passage as [those] which we have quoted--so picturesque, so suggestive, so
touching, so dramatic--when it occurs in the midst of these dry records,
throws out an electric light in every link in the chain of generations.
Each of those names in the table is the memorial--perhaps the only
memorial--of a human heart that once lived and loved; a heart that kept its
steady pulsations through some certain period of time, and then ceased to
beat and mouldered into dust. Each of those names is the memorial of an
individual human life that had its its joys and sorrows, its cares and
burthens, its affections and hopes, its conflicts and achievements, its
opportunities wasted or improved, and its hour of death. Each of those
dates of 'birth,' 'marriage,' 'death,'--O how signifigant! What a day was
each of those dates to some human family, or to some circle of loving human
hearts!"

Hi Bob,
Our leader, Tom Cockerel, is the expert with your question, but I will take a
crack at it. Edward Cockrell MAY have been the son to Thomas Cockrell.
Edward was apparently a hog thief, and abandonded his wife and family. She
had to through herself on the mercey of the court over the thieft of the
hogs!
The Thomas Cockrell who died in 1799 in Johnson county, NC is not the same
Thomas Cockrell. The Johnson county Thomas married Tabitha Hatcher, and is
believed to be the brother of my John C. Cockrell that married Nancy Anne
Winstead.
That should get the messages flowing!

Hi Cuz. I am related to Samuel Cockrell, the brother of your Simon. Samuel
Cockrell Married Martha Hatcher. I may be mistaken, but I believe that most
of what you have seen on the Thomas Cockrell/Tabitha Hatcher family has come
from research that my brother and I have conducted over many years, or
prehaps it has just paralled your research.
I have a good deal more on this family which I will be more than happy to
share.
I believe I have more on the children of the children of Thomas & Tabitha.

Hi Tom,
This is the second time I have typed this message because of AOL going off
line and my message screan went blank! &#@%##%!!!
I have been very busy lately and haven't had time to post a message lately,
and have been communicating with the Pridgen list the last few days and do
have a story for you. You will recall that Archibald "Baldy" Cockrell
married Selah Pridgen, who was the daughter of Drewery Pridgen and Selah
Creekmore. Well, my grandfather, Dr. Lonnie Lee Cockerell, the son of Arch
Cockerell, would never talk about his ancestory, except to tell me that his
grandmother was 1/2 American Indian. That is all the information I had to
work with, and that is also one of the reasons that I researched the family
of Selah Pridgen.
Last week a Pridgen researcher posted a message that Drewery Pridgen is
reported to have sired a child by a slave, and a black Pridgen had contacted
this researcher to obtain data on Drewery Pridgen. I responded to the story
with my grandfather's Indian story, and another lady came back with a posting
about Drewery Pridgen's uncle marrying a Sarah Pitchlyn who was the daughter
of Aiahnichih Ohoyoh, who was the daughter of Choctaw Chief Mosholatubbee.
Last year an our Cockerell Family Reunion I was discussing this Indian story
with my Mother's family, and one of my mother's sisters-in-law said that we
were Choctaw, and I mentioned that I had never heard the name of a specific
tribe before, and neither had my mother. I asked my aunt where she heard
about the Choctaw name, and she said she had always know we were part
Choctaw.
I wonder if any of our Cockrell group has any information on this story?
