I received this information from another researcher. Does anyone know
who may be the parents of this Thomas Cockerill. Does anyone have futher
information on a Cockerill/Sanford/Triplett connection?
Thomas Cockerill (1720-1777or 78) married Anne Sanford(1720-25 d. bef.
1777) Anne daughter of Robert Sanford III and Mary Muse.
Children:
Elizabeth Cockerill married 1769 to Francis Triplett (1744-1823) of
Loudoun, VA.
Jeremiah Cockerill married Katerine Lewis. Had daughter Eleanor
Cockerill(1776-1841) who married in 1800 to Simon Triplett(1774-1810).
In a message dated 97-12-25 20:23:20 EST, you write:
<< "Nothing is known of any of the family except one boy, whose name was

Hi Cathy,
I show the siblings of your Allen Cockrell were:
(1) Irwin, born about 1803;
(2) Needham, born about 1811, who married Sarah Endley;
(3) Thomas, born about 1807, who married Martha.
(4) Sarah, born about 1810.
I am attempting to document the parents of your Thomas Cockrell, that married
Tabitha Hatcher, and my John Cockrell, that married Nancy Anne Winstead were
Thomas born about 1720, who married Elizabeth. I would be very interested in
any information you might have to prove this relationship.

>From Tom Green,
I show your Allen Cockrell was the son of William Cockrell, born about 1772 in
Johnsson County, NC, who married Theny Bagley on March 1, 1802. William was
the son of Thomas Cockrell, born about 1745, who married Tabitha Hatcher.
It is believed that this Thomas Cockrell was the brother of my John Cockrell,
born about 1756, who married Nancy Anne Winstead.

[ok, great....got lots of 'go aheads'....so to continue.....]
"Second child was Jane, born about 1844." [abt 1839] "Think she married
Henry Barrett about 1862, and think they had one son, Allen, who died.
Died about 1865. Third child was John Allen Mortimer born April 24, 1846
in Alabama. He married Elvira McMurrian (or McMurry)
about 1867. Lived near Rosebud, Ark. They had 8 children: William Allen
2nd, Johnnie Green, Lula, Robert Lee, Edward, Belle, Charles and Hattie.
The family moved to Clarksville about 1890, and to Westover in 1906,
where John Allen died Jan 26, 1926, and his wife died Sept 15, 1929.
Fourth child was Benjamin Thadeous Franklin who was born in Alabama
April 25, 1848. Moved to Georgia when quite young, later moving to
Rosebud, Ark., where in 1869 he married Lucy Alford Connell. They
settled near the old homestead, where they lived until the fall of 1885
when they moved to Clarksville, Texas. Lived there until the Fall of
1900 when they moved to Floresville, Texas, and then in 1911 moved to
Westover, where his wife died on Jan. 28, 1916. To that union 12
children where born: Alonso Gershom, Martha Eliot, Joseph Mortimer,
Frederic Payne, Christopher Columbus, Zillah Blanche, Ophia, Angus
Hardee, a still born girl, Allen Alexander, Laura Eleanor and Charles
Alford.
Fifth child was Elizabeth who was born about 1850 in Georgia. She was
married to Henry Barrett about the year 1869, and to that union 2 girls
where born.Shortly afterward her husband passed away. Some years later
she married John Wesley Stewart, and they settled near Rosebud, later
moving to Clarksville where she died in 1907. Three girls were born to
that union.
Sixth child was James Addison Valentine born April 7, 1853 in Georgia.
On July 7, 1882, he married Martha A. Presley, near Rosebud Ark, where
they lived until 1884 when they moved to Jones County, Texas for one yr.
Next year was spent in Ellis County, and then moved to Clarksville.
About 1899 he moved to Wilson County, where he died in 1912. One child,
Homer, was born to this union." [3 girls died in infancy.]

Hi Bob Franks,
I am attempting to save and delete many hundreds of E-Mail messages I have
received over this past year, and came across your message to me July 27,
1997. I hope I answered your message, since we are working on the same
Cockrell line. I am a descendant of John Cockrell that married Nancy Anne
Winstead, and it is my opinion that my John was a brother of your Thomas
Cockrell that married Tabitha Hatcher. I quickly visited your Web Page again
to see if you had updated it, but since you have given so much data it will
take me a little longer to see what you have discuvered since I last visited
your Web Page. I recall that I had seen your Web Page before you sent me the
message about your family, and I had done some research into the earlier
generations, and did find the William Thomas Cockrell that may have been the
father of our Thomas and John, as well as Jacob Cockrell, who is also believed
to have been a brother. Like you, I have not been able to document the names
of the father of our next generation, but have discussed this with Tom
Cockerel and Jack Olson, and they seem to believe that the parents were Thomas
and Elizabeth Cockrell, and the father of this Thomas was a Samuel Cockrell,
and his father was another Thomas Cockrell. Both men have done considerable
research and do have a lot of circumstatioal documentation of these early
generations, but no definite proof. I like you, would love to prove who the
parents of my John Cockrell were. If you have discuvered any new information
I would be very pleased to hear from you.
In you July message you mentioned that you did not have documentation of your
Thomas Cockrell, If this is still the case you might want to review the
records of Johnston County, North Carolina, since this is where I located the
settlement of Thomas Cockrell's estate. He died there in 1799 and had a
considerable estate which is mentioned in great detail in the estate
settlement documents. If I can assist you, please let me know.
Merry Christmas!

[The letter goes on to say...]
"In the early years of the 19th century a 'Billie' Cockrell left his
father's family in one of the Carolinas, and presumably went to Alabama,
where he married." [current information has it that Allen's father
William married in Johnston Co, NC, March 1. 1802, to Theny Bagley.]
"Nothing is known of any of the family except one boy, whose name was
Allen and who married a Miss Sallie Harlin. A few years after they were
married, they moved to Georgia," [again, current info is that they
married in Coweta Co, GA, 4-18-1839, and her name is listed as Sarah
Adeline Harlan.] "where they lived for a few years, after which they
moved to White County, Arkansas where they lived until their death about
the year 1880." [Allen died 28 Oct 1879 in Faulkner Co, Ark, Sarah died
abt May 1883.]
"To that union were born the following children, William (who was killed
in the Civil War)," [battle of Vicksburg] "Jane (who died young), John
A., Elizabeth, Benjamin Franklin, Emeline, James V., Othella and Richard
A. Cockrell. Benjamin Thadeous Franklin Cockrell was born April 25th,
1848. Ben Cockrell married Miss Lucy Alford Connell, oldest daughter of
Alex & Nancy Carlile Connell." [Nancy Carlton] "Other children of the
Connells were Christopher C., Theresa, Alexander H. and Jennie Connell.
The Connells were also from Georgia. Lucy Connell Cockrell was born July
9, 1859." [1850.] Children born to Lucy and Ben, were Lonnie, Martha
(Mattie), Joseph, Frederic Payne, Chris, Zillah, Ophie who died in 1889,
Hardee, Allen, Laura & Charlie." [The names are currently recorded as
Alonso Gerham, Martha Elliot, Joseph Mortimer, Frederick Payne,
Christopher Columbus, Zillah Blanche, Angus Hardee, Alexander Allen,
Laura Elnor, & Charles Alfred. There is an Ophie Cockrell buried in
White Rock Cemetery in Red River Co, TX, 1881-1889. Previously we did
not know who she was.]
"Believe Billie Cockrell was born in North Carolina about 1775." [1772]
"Left home when a young man and went to South Carolina, where he changed
the spelling of his name to Cocheral. Do not know where he married, not
to whom. Think he had 2 or more children, one of who was William Allen,
and think Needham was also a son." [married Theny Bagley, children;
Allen, b.1803, Thomas, b. 1807; Needham, b. 1810; & Sarah, b. 1810.]
"William Allen" [didn't have the 'William' before, just 'Allen'] "was
born about 1800 in South Carolina. Later moved to Alabama, where he
married Sallie Harlin about 1825." [The marriage of Allen and Sarah is
recorded on page 159 of marriage book 'B' in Coweta Co., GA, and dated
18 Apr 1839. Allen was born 1803 in Johston Co, NC, don't know about
this South Carolina/Alabama business.] "Had 9 children, the oldest of
whom where born in Alabama, others in Georgia, and the rest near
Rosebud, Ark. Their first was William, Jr, who was born about 1841. He
was never married, and was killed in the Civil War." [Actually Jane was
born first, abt 1839, and William in 1842.]

[I have some interesting, though unreliable information to share.]
[In July 1973, Leroy Connell Cockrell, Jr. compiled a family history
entitled "COCKRELLS and RELATIVES" starting with Allen Cockrell, born
1802-03 in North Carolina. In it he refers to a letter from Allen
Alexander Sr, grandson of Allen. I have an original typed letter,
which, though unsigned, may be the letter or a typewritten transcription
of the original. I will post some of it now and more later. The letter
is typed on the letterhead of Clarence M. White, Licensed Real-Estate
Dealer, Farm and City Loans, Clarksville, Texas. (No date).]
"An uncle of mine, James Adison Valentine Cockrell spent the year of
1885 in Jones County, Texas, where he met 'Judge' Cockrell, who was
keeping a geneolgy of his family, and he at once made inquiry of my
uncle about his ancestors. Upon learning that his grandfather's name was
'Billie' he recognized our branch as descendants of the lost Billie
Cockrell, who left his home in North Carolina (?) and went to South
Carolina. He had changed his name to Cocheral, which we kept up til
1887.
Another thing that caused the change of spelling was that in the
Fall of 1885 my father[Benjamin Franklin Cockrell] had moved from Mt.
Vernmon, Ark. to Red River Co., Texas, and early in the next year we
learned that a couple of families of Cockrells lived about 35 miles
South uf us near Mt. Vernon. During that year they came to visit with
us, when it was learned that they were related to us, but do not
remember the connection. Their names were Tiry and John J, and spelled
their names Cockrell. Father later visited with Tiry and John, and then
correspondence was had with them for some time, until in 1900 father
moved to Wilson County, and in 1907, I moved to Eastland County, so we
have lost trace of each other.
Mention should also be made of Bardon Cockrell, who, in 1870's lived at
Quitman, Ark., which is near Rosebud, where we lived. They were related,
but do not know the exact relationship.
Have heard my father [Benjamin Franklin Cockrell] speak of 'Uncle
Needham Cocheral', but I never saw him.
Up until I was 14 years old, all of Grandfather's [Allen Cockrell's]
family lived within a radius of five miles from the old home. An uncle,
J.V., was the first to break away, when he moved to Waxahachie [Texas].
The next year father moved to Clarksville, Texas, and within 10 years,
the entire family were all living around us. Then in 1911, father moved
to Westover, they were nearly all there, with 4 of Grandfather's
children buried there. The younger generation scattered."
[More to come]
I hope this helps someone. I found it serching the web today.
