Loudoun County Virginia Chauncery Court Case Index No 1834-107,
Ann Turley v. Adm. of Catherine Cockerill 1834. This Chauncery Court Case names the children of Catherine Cockerill as follows: Ann Turley, Thomas Cockerill, Spence Cockerill, and Jane (Cockrell) Thornton, of "the whole blood." This case also names Catherine's other children: Richard Cockerill, Elizabeth Boyd (husband John Boyd), Eleanor Triplett, Malinda Moffett (husband Benjamin Moffett), and Catherine Ferguson (husband Amos Ferguson) of "the half blood." The court case also indicates that Jane was sometimes in Hampshire County, sometimes in Hardy County.
These Chauncery Court Cases are available online at http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/.
Although I have no first-hand knowledge of the following court case, I believe it is from Hampshire County, Virginia, Chancery Book #2, 16 Sept 1847.
John Sloan executor of Samuel Cockerill, dec'd, Plaintiff against Spencer Cockerill, William S Cockerill, Otho Dowden and Jane his wife, Robert Ayers and Elizabeth his wife, the said William S, Jane, and Elizabeth being children and heirs of Thomas Cockerill, dec'd, John Dailey and Ann Rebecca his wife, Elijah Cunningham and Sarah Catharine his wife, Okey Johnson, Jr and Susan Elizabeth his wife, John A Turley, Charles A Turley, Mary Casey Turley, George W Turley, Patterson D Turley, Hannah V Turley, Francis E Turley, William C Turley, Samuel C Turley, and James O Turley, the said all being children of Charles A Turley, Jane Thornton, and John F Williams, Mortimer D Williams, Mary V L Williams, David M M Williams, William T Williams, Lucy J Williams and Vincent O Williams the said all being children and heirs of Lucy Williams, late wife of Doit Mortimer Williams and daughter of the aforesaid Jane Thornton.
I think that these documents, taken together, show that this Thomas Cockerill was the son of Catherine Cockerill of Loudoun Co., VA and that Thomas was also the father of Jane who married Otho Dowden.
