Hi all,
I found this obit and I think the lady was married to one of my Stuart relatives in NC. Does anyone know her Cockerham relatives? Here it is, Teresa.
Gladys Stuart
Gladys (Lawrence) Stuart, 88, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004.
She was born July 3, 1916, in Surry County, N.C., to Lester and Ollie Woodruff Lawrence.
She is survived by her children, Jay Clyde "Bud" Stuart of Punta Gorda, Fla., Carol S. (the Rev. Sam) Burgess II of Garner, N.C., and Deanna S. "Dee" (Mackie) Cockerham of Lewisville, N.C.; a sister, Lestine (Grady) Mackie of Yadkinville, N.C.; grandchildren, Sam Burgess III, Debbie (Allen) Burcham, Linda (Bill) Cleve II, Jay Stuart, Scott Stuart, Madge (David) Webster, Barbara (Steve) Smith and Stephen (Melanie) Cockerham; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Elkin Valley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Elkin, N.C., followed by a graveside service at the church cemetery at noon, with the Rev. Sam Burgess II officiating.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Baptist Church, 407 Petree Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or Hospice of Forsyth County, 1100 S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Hi Teresa.
Sounds interesting and I am eager to learn more when you find it.
I kind of doubt that Ireland/NY theory though. It`s been a while since I checked the Cockerham DNA results, but if I recall corrrectly men from our line were matching men from VA lines. Your William is first mentioned with the spelling COCKERHAM as I remember. Probably through the years it got changed to Cochran/Cockrum etc, just like we were STEWARD`s, then Stewart an finally by early 1800`s someone decided on STUART, while others kept Stewart. So spelling would not be an issue here.

Good morning Teresa and Harold. I was talking to another cousin Corbet Cochran Jr. in California again a couple of days ago. He is sending updated information concerning the Cockerhams in England and Barbados. I think we are on the verge of having some immigrants surrounded from the other side of the ocean. I'll share whatever I can decipher from his latest collection. He's been collecting this information for perhaps 20 years at this point. No indication of any Cockerham link to Ireland that we've ever seen. The Barbados link is an interesting story. The Island was a British rice plantation during the early to mid 1600s. That's likely the route that the family of Capt. William Cockerham took, among others. Corbet is a descendant of Humphrey Cockerham (Daniel Sr.) through Humphrey's son John William who moved into north central Kentucky from Wilkes Co. NC.

Gail,
I do not know anything about these folks. I am only forwarding to the

someone in their research. Sorry for not being able to give further

Hi List,
I found an interesting website at:
http://juliemorrison.com/surry/pecol.htm
It is about, "...Jesse - slave of William Cockerham, 9 October 1855,
Surry Co, NC, Deed Book 9:483, John E. Stanley from Mary Cockerham..."
