Hello all,
With the current DNA going on I thought it a good time to tell what I have
at long last found out.
Ok seems my line does indeed have connections in AR
Daniel JR. of Halifax son of Daniel Sr.
Daniel Jr. the one who married Martha
They had for one:
Hezikiah Cockrum
who had
William Cockrum
who had
total of 11 kids with Mary "Polly" Spillers
One of these 11 was named
Edward A. Cothrun {sic by the time they hit AL}
Edward A. was seen as E.A. and also as Judge {don't know why?}
Edward A. Cothrun married Miss Mary Ann White on Sept. 25, 1851 in Benton
Co. AL now Calhoun.
By the 1860 they are both gone. Mary's folks are also gone they were there
in 1850 on the Census Benton Co. Jacksonville
I can't find Edward and Mary anywhere that year in 1860 at all!
He stated to members of the Gadsden Times Newspaper that his former home was
near Atlanta. I now think it could have been Stone Mt. Area due to some
very old records that were sent to me years ago.....................I still
have to dig those out again now.
Anyway..................Mary's Parents are in 1860 AR, Ashley Co. Hamburg,
Carter township
Mary nor Edward are with them nor are they nearby that I have
seen.................If you spot them please do let me know.
1870 Again I have J.H. White and Rachael AR, Ashley Co., Hamburg, Carter
township but this year they also have with them:
Willy Cothran 10
Nettie Cothran 6...............still no Mary or Edward to be seen.
1880 again I have John White and Rachael AR, Ashley Co, Hamburg, Carter
township this year they had left their yet unmarried Daughter Elizabeth age
42 she must not have married at all.
Mattee {this next word is the surname and this is how it looks at first
Othrun...............but if you strain your eyes you will see the C in
front of the O} Poor girl they could not make up their minds what to call
her. But this is the same child only now she is 17.
Willy {William} is over a few pages in the home of
Cornelia D. Price a wd. woman with children
Living as a OTHER in the home that year is William COTHRAY age
25...............boy what they could do to our surname back then!
Next.........................................
I found over in Logan Co. AR in the Ellsworth Cemetery a whole bunch of
folks named White and three named Cothran
John H. White was among them and the dates fit, this county was newer and
they must have moved right after it was formed.
I am just begining to get some where with this branch of my line.
Does anyone see anything of interest?
Thanks,
Gail

Of course Chesley is a good possibility. I've never seen the given name Charles (that I recall) in any of the various Cockerham lines until my uncle who wasn't born until 1925! Chesley and Humphrey were paired in records of the probate hearings on Daniel Cockerham Sr. when he died in Halifax Co. VA in 1767. Chesley was probably older than Humphrey as Chesley was on record being sued for debt along with William Cockerham and Daniel Cockerham by Thomas Wild in Caroline County, Virginia in 1751. That would have made him (Chesley) born near 1730. From census records Humphrey was born about 1745. There is an record showing Chesley's first wife Abrusha Norman on a 13 Jan 1757 court record in Carolina Co. His second wife, widow of Shadrach Trible (notice your Wilkes land notes) on his will in 1759. She and Chesley sold land in Caroline Co. 10 Aug 1772. 10 years later is married Peggy Martin in Wilkes and sold 92 acres to Ephraim Davis 17 Sep 1790. He was in South Carolina prior to!
1795.
Chesley and Humphrey must have made the move to Wilkes in or about 1777. Their land claims were several miles apart. Humphrey became a land broker and has several transactions on record, plus he gave or sold land to several of his sons. A widowed mother of Kizziah and Humphrey apparently stayed in Surry Co. North Carolina as per the writings of George Washington Cochran of Surry Co. I have another candidate Marion Reese Cochran of Greensboro whose dna would shed some light on this connection.

Yes, and no. I have seen a reference that the land office which accepted claims was opened in 1777. That's probably the earliest date for any records that weren't taken to Surry County. This is from the New River (Jeff Weaver) website:
Wilkes was formed in 1777 from Surry and the District of Washington. The act was to become effective February 15, 1778. It was named in honor of John Wilkes who was a violent opponent of the Tory party in England. He was not allowed to take his seat in Parliament to which he had been elected. The Americans imagined that he was suffering in the cause of liberty and named this county in his honor. It is in the northwestern section of the State and is bounded by Yadkin, Iredell, Alexander, Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Surry counties.
In 1795 an act was passed naming new commissioners to select a site for the erection of a courthouse, pillory and stocks. It also named commissioners to purchase fifty acres of land on which to lay out a town and to erect public buildings. By 1801 Wilkesborough had been laid out at the courthouse. In 1823 an act was passed authorizing a new courthouse to be erected on the public square in Wilkesboro. Wilkesboro is the county seat.
My only point was that in 1782, records of any kind here would have been very scarce, maybe a marriage record kept in a minister's home? Maybe these records were taken to Surry County? The county seat I believe was Dobson? That's more than 20 or 30 miles from the area where the Wilkes County Cockerhams lived on Buggaboo Creek just east of Traphill, but much closer to the Surry County Cockerhams east of Elkin.
Do you have any clue who this Charles Cockram might have been related to? I've never seen him before!
If the county was formed in 1777 as is generally accepted, yes, there must have been some collection of county business records somewhere. I don't have a clue, aside from a residence or tavern where that might have been. Perhaps John Finley's store? I guess my other meager attempt at a point was that in 1782 the pile would have been pretty small, so finding more data from that time period continues to be a challenge in this neighborhood. You, on the other hand, seem to be doing very well, and I applaud your efforts!

Who are the parents of this Charles Cockram?

I was just reading my Wilkes County, North Carolina Will Abstracts,
Book One (1778-1799) by Absher and published by Wilkes County
Genealogical Society. On page one she writes that on 3 June 1778,
"...commissioners appointed to lay out & appoint a Proper Place in
County of Wilkes to erect the Court House, Prison, Pillor and Stocks
of said County..."
(comment: "I don't know how long it took to build the courhouse or if
one was ever built" Are you fairly certain of the date 1782 as you
note below?")
Also, in Absher's Wilkes County Court Minutes 1778-1788, Volumes one
and two, it looks like court was in session fairly regularly. I noted
that the following Cockerham/derivatives were listed:
8 June 1779-"...ordered Charles COCKRAM... view road from Near Thomas
Johnson's up the Yadkin River into other road near Linvilles old
Meeting House..."
5 December 1780-"...Absolem Cleveland vs. Joseph Hold-Jury: Samuel
Burdine...William COTHERN..."

Remember also that in 1782 there would have been no Wilkes County Courthouse. That was only about a year and a half after the battle of Kings Mountain. Most court records don't really show up until about 1800-1805. They were still appointing attorneys for the county in 1807.

I list below a link that has some early North Carolina marriages.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rectorfamilies/Cochran/Cochran%2...
As you stated below, I found the Chesley COCRUM and Peggie Martin
marriage, Wilkes County, NC, 17 August 1782; Giles Martin, Bondsman.
But, I could not find a Chesley COCKERHAM-Peggy *MCBRIDE* marriage at
that link. I, too, would be interested in knowing your source. Thank
you.

This is great, I sure hope so. I want to know also because I also have a
Martin line................................................
My Grandfather Ovid Dunlap Cothran married Zona Almeda Entriken in Mt. Zion
GA Carroll Co. Oct. 20, 1900
Zona Almeda Entriken was the child of James Amos Entriken and Margaret
Cordilia Martin
Margaret Cordilia Martin was the child of Hicks Martin and Margaret Casey
All of the above are buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Mt.
Zion, GA in Carroll Co. which is on the AL. State Line
Hicks Martin was the Child of Thomas Martin Jr. and Elizabeth ___________
He was first married to Rhoda Washburn..
Thomas Martin Jr. was the son of Thomas Martin Sr. and Sabra Wilkie.
Thomas Martin Sr. R.S. #Sabra W21781
Thomas Martin Sr. was the son of William Martin Sr. of Brunswick Co. VA he
removed to Chatham Co., NC after Martin was born and bought 200 acres on the
Haw River on Nov. 6, 1784 from Wm
Spurlin........................................
Peggy often wondered if my Martin line come into play with
her.............does not look like it much at this point in time.
I also connect into the Massey line that wants to join into the Cockerham
DNA study............................Just found this out!
But a totaly different way, via cousins..................................
I happen to have three cousins (well 2 now we lost one) that are Cothran and
Newton
Their Father was a Cothran and their Mother a Newton
The Newton part connects into the Massey's it seems!
Later,
Gail

You're correct Gail. Go back and read my last message where I listed this family from yours and Peggy's and Frank's research notes.

In case someone is looking for these two, it's not much but here you go.
This is posted on the Appling Co. Website of Rootsweb under Cemeteries but
is for:
Bacon Co., GA
Stewart Cemetery
Uncle Jeff Cothern
Aunt Priss Priscilla Cothern
No dates for either but they are there and they are marked!
Gail Moore embracer(a)pineland.net
Daniel Cockerham Jr. d. 1772 and Martha -- (later Pigg) were parents of the following:
Hezekiah Cockerham b. 19 Feb 1762 probably Halifax or Caroline VA d. 1846 near Greeneville, SC who married Elizabeth -- (d. 11 Aug 1825)
Daniel Cockerham b. ca 1764 d. ca 1806 m. Juda Cooley
James Cockerham b. 1766 d. >1850 (spouse if any unknown?)
Sary Cockerham b. <1771
William Cockerham b. 1771 d. >1850 COULD THIS BE MATCH FOR EARLIER WILLIAM FROM OUR DNA PROJECT?
I STILL SUSPECT THE WILLIAM COCKERHAM WHO WAS THE ANCESTOR OF TAMMY IS LIKELY A SON OF HUMPHREY COCKERHAM OF WILKES CO. NC. HUMPHREY WAS CHESLEY'S BROTHER.
I'll attempt to post some families to put some dates on some of the common names. For now this is Chesley Cockerham showing his son Daniel. Daniel son of Chesley born between 1790 and 1800.
From my Cockerham2a file:
1. Chesley Cockerham (Cocrum) b. ca 1730 d. < 1810 He was listed on a
1795 tax list in Greenville, South Carolina. Frank E.
Cockerham of Melbourne, Florida found Chesley on
Caroline County court records being sued for debt along
with William and Daniel Cockerham by Thomas Wild in
1751.
m. (1) Abrusha Norman... She is identified on a 13 Jan 1757 court
record in Caroline County giving security for the orphans of
Joseph Norment.
m. (2) Elizabeth Coleman? Trible, widow of Shadrach Trible. She is
identified on 1759 will of her first husband. She and Chesley
sold land in Caroline County on 10 Aug 1772.
m. (3) Margaret "Peggy" Martin 17 Aug 1782 in Wilkes County, NC.
She was the daughter of Alexander Martin. Giles Martin was
security. Peggy moved with Chesley to Pendleton District,
South Carolina. Chesley sold 92 acres to Ephraim Davis in
Wilkes County on 17 Sep 1790.
1. Daniel Cockerham , shown on 1800 census in SC less than 10 years of age. (as per Peggy Chapman)
This man Chesley has intrigued me for some time. Chesley is found in court records as early as 1751 in Caroline County, Virginia. He apparently left that area to escape some debts. On 11 May 1751 Thomas Wild filed actions of debt against William Cockerham, Daniel Cockerham and Chisley (sic) Cockerham. He was with Humphrey at the time of the deaths of Dan Sr. and Dan Jr. in Halifax County, Virginia in 1767 and 1772. They then both came to Wilkes County, North Carolina where Chesley had several land grants and land dealings recorded between 1782 and 1790. He and Peggy moved on to South Carolina after 1790. Peggy Chapman reports that Chesley witnessed a deed for Tucker Woodson in Greenville, SC in 1795.
Again, study the Cockerham1 file.

That's not the guy most of us refer to as Daniel Sr. Check my Cockerham1 file. I believe the Hezekiah referred to here is the son of Chesley and thus the grandson of Daniel Sr. d. 1767. (Daniel Jr. d. 1772 was the son of Daniel Sr. and Chesley's brother) Chesley moved to South Carolina with his third wife Peggy McBride and had a son Daniel also. Daniel's Jr's wife married Samuel Pigg and moved to the same area of South Carolina. Confused yet? Look at my Cockerham1 file.

Subject: [COCKERHAM] william winn/1800 census Greenville SC/James son of Dan
Sr?
This information comes from the research that Frank Cockerham and Peggy
Brown Chapman did. It is documented in GCJ Vol 12 NOs. 1 & 2 Winter and
Spring 2001, I think page 14, top of page.
It references the 1800 census in Greenville, South Carolina on the bottom of
page 13.
#96 William Cockrum
#185 William Cochram
#945 Daniel Cockrum
#946 Chesley Cockrum
#1447 Hezekiah Cockrum
#1455 James Cockrum
"William Cockrum #96 was very likely a young son of William Winn Cockerham
of Virginia. He married Mary P. Verner, daughter of John and Jane Edmonson
Verner on 12 December 1805, probably in Pendleton District SC. Also in the
1800 Greenville census, was Esley Hunt #87 who married (2) Anna, daughter of
William Winn Cockerham. Esley Hunt sold William Cockerham Jr. 145 acres in
Pendleton District on 4 August 1808; witnessed by William W. Cockerham and
Matthew Hooper. By 1810, the Pendleton census listed both a William
Cockerham and a William W. Cockran. No close family relationship existed
between William Cockrum #96 and the other names listed above."
"The preponderance of evidence shows William #185 (I add, who married Mary
Henderson), Daniel and James were brothers of Hezekiah. Links between the
four men were numerous, and their ages showed they were contemporaries , of
the same generation."
Can anyone add to this?
I have never seen that Daniel Sr had a son named James, does anyone know
anything about that?
Does this help to show a relationship, between the William Winn Cockerham
line --the Daniel line or the John Sr line?
