Need information on Thomas Cockrell who was married to Francis A Buchanan
b. 1798 and George Cockrell married to Rhoda Catherine Buchanan. I believe
they were in Schely Co Georgia or thereabouts. I believe these may be
long lost uncles.

To my Cockrell cousins:
Please take this information for what it's worth with you. I received a
few weeks ago a letter from a Mr. Claude Cockrell Jr. who asked me for
whatever Cockrell family information I could supply him. He also asked me
for the location of where I lived and my personal phone number. He said he
was in the Dallas Health Unit Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, and I could send
it to him there or I could send it to his friend who was living in his home
in Memphis, TN. He also gave me a phone number which I could call this
friend. Claude wrote he wasn't on the internet but said a girl friend of
his was, and that she had supplied him with my mailing address.
I won't say on Rootsweb what all he said about his own family connections,
but they were fantastic. Something told me that I wasn't hearing the
truth. Much of what he said about his family history was history we have
all read about and he had the facts wrong. So I did some checking myself
on the internet and found that his return mailing address in Fort Worth to
actually be a Federal Prison Medical Center.

<< Yesterday while having our Thanksgiving Dinner, my soon to be, 84 year-
old Mother was telling us about growing up in Haw River, NC. My
grandchildren were amazed at the names of the little different mill
villages, many which were hilarious to them, also to find that both their
great-grandmother and grandmother were born on RED SLIDE! Can you imagine
teen-agers laughing at these names? >>
Hi Louise,
Thanks for posting the names of the various mills in your part of North
Carolina! Two years ago, I talked my wife into a 2 week genealogy trip
through Arkanasas where my greatgrandfather, William M. Green fought and was
captured at Ft. Hinman, located at Arkansas Post on the White River. We then
went to Jackson, Tennessee, where my 3rd great grandparents, John and Martha
Blair lived in a community named for them, Blair's Chapel, located south of
Jackson, Tennessee. We next spent 2 days in Nashville, Tennessee, where John
"Scalpy: Blair and his brother, Samuel Ruth Blair came in about 1785 to help
settle the new territory and help bring it into the United States in 1796.
These men were brothers of Marth Blair mentioned above. We did not get to
visit Cockrell's Neck outside of Nashville, Tennessee, names for one of my
ancestors.
We next went on to Loudon, Tennessee where several Blair ancestors founded
what was first named Blairsville, and they purchased an interest in a ferry
being operated by a local Indian family. These Blairs operated this ferry for
over 100 years, until after the bridge was built over the river. We went from
there to the school where Sam Houston taught school, as I am a big Sam Houston
fan. I am trying to indentify the families of John and Samuel Blair that were
killed in the Battle of the Alamo, and they may have been sons of one of the
Loudon, Tennessee Blair families.
We next went to Waynesville, North Carolina to look for William Green, my 3rd
great grandfather who died in Haywood County, NC March 2, 1837. We then went
on to Burke County, NC where William Green raised most of his family, and then
on to Greensboro, NC where my 4th great grandfather, Major Thomas Blair fought
with the Guilford County Militia at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. We
then went on to Raleigh, NC to visit the archives, before returning home.
The trip was great, and we found a "ton" of material, but we did not get a
chance to locate Lindley's Mill where my William Green fought, nor did we get
to visit Hillsboro, Orange County, NC where my William Green first joined the
American Revolution in 1779. We did not get to visit Nash County, NC where my
3rd great grandfather, John Cockrell lived on the Tar River. We also did not
get to visit Moore's Creek Bridge where my Thomas Blair fought. We didn't get
to visit any of the Battle of Alamance sites, where several of my Blair
ancestors participated. We didn't get to visit the Alamance Cemetery, where
James Blair was buried in 1771. We passed by the exit to the site of the
Battle of King's Mountain, where Col. James Blair fought, after being wounded
as a Relay Rider to help gather the men at Quaker's Meadow, to prepare for the
battle. A wonderful poem was written about his ride. We also passed the exit
to Salisbury, NC where it is believed that the father of my William Green once
lived. Various members of my family have been attempting to identify his name
for over 30 years!
All of this just to emphasize the importance of knowing the "lay of the land"
before you go to visit an area. If it were not for nice people like you, the
rest of us would not know where to go to find the places where our ancestors
once lived. I hope to make another trip to your beautiful part of the country
soon, and I want to learn as much about the various areas where my ancestors
lived as possible, before the trip.
Thanks again for your posting, and I for one ask that you continue to post the
locations of all the historic sites you know!
Thanks again!

Good Day,
I hope that each of you had a great Thanksgiving day.
I am announcing that a volunteer is needed to assume the duties of
listmaster. As many of you know my wife and I are living in Mass. I have
been rather ill for some time and we have decided to move back to (roots)
Kentucky. The move is not planned till mid-Jan but I wanted to alert you
in advance.
The responsibilities will not be too time consuming. You will receive
messages asking that persons be either added or deleted from the list. I
will show you the path name and password to access the page where the
information is placed.
It is important that we keep the page active. In the recent past the
activity level has been slow. I am assuming that the holidays and
personnal activities account for the level of activity. Still their are
others that do use the list and have been rewarded for their contact.
I would like to turn the listserver over no latter than Jan. 1st., 1997.
You may contact me at kytrace(a)postoffoce.worldnet.att.net.

Jim Burgess,
Thank you so much for contacting me and letting me know you are still
around kicking. Since I made a public statement here on Rootsweb that you
may have dropped back on your Cockrell research for a while, I feel it's
only fitting for me to make a public apology the same way. I checked out
your new "Cockrell Collection" pages and they are great. The statement I
made couldn't have been anything further from the truth. I went through
two computer crashes this year and I must have gotten your replacement web
page addresses from one of my very old backups. Because for a while there,
they looked like the web pages you had over a year ago. Then a little
later they didn't work at all. I will update my personal web page I have
with GeoCities with updated links during the holidays while I'm off work.
I know you'll appreciate that.
One thing I found out tonight about your "Cockrell Collection" page is that
if I go directly to your "Cockrell Collection" page without first going
through your main "Burgess" page, the links on your "Cockrell Collection"
page are not all there and some that are, don't work. This may have also
been one of my past problems when trying to access your Cockrell page. Is
Bill Gates playing tricks on you like he did on me? I posted my personal
home page on GeoCities using MS software. I couldn't understand why so
many people couldn't access anything but the wall paper. I was running MS
Explorer and I didn't have any trouble. Then I loaded Netscape and tired
to access it and had problems. Later I learned that "Good Old Bill" puts
what is called "X Controls" in his software. This is just one of the
little things he's doing to try and control the market.
If there are any genealogist out there that needs a break, they should
access Casey & Liz's Cockrell web pages and view the newest Cockrell triplets.
<http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/8265/>
On my own web page, I thought it only fitting to put three freshly hatch
baby chicks next to their link.
Warm regards to you and anyone else that reads this, and I hope you didn't
over stuff yourself with turkey this Thanksgiving.

Kay Cockrell Kazmar,
I understand from my contact with Jack Olson & Lon Cockerell Wheeler, that
you are researching the Alexander Grace Cockrell line. I am his great
grandson and I have been trying to find someone on the internet for over a
year now researching the same name line. I have posted my search with
Family Tree Maker.
<http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/c/James-H-Cockrell/index.html>
Jim Burgess had me posted for a while on his "Cockrell Connections" page,
but he seem to have drifted away (at least for now) from his Cockrell
research. Like most of us I'm sure that he finds it's very hard get really
involved with this addicting family research and still continue on with his
daily life.
I have bible records filled out by Sarah Calidonia (Callie) Kone, wife of
Alexander Grace Cockrell. I also have the draft copy of an application
form she filled out for membership in "Daughters of the War 1812". She,
her husband and other Cockrell members of this family is buried in section
E-2 in Glenwood Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
I am new here on Rootsweb (Jack Olson signed me up) and I don't know if I
am doing this right. Please contact me as soon as you receive this message
and tell me you received it.

Howdy cousins!
Has anyone discovered who the parents are of Thomas Cockrell,
b. abt 1745, d. before 3-26-1799, m. Tabitha Hatcher?
His 2nd son, William Cockrell, b. 1772, m. Theny Bagley 3-1-1802 is my
ancestor. (Thank you, Bob Franks.)
I live in Dallas. My ancestors moved from North Carolina, through
Georgia, Arkansas, then to Texas around 1900. Many are buried in
Westover Cemetery in Baylor County, Texas. I'd like to post a Cockrell
family history in Jim Burgess' Cockrell Collections when possible.
Happy Thanksgiving! Cathy Cockrell Moore

received any comments as yet but wanted to stop any mispreceptions before
they came up.

I have just finished a booklet consisting of 560 Cockrell Census Index
entries of various spellings from 1800 through 1840. These were taken from
CD's and reentered in data base. I have sorted them alphabetly and by
states&county. These index's give page for record. Not all states and
counties for every year. This booklet is 44pages long.
I have also completed marriages data base from CD"s there are 591 prior to
1860. These are sorted by name & by state and county. With use of wildcards
I have been able to list a lot of unusal spellings of Cockrell Two copies of
census and marriages will be sent together for $10.

You posted the family of Joseph Cockrell on 23 Oct 97. I have been meaning
to get an answer to you but have been really buried for the last month.
This line is my direct line and I agree with your family for Joseph, s/o John
Cockrell & Sarah Gill and grand s/o John Cockrell & Lucretia Neal, with one
minor difference.
You have a son for Joseph named John who is married to Catherine Nichols in
KY. According to the research I have done and working with Jim Burgess on
connections, I have that John married to Ann "Nancy" Chilton, d/o Sturman
Chilton whose will mentions his daughter Ann Cockrill wife of John. John and
Ann have, I believe, 11 children, as follows:
William Cockrell b. Loudoun Co., VA
John Shelton (phoentic spelling for Chilton?) not John A. b. abt 1777 in
Loudoun Co., VA m. to Catherine Nichols on 21 Oct 1802 in Wondestra, Clark
Co., KY. I have some desc.
Janet Cockrell (Loudoun) m. John Rice
Elizabeth Betsy Cockrell m. William A. Niblack. I have many desc on this
line from a Niblack researcher who ties Elizabeth to John
Catherine Cockrell m. Isaac Rice
Sally Cockrell m. Solomon Dumford
Flora Powell Cockrell m. George W. Hainline. There are many desc from this
line which is tied to John and I have some of them in my database but not all
Shelton Cockrell m. Nancy Veal
Celia Cockrell m. Jacob Hainline. There are also many desc on this line but
i only have a few as yet
***Frances Cockrell (my direct ancestress) m. Sampson Veal. I have many
desc.
Jemina Cockrell m. James Veal. I have some of their desc.
The three Veal spouses are brothers and sister.
I DO NOT affirm that this is all correct. There are many inconsistancies in
the various Cockrell lineages. We will probably never get them all straight
until after the resurrection when we will be able to ask them directly. ANY
ADDITIONS, CORRECTIONS OR GENERAL HELP will be APPRECATED!
Earl
Good Day,
Each of you have or will receive a long document that I received from
William O'Connor. Bill is a noted researcher of Breathitt County, Ky.
families. The document has many more Cockrell names and should augment the
1915 document by FN Cockrell. Please look over the document. You are
welcome to add/subtract/correct any part of this document. Please send ALL
changes via the COCKRELL-L list so that all parties can share the wealth.
It is a little early but please have a safe and fruitfull holiday.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Hi Jack,
Your posting about the line of Jacob Cockrell reminded me to tell you that I
found Kay Cockrell Kazmir in Austin, Texas as you suggested. We had lunch
last week, and she is working as controller for a restraunt in Austin. She
would like to get back into Cockrell research and start to publish her news
letter again, but her work prevents her from doing all the work necessary to
put out the newsletter. Her address is 4204-C Duval Road, Austin, Texas
78759-4204 if you want to correspond with her. She remembered the
information you gave her, but did not remember the details of your work.
As you know, the posting you made above is Kay's line.
I am still trying to work my way through all the information you sent me,
which I appreciate very much. I have found a few of the documents you and
your brother mention, but nothing that proves Thomas and Elizabeth Cockrell
were the parents of my John Cockrell, but I am still looking.
Stay in touch,
Tom Green
