THANKS,

I am trying to find a missing grandfather for one of my relatives.
He is Arthur Cockrell. He was the son of Samuel J and Emma C. Cochrell.
Samuel was born abt 1855 so Arthur was probably born about 1875. He was
married to Eva Ethiopia Parkman and had 2 children-a daughter Irene
Cockrell and a son Artemus Cockrell (Sept 1902). About 1908 he simple
disappeared leaving his family behind--possibly to escape problems with the
law and his wife remarried.
I have court records of him dated 1898 showing that he was in Saluda SC at
that point.
In early 1953 (appx) his granddaughter was told by a Thomas Price who would
have been Arthur's nephew that he had meet him in Augusta Ga where he
(Arthur) had been involved in a bar brawl. She and her husband
immediately went to Augusta but were told by the landlord that he left
about 2 weeks earlier.
This man had told T. Price that he was originally from Saluda, SC, that he
had a son there and named him. He tearfully mentioned a sister named Becky
Price--he did not know that he was speaking to her son.
>From his conversation we believe that he had another (probably large
family) somewhere and would very much like to connect.
Rumor had him in Texas (along with all the others who disappeared!) Can
anybody connect?
Mary Tapscott is the daughter of Joseph Cockrell and Nancy Ellis. She is
the sister of Francis Marion Cockrell. Just thought you guys might like
the info.

There has been a change in Grandma, we've noiticed of late.
She's always reading history, jotting down some date.
She's tracing back the family, we'll all have pedigrees,
oh Grandma's got a hobby, she's clinbing the family tree.
Poor Grandpa does the cooking, and now so he states,
That worst of all, he must wash, the cups and dinner plates.
Grandma can't be bothered, she's as busy as a bee.
Compiling genealogy, for the family tree.
She has no time to babyset, the curtains are a fright.
Buttons are off poor Granpa's shirts, the flower beds are a sight.
She's given up her club work, and serials on TV.
The only thing she does nowadays, is climb the family Tree.
She does down to the courthouse, and studies ancient lore.
We know more about our forebears, than ever knew before.
The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze.
A minor irritation, when you are climbing the family tree.
The mail is all for Grandma, and it comes from near and far.
Last week she found the proof she needs, to join the DAR.
A worthwhile avocation, we do all agree.
I's a mounmental project, to climb the family tree.
Some folks came from Scotland, and some from Galway Bay.
Some were French as pastry, some were German all the way.
Some went West to stake their claim, some stayed near the family tree.
Whereever they went she finds them, just for you and me.
wanders throught the graveyard, in search od date and name,
The rich and poor and in between, all sleeping there the same,
he pauses now and then, to be fanned by a gentle breeze,
that blows and blows above the fathers, of all our family trees.
There are pioneers and patriots, mixed in our kith and kin,
Who blazed a path throught wilderness, and fought threw thick and thin,
But none more staunch than Grandma, her eyes light with gleee.
Whenever she finds a missing branch, for the family Tree.
Jack.

<< Hello,
I realize that the book you found was not just yesterday. However it refers
to other information and I would like to find it. I know that this book is
not in my library and since I am in contact with other descendants of the
Alexander Cockrell and Sarah Horton line the title and author are important.
Perhaps a phone call to your local library would reveal this information?
As with any information taken out of context this could be misunderstood
without the information. Some are attorneys and proof is all important.
RESPONSE:
I have not seen this book in any library except in Dallas, Texas. I live in
New Braunfels, Texas near San Antonio, and they do not have a copy of the
Cockrell history, nor does the Houston Library. I do not get to Dallas much,
but will attempt to find the book again when I am next there. As I recall,
this book was a hand typed book that was prepared by a Cockrell family member
of Alexander Cockrell, the owner of Dallas in 1852.
YOU WROTE:
As for Archibald Cockrell I cannot at this time say for certain. It is yet
to be determined if the John Cockrill line has a connection that can be
proven. I am interested in the early life of Simon Cockrell and his maternal
family at this point. Something will produce a clue but what is yet to be
determined.
RESPONSE:
I agree, and have been studying the other Cockrell lines in an attempt to
connect my John Cockrell with the Simon Cockrell you are researching. I have
documented my line back through both Archibald Cockrells, to John Cockrell,
born about 1756, who married Nancy Anne Winstead. I located the settlement
data on Thomas Cockrell, who died in Johnson County, North Carolina in 1799,
that married Tabitha Hatcher, and he had a son named Simon Cockrell, who
married Dicey Garner. I though I had found the connection, and this Thomas
Cockrell was the father of your Simon and my John Cockrell, but the dates and
wives did not match. Upon contacting our host on the Cockrell-List, Tom
Cockerel provided me with the information that Thomas Cockrell, the married
Tabitha Hatcher, was the brother of my John Cockrell, and the parents of both
was Thomas and Elizabeth Cockrell, and his parents were Samuel and Elizabeth
Cockerill, and his father was another Thomas Cockerill born in 1624. I have
not been able to confirm these last 3 generations, but Jack Olson has also
provided the same information, and both Tom and Jack have spent many years
working on the family. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

I have just come across something that interest me beyond words:
My
daughter called me last week to tell me that while she was in
her
dermatologist office he, out of the blue, ask her to let him examine
her
hands! He examined the joint areas--then asked her if she was aware
that
she had either Mediterranean or Indian ancestory, he claimed to be able
to
tell because of the coloring of the skinfolds on her hand. According
to
what we know the answer was--No. When she questioned me I told her
this
and kind'a filed it away in my mind as an interesting piece of
info---you
know, maybe Pocohantas-------yeah, right.
But today I was
reviewing Family Tree Maker FamilyFinder Report and guess
what! There is
an indication with a 3 star rating that two of my
relatives Sarah Bosier
and Benjamin Cockrell are listed on their CD165
African Americans in 1870
(Census) do any of you have this particular
CD165 and would be willing to
check the entries on these two names for
me? I have been able to find very
little on these two names but would be
willing to share what I have, if we
are indeed related.

I went searching for an ancestor, I cannot find him still.
He moved around from place to place and did not leave a Will.
He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences.
He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. census.
He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame.
And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name.
His parents came from Europe. The should be upon some list.
of passengers to the U.S.A., but somehow they got missed.
And no one else in this world is searching for this man.
So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can.
I'm told he's buried in a plot, with a tombstone he was blessed,
but the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest.
He died before the county clerks decided to keep records.
No family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts,
To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans,
Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES.
Fellow Researchers,
I have complied a head of household 1880 Kenucky census based on soundex
C264.
I will only provide the first name of the head of house, his age and
resident county. Should you find someone of interest I can investigate
further for members of the family. The best method for finding more
information of the family is a research of the County Census for the
head-of-household.
My reference document leaves a lot to be desired and in some cases is
unreadable.

Does anyone know the children, or the parents of:
William Cockrell, b. 1716 King George co., Va. d. abt 1755, Fauquier Co., Va.
Married Hannah Anderson, b. 1716 King George Co., Va. d. Fauquier Co., Va.
Thanks for your assistance, Jack
Good Day,
I was looking through some old papers today and came across something that
I thought may be of interest.
From 'The Record' published in Breathitt County, Va.
John Cockrell, son of Simon Cockrell, Sr. and Magadaline Vardiman Cockrell,
was born in Virginia about the year 1700. He married Amelia Alley in
Virginia and moved to Kentucky. He was assessed in Clay County in 1810.
He moved to what is now known as Breathitt County and made his home on a
farm on the south side os the North Fork of the Kentucky River at the War
Shoals. The farm is located 4 miles south of the city of Jackson across
the river from the Obe Roberts farm.
John Cockrell and Milly Alley had four children: John Jr., Elizabeth, Mary
Magadline, and Sarah.
John Cockrell, Jr.may have been married twice. His first wife may have
been ____ Stacy. His second wife was Deborah Fields. John and Deborah
moved to Arkansas in 1839. They had the following children: Dillon, Asa,
Amelia, and Martha and Mary. Martha and Mary were twins.
Amelia Alley Cockrell was a remarkable women. She was about five feet, ten
inches tall, which was unusual in the Cockrell and South Family.
Intellectually, she was one of the brighest women the author had ever met
and would compare favorablu with any women in Kentucky. She was very
religious and was the first member of to join what was then known as the
Campbellite Church in that county. The nearest church was located at Hazel
Green, Kentucky. She made several visits to the church a year often
travelling alone. Amelia lived on the farm until her death between 1850
and 1860 and was buried on the there.
The article was written by the g-g-g-grandchild of John and Amelia
Cockrell. This is not the entire article. I took the liberty to cut those
passages that did not pertain to the Cockrell family.
Hope you find this interesting. If others has information of this type I
am sure someone would find it interesting and may provide just the clue
they need for further research.
