UPDATED INFO!
Tom, my first email stated I was looking for Wier Cockerill, the new
info I have found and I believe to be more accurate is that William
COCKERILL is the father of Hallie Bell and Newton COCKERILL.
This is the info I have:
from the 1850 census
John J. COCKERILL (father to William) 41 KY
William 17 m KY
Sarah 14 f KY
Newton 10 m KY
Margaret 7 f KY
Lucy 5 f KY
Next house is
Elizabeth age 69 VA (living alone) could possibly be John's mother?
Info from 1870 census
Wm Cockerill 36
Sarah E. 36 (Wm's wife)
George W. 12
Lucy A 10 (great grandmother to the person who provide me with most of
this info)
Hallie B 5
Casandra 1 (she was rai8sed by the Smith family)
Elizabeth 97 (age should be 79)
(No Newton listed)
Additional info
William and Sarah Neal were married on Sept 4 1853 in Henry Co KY....
both born abt 1835. According to Marie who looked up this info for me at
the courthouse John J COCKERILL signed a consent for William to marry
Sarah.
William remarried on June 24th 1874 to Susan Jones. My long lost cousin
has a copy of the Marriage License to prove this.
William died in 1909 and he and Sarah are both buried in the Point
Pleasant Cem. in Bethlehem, Henry Co KY
Tom, maybe the Newton you found is William's brother as John COCKERILL
had a son William and Newton. If you or anyone else has additional info
on this family I would love to hear from you.
Thank you,

Tom,
I don't have any additional information on Weir, Newton or Hallie Bell
other than what was in my original email. I did however find someone
else who is researching the same two people and I am awaiting a response
from her. Maybe she will provide me with additional information. If she
does I will forward it on to you.
Thank you,
Kathy Watson
Kathy,
I have done some research in Henry County,Ky. but apparently not enough to help
you. At first glance I thought that your Newton Cockerill might be the same
one that I had found in Henry County. A Newton Cockrell was in born in 1840
and died in 1900. He is buried there in the County. My Newton was married
twice once to Nancy Knight and then to Nancy Dowden. The Cockrell family was
very prominent in the County and owned much of what is Eminence, Henry County,
Ky. My records only show this one Newton. I do not mean to offend but can you
tell me a little more about your Newton? Who were the other children in the
family in addition to Hallie Bell and where were they born. I am most
interested in helping you as this family has some mystery to it's origin. If
we can determine the identity of your Wier Cockerill he may be a brother to
Henry C. Cockrell. Henry was born in 1818 and died 1879. Do not be alarmed
with the spellings of Cockrell as it varies from document to document. Any
further information will be most helpful. We also have a John G. Cockrell who
married a Lucy Hudson 28 Nov 1828. He too may be connected.

I am looking for info on my great great grandfather Weir Cockerill. The
only info I have is that he was born in KY and Died in MO. Who he was
married to is unknown but he had two children: Newton COCKERILL was born
Sept. 2 1857 and a daughter (my great grandmother) Hallie Bell COCKERILL
who was born June 15 1864 in Henry KY and died Dec 22 1932 in Elbert
Throckmorton TX. Hallie Bell was married June 19,1886 in Benton Co AR to
William Oliver WATSON.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply. But I can't answer your question!
>From the perspective of the families of the COCKERILL's who emigrated
(voluntarily or otherwise!) to Australia and New Zealand, a lot of
newsgroups seem to have too strong a weighting of USA members. This is
not a moan - it just means that most messages are of families based in
USA, and that there is very little that refers back to UK, and less that
includes AUS and NZ. This of course means that we don't learn very much,
and nor can we contribute much either.
I suppose the only way to begin to overcome this situation is for
Cockerills of AUS and NZ, thin on the ground perhaps, but we should get
into the mode of sending in a query more often. A question a week......
Even if they aren't answered, they may catch the eye of people like
myself who 'call in' - just to check! - and then may stimulate another
query ........... If we don't show ourselves, nobody will know we exist.
Once again, thanks for your response,
Kind regards,
Garth Cockerill,
Napier, New Zealand.
