ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Ralph William Cockerill, 83, Rock Island, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo, Ill.
Burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Cockerill was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Muscatine, the son of James and Margaret Slattery Cockerill. He married Kathleen Ada Lamp on Sept. 11, 1948, in Davenport. She preceded him in death Aug. 11, 1987.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy 1941, where he served as a chief motor machinist. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal, where he retired as a branch chief of Small Arms and Aircraft Weapons Research and Development in 1977.
He enjoyed gardening, bowling and dancing.
Survivors include two daughters, Jan Franks and husband John of Geneseo and Julie Thompson and husband Richard of Centreville, Va.; two sons, John Cockerill and wife Karen of Moline, Ill. and James Cockerill and wife Merry of Gurnee, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Joshua and Jennie Franks, Andrew and Caleb Cockerill and Joseph, Meghan and Kathleen Thompson; and two sisters, Marie Freed of Milan, Ill. and Barbara Wilson of Muscatine.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Donald.
