It has came into my possession- a very old scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings on deaths, marriages and other newsy items. Some loose but most glued to the pages of an old book called Manual of Geography. I can't be 100% sure but I'd say Hannah Ellen McClure Eyre is who made and kept this scrapbook of family History. I can place many names but some must be related to them via her husband's line and some must be just friends or people they knew. One lady, who's obit is in there was born over 200 years ago and all the info in the book, I believe is well over 100 years old and dated before 1904. Also many many handwritten old recipes are in the book. I plan to scan the entire book and share the scans with those who would love to have the information. In some cases, just a few, I could part with the original loose obituary or news clipping. Hannah's mother is Mary Todhunter McClure, a 1st cousin of Abner Jr.. I was so hoping an obit of my great great great gran!
dfather Abner Todhunter Sr (died 1871) would have been in the book. I was not so lucky. Abner Jr. died 1917, out-lived Hannah so he was lucky in that case but I still would love to have his obit. Maybe others have old obits in scrapbooks somewhere and have not shared them? I hope to pass the book to one of Hannah's direct relatives and am not sure how it got to California or out of her family's possession. If you copy any information or request a scan please send a note of thanks to the wonderful woman who did not trash this book of family history but saved a genealogical treasure and passed it to me. I know she'd be tickled to hear from you. She is - Judy Ketner - Birdxing(a)aol.com

OLD SETTLER DIES
S. S. Cockerill passes Away at the Age of Seventy-Nine Years
S. S. Cockerill, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of Wapello county, died last night at his home south of the city, age 79 years. The cause of death was old age and general debility.
S. S. Cockerill was born in Hampshire county, Virginia, in 1818, but soon removed to Ohio, where he was reared on a farm. When 21 years of age he went to work as a teamster from Beaver Creek Mill to Dayton, continuing thus four years. In 1855 he went to Illinois, and the next year came to Iowa, purchasing eighty acres of land in Green township, Wapello county, and this tract comprises a part of the homestead of the deceased, which consist of 200 acres.
In 1843 Mr. Cockerill was united in marriage with Miss Eveline Mason of Ohio, and they became the parents of three children, as follows: William S., now deceased; Mary Ellen, and Henry Milton, of this city. Mrs. Cockerills death occurred in 1848.
Mr. Cockerill was married the seond time in 1853 to Miss Elizabeth Smith, of Ohio, who became the mother of one child, a daughter, Laura, who died in 1881. Mrs. Elizabeth Cockerill died the year of her marriage in 1853.
The third marriage of Mr. Cockerill occurred in July, 1857, when he was united with Mrs. Catherine (Jackson) Wilson. To this union two children were born. Charles Clarence and Florence D.
The deceased was a man who was well liked in the community where he had lived for so many years and his death will be learned of by sincere sorrow by many friends. The funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Zion church.

The Ottumwa, Iowa, "Daily Courier", of July 20th, contains the following account of the sad death by drowning of Howard Cockerill, son of Milt. Cockerill, formerly of this county, cousins of Mr. S. S. Cockerill, the grocer of this city:
Maybe S. S. the grocer his a son of William therefore Milt could be Henry "Milton" and the relationship closer than if S. S. the grocer is indeed the old settler. Which I think is the case since the obit of S. S. doesn't mention that he is or was the grocer of this or any city.

Harry Cockerill's Death
The community was both shocked and grieved by the announcement yesterday, of the death of Harry Cockerill, for although the end had been dreaded for several seeks, his friends could not help hoping that by some means his life would be spared. Harry was a boy who made friends quickly and naturally and many a heart will ache at the thought of his early death. Always pleasant, always agreeable he was a welcome companion to his young friends and a charming acquaintance to his older ones. he was a splendid student in school and during his vacations he could be found at his father's place of business, assisting in many ways. His character was a noble one and his bright manner and industrious habits made all who knew him esteem him highly. About a year ago he was taken with quick consumption, and although all their medical skill could accomplish was done for him, he died yesterday at his father's home in this city. His parents had just broght him home from the south where he !
had been taken in the hope that the mild climate of Texas would do some good, and here, in the city where he was born and raised to manhood, his young soul went out, peacefullly to its maker. All through his long illness he suffered patiently and Quietly even though he knew of the inevitable end. The funeral will be held at the family residence, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. W. G. Wilson, pastor of the First M. E. church.
