Hi Teresa,
I was so interesting in your posting.
I have been told all my life that our name was Cochran, then through the
years the name
kept changing.I know that some of my dad's brothers spelled it Cothran. My
dad spelled our's Cothern. My grandfather was supposed to have been born in
NC. His name was Joseph Cothran. His parents was Cochran born in SC. Joseph
Cothran born 1848 in NC
and died in 1918. {I think in Ky} But I cannot get a lead on my family.I
know Joseph had a son in a previous marriage named A.J.Cothran.Have you
heard any of these names?
I thought of I could find a Cochran with a son named Joseph.F maybe I could
get a lead back to my family. Just curious about your posting. I am at a
brick wall I can't get past.
Any help appreciated Josie

Hi Tresa,
I'm sorry to have taken soo long to reply to your e-mail but I've been very
busy lately. Here is what I'm looking for in the Cochran/Cochram line. My
Martin Leverett was born about 1810 somewhere around Henderson Co., N.C..
He married Elizabeth Cochran or Cochram around 1830 because their first
child Francis was born in 1832 in N.C. just before they moved to Hamilton Co
, TN. They had several more children in that county of TN before moving on
to So. IL in 1846. Also while in TN there was the Abner Cochram family that
lived a couple of doors down from them. In the 1840 TN census Abner was
over age 60 but under 70 as was his wife. In Il (1850)there was a Johnathan
living close to them. He was 23 and born in TN. I think there are one or
two more Cochran/Cochram's who seemed to follow them from N.C. to IL but I
can't find that data right now. My Elizabeth died in 1872 according to one
of her son's but I can't find her after 1865 when her husband died. Well
that's my Cochran connection that I'm trying to put together. Don't know if
any of this helps you connect anything or not. I hope so. Thank you for
asking and please let me know if you find anything.
Doug and Kathy Malone in IL.

these people would really appreciate it.

Hi Teresa,
Weird that I never picked up this census list after all the years. Anyway, yes she would have been born in Surry CO NC ca. 1785. Nathaniel Stuart did not got to Greenville SC until after 1795.

Interesting!

Harold,
Thats the wrong Oscar. The one you mentioned is my grandfather. Only he wasn't from MS, he was born in Anderson Co. TX. He was the son of John David Cockerham, grandson of Henry J. Cockerham.
Butch
Don,
Searching the Cockerham message board for your Jeff F. Cockerham and his son
Oscar Carlise and Oscar Carlise Jr, did not find any hits on Jeff F. but did
have a few on an Oscar (Isaac Lee Oscar Cockerham of MS.)
Since most of us are still looking for Cockerham ancestors and logging in
most of the Cockerham surnames that we find, it might be a good idea to
address your brick wall on Jeff F. Cockerham b. 1846 (1900 census says
Ga.:1880 census says NC.) on this message board.
We all have a different method and sources to look into, maybe we can get a
clue from the others.
On the premise that Jeff F. was single and living at home with parents, I
did not find Jeff Cockerham or any variation of the name in Georgia in 1870,
but I am still looking in the 1870 NC census.
(Jeff married in 1876 to Nancy as indicated in the 1900 Red River Gap, TX
census).
Harold
To some it may seem that the Cockerham Surname DNA Project is going great
guns. But to me it looks pathetic! Not one known male Cockerham descendent of
Daniel Cockerham has joined the project! There are several groups of
Cockerhams that need data from the Daniel Cockerham line in order to compare their
own data. They are being robbed of the opportunity to determine their
heritage.
Butch and I have put in a lot of time and effort on this project, especially
since Genetics is a foreign language to both of us, and now it's time for
some others to contribute a little bit.
Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations!

I suspect you need the file, but that's your call. This should help?:
JOSEPH COCKERHAM
OF KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, VIRGINIA
In June of 2004, with the assistance of information collected and assembled by Frank Edward Cockerham and a few other researchers, I now believe Joseph Cockerham was the great x 8 grandfather of Brian Todd Cockerham b. 13 Dec 1982 in Nashville, Tennessee. Since Im Brians Dad, that makes Joseph my ancestor too. Herewith I will attempt to show what is currently known and/or believed about Joseph and his family.
Most probably Joseph Cockerham was an immigrant, likely from Devonshire, England, but this is pure speculation on my part. There are no known records tied to this man prior to his marriage in 1671.
Joseph Cockerham b.ca 1650 location currently unknown. Birth date is speculation based on minimum age of majority for his known records.
According to records referenced by Frank E. Cockerham, Joseph petitioned the court 22 Sep 1671 regarding a deed of trust made by his wife Ann Philladay Garraway before they were married. On 26 Sep 1674 he sued in New Kent County concerning a deed made to Amph Garraway. Frank references deed of Joseph Cockeram and Mary his wife to Robert Bird, all of St. Stephens Parish (King and Queen County)dated 9 May 1679, for 600 acres lying on Robins Branch and Main Swamp of Dragon. Frank reports a petition was filed asking a popularly elected Vestry in St. Stephens Parish in 1683 which was signed by Joseph Cockerham. Joseph was mentioned in the will of William Bird 17 Jul 1694 and in a court committee report concerning claims to Pamunkey lands. Joseph was mentioned in the will of William Clayborne in King William County 10 Jan 1705. He received a land grant for 800 acres 24 Apr 1703 and a patent on same 23 Oct 1703 . In 1704 he sold 600ac in King William County, Virginia to Rob!
ert Byrd and 200ac to son William Cockerham. Both Joseph and William are on quit rent lists for King William County in 1704, Joseph with 600 acres and William with 200 acres. Joseph, according to Frank, witnessed a deed 12 Aug 1698 for Richard Whitehead which showed that Joseph was then located on his Mattaponi River/Herring Creek tract of land in the Pamunkey Neck. Frank in 2004 assembled an assortment of maps of tracts including this one that I was able to locate on Mapquest and Topozone.com LDC.
Frank E. Cockerham wrote the following: Having received his patent for 800 acres on 23 Oct 1703, Joseph Cockerham was accordingly listed in the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls of 1704. The list was published in Reference 12, where Joseph Cockeram was taxed for 600 acres and William Cockram was taxed for 200 acres. It is clear that Joseph had transferred 200 of his 800 acres to William. No specific family relationship can be identified, but it is generally conceded that William was most likely the son of Joseph. Joseph had been married to Ann Philladay Garraway in the early 1670s, and to Mary (unknown) by 1679, so either may have been mother of William. We assume William was 21 years or more in 1703.
Joseph Cockerham 1650 - ca 1737
m. () Ann Philladay 22 Sep 1671 King William Co., VA She was the widow
of John Garraway of King William County, VA From the Minutes of the Council and General Court of Colonial Virginia 1670-1676 under the date Sep 22, 1671 the following was extracted: Cockerham vs Lyddall,
Capt. George Lyddall being summoned to this Court by Joseph Cockerham who marryed with Ann Philladay Garraway about the intents of a Deed wherein the said Ann Philladay had made over in trust for the use of herselfe and children before he intermarriage with the said Cockerham to the said Lyddall certain goods, and the said Lyddall in Court delivering in writing under his hands that the said estate so made over by the said deed was for no other use intent or purpose but for the use of her and her said children. It is therefore ordered that the Deed be continued and remain to the use aforesaid.
m. (2) Mary King William Co. Virginia (shown on court record 1679)
1. William Cockerham b. ca 1682 [He could have been the son of either
Ann or Mary above.] If he had siblings, they havent been identified
or properly placed as yet.. From Frank Cockerhams notes, Joseph
Cockerham above listed 16 transportees including Christopher
and John Smith, both according to Frank, likely sons of Ambrose Smith. On 30 Apr 1717 Christopher Smith and William Cockerham received a grant of land in Reedy Swamp in King William County. William Cockerham had a patent for 350 acres on the north side of Reedy Swamp 24 Mar 1725 St. Johns Parrish, King William County adjacent to lands of Robert Baber.
On 22 Jan 1718 Robert Baber received a patent for 300 acres. Frank says this man was the father of Robert Baber Jr. and Robert Baber Jr. The earliest known record which may refer to Daniel Cockerham Sr. consists of a deed in St. Margaret's parish in King William County, Virginia dated January 1722 when one Robert Baber transferred property to Edward Baber, the land bounding on Daniel and William Cockerham. There is considerable reason to believe this William Cockerham was Daniel's father. There was a land grant recorded in Caroline County, Virginia in 1717 to Christopher Smith and William Cockerham. Frank reports that 20 Feb 1723 patent 11-3330 To Edward and William Yarborough, described as being on Robert Baber and William Cockerhams back line. On 24 Mar 1725 a patent 12-360 was issued to William Cockerham, described as binding on 300 acres belonging to said Cockerham and Robert Baber Jr. and on the back of another piece belonging to said Cockerham lying between th!
e north fork and south fork of the Reedy Swamp. Patent 12-361.

Two many of these guys had the same first names as for instance John. The guy I refer to as John Cockerham Sr. deeded land to his son Phillip in Lunenburg Co. in 1758 along with three cows to the children of Minor Cockerham... I don't show a son David for him in particular, but that doesn't mean he didn't have a son David? I'm not familiar with your David Dent, so I'm not much help there either. I don't have a good answer for your question as evidenced by my lack of knowledge of the early Cockerhams. I've been looking for that trail since 1965 and have only found tiny pieces of evidence. My own line has only been pushed back from Daniel Cockerham who died in Lunenburg in 1767 only through the work of cousin Frank Edward Cockerham who found enough land information in King William County to make a link to yet another William and to apparently his father Joseph in the vicinity of Reedy Creek. That takes my Cockerham line at best back to Joseph who married the second time in 16!
71. In my files I have around 4,000 of my Son's direct ancestors with many of the lines going back into the 1500s with good paper trails. The Cockerham's as you know aren't so easy. I haven't been able to tie any of these families together for certain. You may not have my Cockerham1 file for what it's worth. I'll send it via direct e-mail for your use. There's some speculation in there and references to some records but not a very big pile.

I cannot link back to the VA Cockerhams as yet. If what the DNA results
indicate is true, I am decended from John Cockerham SR through his son
David. As I said, the paper trail broke down at Henry J. Cockerham.
The DNA results on some of the participants are 24/25 that I match with
those of participants from Thomas Cockerham, David Bent's brother. This is
one of the reasons I am participating in the project.
I am a firm believer that there needs to be a paper trail, but where none
exits what do you do?
Butch

AOL bounces emails that include any URLs they don't like, which includes all
geocities, tripod and now apparently ysearch URLs. There's nothing we can
do to prevent this, but AOL subscribers might want to keep an eye on the
archives from time to time to see what, if anything, they're missing.
My admin file says that recently, the listed below addresses, are not
receiving emails from this list. I am trying to send this to them through
cc.
